Want To Buy .22-.250 Bolt Action

Morning all -

My cousin asked me last night to scour the internet to see what was available in terms of a .22-.250 bolt action rifle for ranch work. I've dug through the internet, but there's generally a wide collection of plastic guns by Savage and Mossberg floating around. Outside of a Midland 2100 (no idea on the quality -- the internet claims good and bad, depending on to which source/forum you take as gospel), there's not much available at $600 or less.

Looking for a rifle with iron sights (absolute requirement), and a wooden stock, ideally with optics -- at least mounts.

Does anyone have a rifle with which they might be willing to part?

For a new manufacture at that price point, I'd look at the Howa 1500 Walnut Hunter. However, if it were me, I'd budget another few hundred; and look for a more classic and collectible rifle such as Winchester Model 70, Remington 700, Ruger M77, Browning A-bolt I or II, or Weatherby Vanguard.

I missed the part about iron sights. Not much use on a 22-250 if you ask me (except as backups, of course).

Let's say "prefer wood stock".

Iron sights are backups... like I said, working rifle. The coyote trying to take down a calf doesn't care if the scope just happened to be damaged when you hit a pothole.

Actually, that's not a bad idea... there might even be a used model in .22-.250 running around somewhere...

@cash_tx - I’d 2nd on an Browning ABolt or XBolt rifle …But not gonna get “New” for $600 and unlikely to even get a good used one for that price

I don't have anything to sell you, but I think the Savage 99 was made in 22-250 in the modern era after 1970. They were famous for the 250 savage so they were able to get the feed correct for a 22-250 by simply changing the barrel.

They are wonderful ranch guns with a beautiful feed system. Quite collectible. The later versions were drilled and tapped for scope mounts. They have iron sights. They are a lever gun, but they have the precision of a rotary internal magazine and don't suffer the same issues as a "wild west" type gun.

Bud's Guns, no iron sights, but has a threaded barrel to run a suppressor. Could have a local GS add iron sights.

I picked up a Savage 510F Striker pistol in .22-250 a few years back within that price point. Pretty cool gun!
