Want a new scope

To be honest, if you want to shoot those long shots you need good optics! i would opt of something in the minimum 18X zoom with a parallax adjustment. Then the crosshair is important, look for something that has a fine crosshair with multiple aiming points.

Leupold 4.5-14 or 6-18, You're looking for higher magnification and you already have and like Leupolds, No brainer!

VX3 4.5-14X40 in 30mm tube with side focus , great value for money , my .270 ;6.5x55 and 338 all have them .

Good call, I forgot about the 30mm tube. For long range you need adjustment range and the 30mm tubes generally offer much more than 1" scopes (a sloped base is another option). Side focus is way more convenient than the on the bell models. Also check out the optics at full mag, some get fuzzy at 18X and up.

BTW repeatable and reliable mechanicals are far more important than ultra clear optics. If your settings don't track perfectly, return to zero and hold up to recoil and knocks the best glass in the world isn't worth a damn. Don't skimp on rings and bases, quality steel rings and bases are the foundation for accuracy forgotten by many.

I am taking a very close look at the Leupold VX 3 4.5-14x40 in 30mm tube, trying to research the different reticle types, mine all have the simple duplex reticle. I will be sticking with Ruger rings, as they have always worked well for me. One of my biggest challenges is not spending my optics money on another gun!

I was recently suggested to buy this ATN X-Sight HD 5-18X:

It seems to be really great! So I think I should take it.

Night vision that cheap probably doesn't work all that well, i have no experience with this product, but it seems to have a lot of moving parts, also if you are new to hunting i think you should probably keep it simple this sight has a lot of moving parts. The rest of this thread contains good advice as to scope choices.

it weights over 2 lbs for the small version, thats enough to make me not want it right there

You might want to check out the Vortex Viper line. Real quality scopes with a Leupold warranty at very reasonable prices
Agreed... we sell a lot of these VORTEX scopes in the shop and real good value for money.. BRIGHTEST optics I have seen.

Buy the best optics you can especially if you tend to shoot at longer ranges; 500+ meters. I suggest finding the extra $$ and buying a top end scope such as Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss or Steiner.

As I just posted in another thread, I sold a "redundant" rifle and used the $$ to upgrade my scope.

Also consider a lighter "tactical" scope from Burris or Bushnell. They have really improved the quality of their optics. Especially Burris since it was bought by Beretta.

Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate that. But this ATN one I talked about is not under 500$, so not so cheap and I think it's not bad, though you must be right not for a beginner like me.

@Grayson32 i would expect to spend at least that on a regular scope and since most quality night vision scopes are easy 1000+ Id say something isn't right for you I would look at a leupold vxIII good scopes at a good price.

My 2¢... Take a look at the Burris Veracity; MSRP about $1,100.00 but can be found on Amazon for about $750.00...
  • 5-25x50mm
  • 30mm main tube
  • Side focus and parallax adjustment
  • True zero click stop adjustment knobs

Steiner is Burris

I think Leupold is hard to beat in terms of quality, value, warranty, etc. Vortex has came on strong becoming big competition for them. Same warranty basically.

Steiner is Burris

Both Steiner and Burris are owned by Beretta, but saying they are the same is inaccurate. Even though they are both owned by Beretta and the USA address is the same, they operate as separate entities. Burris Co. on paper owns Steiner and is the North American distributor for Steiner. However, Steiner develops and markets the Steiner product.

In 2011 Steiner introduced the Predator scope line made with German glass in the Greeley plant and it has now been replaced by the GS3 line of hunting scopes. Nighthunter scopes and all tactical scopes are made entirely in Germany at the Steiner facility.

The glass is Steiner mechanicals Burris, I have a Steiner Predator and it is really a Burris with Steiner glass right down to the ballistic plex

And I have a NightHunter scope and it's quite different than any of the Burris scopes; see previous comments...

I do believe the lines are being merged soon there will be no difference

I am switching gears for now, I am going to put some new glass on my Vanguard in 30'06, I am having a lot of fun shooting it, and I will be passing it to my son, and I will pick up another '06. I am probably going to stick with Leupold for persona reasons, and I know they make a quality scope. i really appreciate the inputs, I will be looking at buying the new scope for the 300 next summer.
