The trophies should be state side soon and I was wondering about mounting. Some of these guys are significantly larger and I assume heavier than the whitetails I have on the wall. How do you guys mount them? Wall anchor? Lag bolt to a stud?
Thank for your help

anything over the size of say an impala should probably be at least a 3" woodscrew into a stud and larger depending on size. Sheet rock anchors are not very reliable in my experience.

I used lag bolts into studs for kudu and waterbuck.

I talked to my taxidermist and all he uses are deck screws placed into a stud at a angle. This is for the majority of plains game animals. So that is what I am using.

I use these driven in to the studs. Longer ones for the heavy stuff, short ones for lightweights. Home Depot and Lowe's sell them in different sizes, finishes and lengths.

One thing I just learned is that there are several very good hangers specific for wall pedestal mounts. McKenzie tax. Supply among others carries them. Also if you can hit a wall stud, remember that some screws have very poor shear strength at the head and a large nail is often a better choice-thats why they use nails to put the sheeting on your house, not screws

1/4 inch lag for lighter stuff. 3/8 lag for heavies, both long enough to go at least 1 inch into a stud. No drywall anchors for anything. They are advertised to hold up to 50 lbs plus but the drywall won't hold that much.

Screw in the stud will do the trick! Even the buff is just a 3 1/2 inch screw!

Yes, lag into stud with either 1/4 or 3/8 depending on size/weight... as has been posted. The head of the lag should be flat/standard type, not a tapered, countersink type screw or bolt.

Yep good strong lag bolt definitely into a stud at least one inch. I’m using the OOK drywall anchors on just about everything up to zebra. Easy system to use. Home Depot sells them as does amazon. Then again pedestal mounts really solve that problem! ;) Pictured are some of my trophies I used lag bolts into a stud.

Just a little more help...you should first drill a pilot hole the size of the minor diameter (or a bit smaller) of the lag screw so it doesn’t split the stud if you are close to the edge of it.

Excellent mounts you have, really like the idea of a pic and plaque beside.

Thanks

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
Ready for the hunt with HTK Safaris

Hello:
I’ll take the .375 Whitworth for $1,150 if the deal falls through.
Thanks .
