Did Jeffery put Model 70 style safeties on their 1930s rifles? I thought I read where Jeffery and others were forced in the 20s and 30s to fall back onto building their big bores on standard actions?

Delighted to see the 404 making a comeback. It is perhaps the most accessible of the "obsolete" African cartridges.

John Olin invented the side safety around 1936 and they didn't catch on for custom mausers until quite a bit later. Jefferys built for iron sights back then, and even today have flag safeties. Their double square bridge models compatible with optics will have three position side safeties as all bespoke mausers built for optics do.

It's pretty hard to upgrade the near perfection of the German Mauser action or the British Sporting Rifle built upon it, but as an American our small claim to fame is two improvements from John Olin that are now ubiquitous in best guns. (side safety and gas port)

But no, early to mid-20th century best grade, large bore safari rifles did not have side safeties and they did not contemplate use of modern optics.

What exchange rate are you using? This morning's rate is £1/$1.29 US. Thus the 500J model goes for only $67K and 400J can be had for just $62K. That's roughly six buffalo.

Somehow I don't think these bespoke investments would turn around very quickly. But maybe in my grandson's time.

The rifle in the in the photo has a Mod. 70 style safety because the client requested this style of safety. We can and do supply the traditional flag type safety for rifles without a scope. The rifles built on standard actions in the 20's and 30's were just a cheaper offer at the time for clients such as Game Depts I believe.

Pretty guns, I would love a 500J! But the price is well beyond what I could ever pay for a rifle.

No problem if you`re rich. For many of us (myself included) that money is better spent on an ele hunt.

Several months ago I sold a genuine .404J. It went to a fine dealer in RSA the price was very reasonable. After the rifle was sold, but before the export permit was issued. Then this happened.

All firearm permits were frozen until new permit prices could be determined. Result the new export permit will result in me getting a few hundred dollars for a pristine Mauser (98) Jefferies .404, that was the handiest rifle I have ever hunted DG.

I am surprised no member has heard about our firearm license fiasco. Its going to be very expensive for a outfitter to own xtra firearms , such as loaners/rentals. Ah, then there anti-poaching .303 enfields. I heard that one conservancy’s license cost will be $28,000.00
