Vihtavouri Powders

N5xx, expensive, impressive flames out of the muzzel. Exellent for max loads.

For 308win and 375hh n140 and n150 are exellent choices.

Given the VV choices and calibers, my thinking would probably be N150 or 550 for 308 and 375. I'd lean toward N140 or 540 for the 404. While N140 or 540 may yield the top accuracy in the 308... I'm still thinking high temp/high pressure and hunting applications so would lean toward slightly slower powder like N150 or 550 for both the 308 and 375 especially in the heavier bullet weights. Just 2 cents worth

I often use N550 in my .30-06 but it's best application as an all-round propellant appears to be the 7x57. I would imagine that N140 (and possibly N540) would be better suited to the .308 Win. and the .375 H&H but each to their own.

What do people think of varget with 404 Jeff - 400 grain peregrine solids and 400 grain woodleigh hydros?

I'm using RL 17 currently but with the woodleigh hydro - which is a tenth of an inch longer apparently - the seating depth might cause me case capacity limitations in my Norma cases

I have 3.5 Lb of varget sitting around doing nothing so thought I'd work up some loads with it

Thoughts anyone?

I use AR2209 (H4350) in my 375H&H but when using the Hydros use AR2208 (Varget) or AR2206H. Luckily all powders throw the Hydro to the same point of impact as the soft nose in my Rem700.

I have tried VV 133,135,540 in my 458 Lott. They all worked with 133 and 135 giving me slightly better velocity.Peregrine bullets suggested VV530 as best for the Lott with their 515 gr bullets but I need to get some powder first before giving that a try.
The guy I reload with uses 530 for his 308 and has also loaded VV 550 with 550 gr Woodleigh solids successfully. So for your 404, I would look to the VV 500's.

My Lott with 515 gr mono copper bullets is a bit pushed for space and apparently copper bullets like faster powders. Your 404 with plenty of case space and conventional bullets might like a slower powder like the 550.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
