Victoria Falls After-Hunt Tour

Many of you have experienced Victoria Falls and all it has to offer. My wife and I will be going there in May after a 10-day Cape Buffalo hunt. Your input as to what to do and see at Victoria Fall in the 3-4 days we've allotted before we return home would be priceless. Thank you for any tips or direction you might suggest.
After my hunt I booked 2 nites at the Victoria Falls Hotel to relax and unwind. Breakfasts, lunches and Dinners out back on the huge terrace were wonderful. Great historic hunters bar also
Woke up both mornings at sunrise, had coffee on the terrace, and took the footpath direct to the Falls...alone...not a soul in site.
One of the pure delights of a 3 week adventure.
Best

Thanks Spike! That's where we are staying! Cheers! Herb
Pleasure Herb.
Be sure to tip a few at the inside bar and peruse the photos. The mental image of all the old Pros who have done the same through the decades is breathtaking.
God Speed and Hunters Luck

how long a walk to the falls please?

Me snd my wife and another couple spent a few days there in September last year and really enjoyed it. We did a guided tour of the falls on the Zim side, which was great. The wives did high tea at the Vic Falls hotel and they had a good time with that. Me and my buddy did a morning of fishing on the river and caught a few fish and had fun. We did a private sunset dinner cruise on the river and that was probably the highlight of our time there. We also spent an afternoon shopping/haggling in a market for souvenirs and brought back some nice stuff. When I go back I will do a helicopter tour of the falls. Of course there is some activities for the more adventurous sorts like bungee jumping and whitewater rafting if that’s more your speed.
Where did you go on the craft shopping please? I am thinking of asking the Vic Falls Hotel concearge to book me a tour person to both take me through the craft shops and negotiate prices in US cash which is what I will have. Greatly appreciate your thoughts on this please

Been a few years since my last time in Vic falls, can only imagine its grown. Lots of great tourist things to do at the falls. All already mentioned, but also the croc farm tour, then have a 12 oz croc steak and wine for the meal. An added bonus. Can also do the lion, cat "zoo" tour if they are still available. Carver village was good but stopping along the roadside for more authentic carvings was better.

I always add tourist days to the beginning of any safari. For many reasons, time to acclimatize a little, regulate time change and sleep pattern and more importantly allow baggage and guns to "find" you if lost before it becomes any issue on the hunt part.

Have a great time, and write us a hunt report please.

Where do you recommend getting the most authentic carvings please?

I certainly hope the same concierge/door man/tour guide gentleman is still at the Vic Falls Hotel. He was an impressive gentleman, he gave us the grand tour. Pictures with him and the Queen and Opera Winfrey among other celebs. Proudest person about his job I have ever seen.

The whole of Vic Falls is an awesome place. Much history, my first stay there was during a certain Presidents eradication attempt towards a group of his countrymen. An army of AK carrying men kept us all well back, while bulldozers pushed over, piled and burned whole neighborhoods of houses while tenants stood by. Not a good memory. Glad it is sorted out now.

There is this open air type of market area where folks just have little areas set up under big tents. It all negotiable as far as prices go and everybody takes US cash. Not exactly sure the name of the spot but it’s right in the middle of town. Not too far from some of the restaurants. I’m sure your hotel staff would know where it was at. We spent a few hours there after lunch one day and bought gifts for the kids back home. My wife got some nice jewelry and I got a nice buff carving, all for a good prices. I’ll see if I can find the name of the area and I’ll post up if I do.

It's nice to see this post helping others as well. We are so fortunate to have this wealth of information to benefit AfricaHunting.com members. THIS is a wonderful web site! Thankfully Yours, Herb Johnson

As others stated, there was a huge market, venders were all local selling what THEY had carved. At falls gate and in front of airport there were roadside stalls BUT looked like they were carved somewhere else and people were sellers. PH and I drove from Vic Falls to SA border, there were many roadside stalls that we stopped to look at what they had.

But my best most authentic carvings were gifts to me from camp staff, started on my first few days and presented to me on last night during tip meeting. Those I cherish the most. This also happened in Namibia, but were carved from nuts. Look like large chestnuts.

I was looking thru picks of that safari the other day and saw pics of the gentleman in question, explaining with added jester at the pics in hotel hallways. Memories of none hunting things while on safari that make safaris great in my eyes.

BTW my first ever PH on my first safari, (in Zim) he was the first black man to get his Zimbabwe PH licence, he was also picked by the Queen to be his personal guide while she was there. (Before my safari). He was my first ever PH so I held him in a high regard, now after many more ph's I realize how great he really was. No question about Zim, animals, trees, birds, insects, reptiles went unanswered. A true Zim PH. We got along like BF's.

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
