USA: Has Anyone Hunted With Ox Ranch?

After doing some brief looking about, freakin kangaroos are expensive but 7k is way to high. I'm thinking I could do one for a touch over half that.
hahaaa why do my favourite critters have to be the expensive ones :ROFLMAO:

Believe me I'm in the same boat. I actually have a red kangaroo full hide. I plan on mounting it for a shop display in my Taxidermy shop. I haven't had time to mess with it but will one day.

Halloween is just around the corner, wear it trick or treating. All your old cop buddies would be floored when they found out the drunk kangaroo was really @gizmo in costume! LMFAO

 Sounds like a good deal!

@gizmo I am actually surprised that there are other ranches that offer roos! I would not have expected that considering they are australia animals. How common are they?

Not very hence the reason they are so dang pricey. I'm still pricing them and need to make a few more phone calls but I'm thinking I could get it done right at 4K all in. When I find what I'm looking for I'll holler. When are you wanting to do this?

Anyone have any idea what is the best calliber for a roo, and the best shot placement position on them?

223 or 22/250. I've shot hundreds for professional shooters I used to go out with.
I was the mouth piece for the Association if Professional Shooters years ago.
222 is minimum though with a 50 grain bullet. In the 223/22/250 category I suggest a 55 grain bullet. Head shots at a couple of hundred yards/meters is not as easy as you might think.

Roos are easy to kill as they stand up and expose their heart regions. Stalking Roos by day is not always easy and they appear to have good eye sight, hearing, and sense of smell.

Thanks @Dr Ray that is very useful :-)
Agree I definitely think chest shot would be easier for these guys. Presumably you can shoot anywhere on the chest area between the arms for a heart/lung kill?

Do you know what the situation is in Australia regarding recreational roo hunting? It seems there is a lot of uncertainty out there on this.

I used to get non commercial tags in Queensland one of the two major roo states.
To give you an idea of the size of Queensland it's 2.5 times the size of Texas.
Roos are nocturnal critters but someone I know ran into one last week on a very busy road into Cairns. Guess what happened to her car? No the roo didn't win but her car is now in at the smash repairers.
I hit 11 one year when driving out to the western places. Hit one and a bolt on either side of the bullbar sheared off! That was in a typical Australian car / 4wd.
I will do some research today to find out about hunting Roos.

Wow! Roos sound like they are a huge hazard! Do your insurers cover "roo"

It's more uncertain than I thought. I read that in my state that you have pass shooting criteria. Cannot find anything on recreational shooting though.

It is surprising. One would have thought that with such an abundance of roos it would not be any problem. Is the Greenie influence very powerful in Aus?

Greenies are very powerful and when Labor gets government they ally with the greens.
Kangaroos in population are around 50plus million.
The bleeding heart, do- Gooders , left wing journalists on the tv etc are the ones who stir up things.
I might note many and I mean many Roos are shot by unlicensed shooters. The meat is very lean - no cholesterol but ... greens

Such a shame, Greenies brainwash the city folk - I even saw a Greenie site that stated kangaroos are endangered (!!!) and all harvesting must be banned.

Aus have so many weird and unusual animals that would look so cool in the trophy room!

A big red makes an impressive sight. They grow to over 7 ft high and let's say you don't pat them. Wild ones that is.
Their skins were used by Nike ... greens again.
The skin is very strong but very light.
If someone wants to go hunting Roos I have a contact or two who may be able to help.
Roos are normally shot at night using a strong spotlight. All should be head shot so as not to ruin the meat or skins.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
