That is the truth.....

I still think the tundra, muskeg, alder component of the hike up the valley was maybe the worst......that and the downhill with a full pack after killing yourself on the climb up. Of course, I've never been happier to shoulder a pack with horns and a cape, as I was with my Dall ram.

I definitely learned a lot. I'm heading to the Cassiar Mountains in northern B.C. in 2017 to hunt Stone's sheep and mountain goat. I will definitely need to up my training regimen to be ready for that one, although a lot of it will be from horseback.

That is the truth. My family used to own a couple of horses years ago, but it's been a long time since I've ridden. Luckily, there are several outfits near home that offer trail riding, etc., so I'm going to schedule a few times with them to get used to riding again. In speaking with a guy that hunted with the same outfit last year, he said the first day they were in saddle for over 9 hours getting to sheep country! Talk about a sore ass........


Anyway, another piece of advice the other hunter offered was getting a heavy duty raincoat when riding on the trails. Apparently a lot of the trails are poorly maintained, and the brush is thick. The brush can shred the new technical rain gear, like I have, pretty quickly...... I'm wondering if getting an Filson drover type coat might be the answer. Hot and heavy, but if you're leaving it with the horses it might be the ticket to beat back the brush.....

Something heavy to keep the bush back is a great idea on the ride in.
It will also help keep you warmer.
Sitting on a horse is cold work.

Get your butt ready for that ride! I did an elk hunt in the Teton Wilderness of Wyoming a few years back. 6 to 7 hour ride in. Then, 6 hours a day riding while hunting the next 3 days, then the ride back out. The outfitter recommended panty hose - seriously! I didn't listen to him. It took two weeks for my saddle sores to heal. Next time I do a horseback hunt I will follow his advice. And, probably bring my pair of biking shorts with the foam padding along too.

Yeah, and I thought the same and didn't wear them!!! BTW, they also run a dude ranch (part of where I think they've learned what works for the green horns) and have been the Jackson Hole valley since the '20s. Marvin was 74 when I went with them in 2012 - he road me into the ground. Believe me, by the time I was coming out I wouldn't have cared what I looked like under my hunting pants.

Where do you find panty hose for a horse and how do you get the horse to put them on?

Great hunt.... That KUIU & Sitka gear is very nice.... but very $$$$.... However, I guess if you can afford a Dall hunt, then whose counting.
