Two gun case recommendations

I have the Cabela's double case and it has served me well.

I have the SKB golf case(without bumpout)..Been to Ak 6 times and Africa twice..Can haul 3 guns in cases along with boots and some other gear..About $100..Ready for trip next yr to Africa.

used the americase that rookhawk posted with great results last year

very solid case

Been using tuffpak for 19 yrs.

Mossberg markets a hardcase that looks like it holds golfclubs. It came with the demo-non-firing guns used for Hunter Education classes. It holds five longguns. It's very durable, has wheels (like those rollable suitcases), can be locked and I suspect would go through an airport without drawing undue attention.

Hi Ray,

I think the case of which you speak is indeed, a tough pack or a perfect clone of one. I saw them at hunter's ed in WI recently also. I think they are a great idea for nataional travel but may not be ideal for international since many nations do not permit "filler" stuff put in with guns. TSA type agencies wanting to reserve the right to open and inspect all articles at will except guns, etc.

The tuffpak holds several rifles. I don't put clothing in but I fill a cheap soft rifle case with shooting related paraphernalia (cleaning stuff, glasses sticks etc) to include with the rifle. Everything is very snug in there with the soft rifle cases jammed in. @rookhawk has made some observations about the importance of closed cell foam padding and I am considering adding some to the interior as sort of a belts & suspenders caution. I am not sure if the extra precaution is necessary as my tuffpak took a wallop of some sort on my trip to RSA and there is a long slice into it but it didn't penetrate and the scope was fine on arrival.

Tufpak 2 trips to RSA not a single issue. Been all over the West Coast with it as well. When carrying 1 rifle I put an extra soft case next to one containing the firearm. Pheroze is spot on all gun gear and knives, plus I pack 1 extra set of clothes and my light jacket/vest. Very low profile going through the airport.

I've used just about every case made and most of them are collecting dust in the attic. I've been carrying a SKB double case the guns are separated with a heavy foam partition between them. It's super light and tough. It's made close to 20 trips to Africa another 30 trips to other destinations around the world and it has yet to let me down.

Tuffpak. As we also toured a bit, I put all my hunting clothes in there, along with my binoculars, rangefinder, trekking poles etc. There was no need for additional gun cases as it was quite snug in there. I like that it doesn't look like a rifle case.

This is a tuffpack in the hands of baggage handlers.

Hank said there was no damage to the tuffpak and it was only locked with tsa locks, seems pretty obvious it was taken out and intentionally broken. I don't own any of these cases so I don't have an opinion, just putting out there it wasn't the case

The pistol grip is the easiest place to break a stock.

Are the tuffpak's soft sided?

A baggage handler in training

That is an assumption that is not obvious. Akhams Razor suggests simplest solution is the correct one. Malice and active vandalism is less probable than baggage handling. Absent evidence of someone destroying the gun, gravity and a sudden stop seems the culprit.

That still isn't the simplest answer. A flat drop would not break it like that, a drop on end, no matter how high, when supported from the sides, would not break it like that. Wood does not work that way. Breaking from shock while in a case that shows no damage could only occur from an end drop and it would break off at an angle, not straight across, and it would likely originate from one side of the butt. If you however took this rifle, rested it on one of those nice floor pads that are placed on concrete and held the barrel while kicking it with soft soled shoes such as sneakers, it would break where the wood is thinnest and with out leaving marks- in other words right where this particular one is broken

It the rifle above was in a soft case in a tufpak with some clothing etc packed around it this seems very intentional. I use a Tufpak. Rifle in a soft case with redoxx soft case slid next to it and clothing on the opposite side no way in heck is this going to happen!! That break looks to be a purposeful snap not an accident.
