Turkey

On a related note, I have 3 young girls and have been trying to gently get them interested in hunting. To that end, I bought a single shot .410 a couple years ago but they haven't connected yet, mostly because they rarely come with!

But out of curiosity I hunted with it last year and dumped a big tom at 30 yards. Those TSS shells are no joke!!

@schmijar, you are correct, the TSS shells are a game changer. The 410 with TSS and a good choke is no joke great for kids and adults. The youngster in my group picture shot his long beard with this combo.

My season doesn't open until next weekend both TN and KY.
I have a new 20 ga to try out and trying to decide which of the new box calls I made I'm going with.

It's really remarkable, I was skeptical of the hype but they work.
If I hadn't at the same time discovered that in early morning low light I have astigmatism and the red dot becomes sort of useless I might hunt with it again! Instead I'm thinking of heading the exact opposite direction this season.

Rifles are legal here.
So when my daughter showed interest but could not use a shotgun
I let her us my ar and still keep it inside 50yds
But that was before any 410 turkey loads.

Our season doesn’t open until next weekend but things are looking good. We were there a month ago and saw 36 birds (30 hens & 6 Jakes) feeding across a field. Later in the day on a neighbor’s property there were at least 6 gobblers grazing but didn't get a picture.

Hope to have something on the ground opening day.
That is one large group of turkeys

30 yards with TSS in a 410 is easy. I think my longest with a 410 using TSS was 52yds here in Texas

We opened in SC today. I had no luck this morning, but had several friends that did well.

I have killed 2 in the last 4 days!! Two to go in Alabama

Got one this morning!!

We have a lot this year I have seen plenty of Jake’s and hens so that’s good in our area at least.
What part of Alabama? I used to hunt around Thomasville as well as a few other public land places closer to Birmingham when I lived there.

Counting the days until the annual boys turkey hunt get away.

I have always found turkey hunting a great way to introduce new hunters to the sport. Our group this year will include three new hunters ranging from ages 28 to 68.

@RLD, Agree. Turkey and dove hunting some of the best medicine for getting new hunters started. Nothing better than a gobbler calling, strutting in for the shot. Good luck

Season here in SC got pushed back until 04/03, yesterday. Birds have been in the fields doing their thing for about a month, now if I can just can the time to get in the woods.

Most of the states I hunt turkey in have delayed starts to allow mating. I actually like it. Many of the hens are bred and working their nest. The gobblers are on the “roam” early in the day and looking for action. Less competition from real hens helps.
