I have acquired a 470 NE Heym 88 B double and have ordered a mounting plate from Heym to install an easy to remove red dot sight. Heym says use Docter or Trijicon RMR. Docter sights are not available, so I will go with Trijicon.

I prefer a small dot, one MOA. Does anyone have experience with selecting the right Trijicon model for a Heym double? Thanks for your help here.

Yes, a little bit...

Select a 1 MOA dot if you want accuracy at 100 meters!

RMR model if you desire the (formerly) smallest size Trijicon reflex sight.

SRO if you desire a larger viewing screen with top loading battery.

Read this...

Since I wrote the above article, Trijicon released these newer models:

RMR HD with top loading battery:

RMR CC (Concealed Carry), a smaller version RMR:

RCR enclosed emitter reflex sight:

I prefer the SRO model. Others prefer the original RMR. But these new models look interesting.
I would pick a top loading (battery) model in 1 MOA. Other than that, they are all good, rugged choices!

Mark why do you prefer a 1 MOA over at 2.5 or 3 MOA?

Thanks much for the great education and rapid response.

I like the fit of my rifle with the open sights so I want to keep the red dot profile as low as possible to the rifle rib. As I move my cheek higher or off the comb, I get a reminder that the 470 can bark!

So, would you recommend the RMR as lowest? If the new top loader is similar profile, I’d go with that. I’m fine with smaller viewing screen.

Thanks again for your experience and guidance.

I recommend that you read the article and the many pages of posts that follow it. There is a wealth of combined knowledge shared by many of our members. One of them, a well known Zimbabwean, had a RMR mounting plate attached to his Heym's rib via screws. That removed at least 3/16" of an inch of mounting height. Being the competent engineer that he is, he even posted of photo of his very low mounted RMR on his Heym!

As for the choice of sight based on height, I posted photos of the RMR and SRO side by side in anticipation of just this question : )

Cutting to the chase, yes the new RMR HD should be the lowest profile and it's top loading. The RMR CC may be even smaller but probably not enough to make much difference on a rifle.

Thanks Mark. I’m new to Africa Hunting as I stay away from social media. So I’m learning just how knowledgeable folks here are and what a great resource I’ve discovered.

I have been hunting since I was a boy, and have made over a dozen trips to hunt Africa. I’m always learning and appreciate your guidance. My battery for Africa has been 375 H&H, 404 Jeff, and 458 Lott. Finally able to get a double, but with older eyes, I want the option of a red dot.

Thanks again for your expert help.

Hello @ScottP, welcome to the best forum on the web. Lots of good folks here, with many lifetimes of knowledge. I have learned so much.

Search for @Kevin Peacocke, for Heym 89B with the lowest mount I've seen, I think he got it from Germany, can't remember the company. It looks sweet.

On my 450/400 double, (wish it was a Heym) I ordered the mount from Trijicon for the 12-14mm European rib.
It raises the sight about 1/4" higher, so I don't have the solid cheek weld.
I would not want that shooting a .470!
I have the RMR-09 with adjustable 1 MOA dot.
I looked at the Trijicon SRO, and appreciated the larger field, but went with the RMR for a minimum profile.

It significantly improved my accuracy.

Great help! Thank you.

I am very excited to join Africa Hunting and getting to know many fellow passionate Africa hunters.

I see that you and Mark are fans of the 1MOA dot. Why? I'm in the market for my first red dot (on a double for Buffalo) and although I've only used one on a 22LR AR style gun that I own, I want to lean toward the SRO with the 2.5 MOA thinking it will be a faster site accusation and be adequate out past 100 yards. BUT I really want to hear qualified feedback before I do that. Please & Thanks.

A 1MOA dot "covers" an inch of the target (at 100 yds). A 2.5 covers 2.5 inches.

Suppose you have a 1MOA rifle, and a 2.5MOA red dot. That 1MOA rifle can now vary as much as 3.5MOA on impact.

At least that's how I can best describe it. When you throw that red dot up, how precisely are you placing it, and how do you know? If it's actually (say) 2.5 inches high, and your "1MOA Cone" impacts at the low point, where are you really?

A competitive shooter may be able to describe it better than I, but that's how it looks in my mind. The real bottom line for me is the smaller the dot, the more precisely I can plant it.

In your opinion, is site accusation as fast/easy with the smaller dot? I worry most about that with my older eyes....Thanks for the feedback too!

Gentlemen,

I explained why a 1 MOA is preferable in the Trijicon reflex sights in the article I wrote. It is more complicated that the listed dot sizes. Luckily, this information is free...

Member Kevin Peacock can provide you for the low profile RMR mount. I have one at this time. I also have a Heym QD mount. There is no comparison between the two.
I will soon be mounting the low profile on my wife’s 89b.

A couple of notes the low profile will need to be milled from 10mm to approximately 11.8mm. The second note is a Heym 89b rib is tapered, narrower at the rear.

Question is if the Heym mount for RMR will still work for this model?
Good question but I can't imagine Trijicon would F that up!

From the Trijicon RMR HD webpage:

IDENTICAL FOOTPRINT AS RMR

Mounts easily on popular red-dot-ready pistols using the same base as Trijicon RMR®.

For the fully enclosed Trijicon RCR reflex sight, I had to watch their mounting video to verify that it mounts to any RMR footprint mount.

Another option, which holds the reputation of extreme durability, is the aimpoint ACRO p2. This does, however, have a different footprint and I'm unsure of mounting options for your particular application.

You may consider a cheek pad or even riser if necessary to get a better cheek weld.
