I came across this list and thought it was interesting: http://www.wideopenspaces.com/top-10-animals-to-hunt-in-africa/

Mine is a little different. I've shot the three animals in bold which means I still have plenty of hunting left to do!
  1. Kudu
  2. Impala
  3. Gemsbok
  4. Zebra
  5. Wildebeest
  6. Waterbuck
  7. Eland
  8. Nyala
  9. Springbok
  10. Warthog
What's on everyone's list?

Nah, they lost me when they included two species of dangerous game.

First, if it isn't available in RSA, Namibia, Botswana, or Zimbabwe, it's off my list.

With that stipulation I divide as follows:

Dangerous Game (off my list)

Varmints and misc. including croc and hippo (off my list)

Plains Game:

Roan, Red Lechwe, tsessebe, and sable off my list because of expense

Tiny twelve, off my list (lack of bang for buck)

So remaining:

warthog
Greater Kudu
Blue Wildebeest
Black Wildebeest
Gemsbok
Red Hartebeest
giraffe
waterbuck
nyala
bushbuck
Burchell's Zebra
Mountain Zebra
eland
impala
bontebok/blesbok
springbok

Hi Marius! How are you doing?

Does my list make sense?

Rob

If I had to list my top 10, from that last list it would be: Blue Wildebeest, Black Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Greater Kudu, Nyala, Burchell's Zebra, eland, waterbuck, blesbok, and giraffe.

My list is for plains game is as follows, and in no particular order:

Kudu
bushbuck
bush pig
warthog
blesbok
zebra (I don't really care about subspecies)
waterbuck (took a cow waterbuck on my last safari, would like to take a bull)
blue wildebeest
black wildebeest
gemsbok
hartebeest
eland
jackal
springbok
Impala
common reedbuck
Nyala

Those are what are on the list today.......it could change magically tomorrow!;) ( the animals that are in bold print are those that I took on my one and only safari last summer).

As far as dangerous game, the only one I'm really interested in is cape buffalo. I suppose if the opportunity presented itself, and the price was right, I would shoot a croc.....but I have no desire to shoot elephant, lion, leopard, hippo, etc.
...as for the smaller species, tiny ten, etc.: I don't think size of an animal has much to do with it's sportingness.......a good stalk or difficult hunt is where I get my "bang for the buck". The only smaller species that I would be interested in hunting at this particular time is common duiker.

If I ever trip and fall into a huge pile of money, then sable, roan, and red lechwe are on the list!:D

And Tsessebe?

And Tsessebe?

No, I don't think so.......they don't do much for me. The sable & lechwe would be definite "musts", but the roan would probably be on the bottom of the list, even if it was doable from a money stand point.

I went last year, and killed 2 impala, a gemsbok, and and a warthog. I was bowhunting, so I saw a lot more that could have been killed with a rifle. My top 10 that I haven't killed would be as follows.

1. Zebra
2. Kudu
3. Blue Wildebeest
4. Waterbuck
5. Blesbok
6. Nyala
7. Bushbuck
8. Red hartebeest
9. Eland
10. Giraffe (even though I don't know what the hell I'd do with one)

As far as dangerous game, the only two that really appeal to me are leopard, and Cape Buffalo.

I think a top 10 is completely personal and it changes. 5 years ago I had no desire to shoot a zebra. I shot one in 2011. There is also a list of what you want to hunt, what you have hunted, etc. Always another mountain to climb, I suppose.

I haven't shot an impala, but my wife and my son have and I have no real desire to shoot one myself. But, they have 3 warthogs between them and when a nice one trotted out to the water hole, I shot him without hesitation. We needed another warthog like a hole in the head, but they are common, cheap, and sometimes they just move to the top of the list. Something fun about them. I have no idea why a warthog was on my list, and I'd probably shoot another. And I'd already shot one before for leopard bait, but there is just something about the damn things that makes me want to shoot them.

I will say that kudu hold a place on my list, despite having a nice one on my wall that I worked hard for. I'd hunt kudu again in a heartbeat, it is a magnificent animal and plenty of challenge.

That said, my next trip to Africa is for dangerous game and I plan to kind of focus on the dangerous stuff that requires walking for a while. Someday I'll be too old for it and I don't want to miss my chance. Leopard can wait- if I'm too old to sit in a ground blind they may as well use me for bait.

Gotta agree with that.

Top ten left to take are

1. Lion
2. Buffalo
3. Nyala
4. Bushbuck
5. Blesbok
6. Springbok (slam so I will include as one)
7. Waterbuck (I should have already shot one of these darn things)
8. Black Wildebeest
9. Hartebeest
10. Leopard

Others wanted are............ Grey Duiker, Sable, Giraffe, Red and Black Lechwe, Mountain Zebra, Puku, Kob, Vaal Rhebok, Mountain Reedbuck, Lesser Kudu, Grants Gazelle, and a Thomsons Gazelle....... just a few...........

I've taken
Kudu, Common Eland, Zebra, Impala, Blue Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Warthog, Jackal and Steinbok...... And there's not a single one that I wouldn't hunt again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COME ON LOTTERY!!!!

I want one of all of them. Not sure I could make a top ten list.

Some pretty goods lists there!

I love these.... I took 7 of the 10....my first trip. Going back in 16 to knock out the other 3 + some.... At some point I'd like to add a Cape Buff & Leopard.... 2 cents.

I guess I am the odd-ball.

I was fortunate enough to take a beautiful cape kudu, duiker, cull warthog, and cull cape bushbuck on my first trip. Daughters took a blesbuck and impala.

On my list of really wants are (in no particular order):
1) Vaal Rhebok
2) Klipspringer
3) Oribi
4) Black Wildebeest
5) Trophy Cape Bushbuck
6) After seing some photos of the Damara Dik-Dik.... I gotta have one!
7) A springbok just to say I have one
8) Mountain Reedbuck.
9) Nyala (wasnt on my list before, but after seeing how beautiful they are... gotta have one)
10) Another Kudu... always another Kudu!
11) I guess at some point I will take a gemsbok, but they just are not firing me up at the moment.
12) To work my way on the tiny ten, I still "need" the grysbok species and a blue and red duiker.

Not plains game, but I am really getting the itch for a Cape Buffalo.
Not African, but my bucket list has a roebuck on it.

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
