Tonight is going to be a very long night

It’s a vasodilator that’s is used for pulmonary hypertension

In the end do they still believe it was Pneumonia?

Also, your posting of your vet bills is a frustrating reminder of how bad vet bills have gotten as well. It is getting as bad as human healthcare only without any reasonable insurance to cover any of the costs. Our dog is on some regular meds and the cost of them is ridiculously overpriced. Even when they get a routine medicine like an antibiotic the cost is often more than the same prescription for a human.

Yes it was pneumonia. He’s comfortable now and really happy to be home but he still has a ways to go.
I will say this, that hospital was crazy! Just like if not better than human hospitals! All the kennels and runs had all the computerized monitors, they all had cameras and there was a huge bank of large screen tv’s so they were always watched. They had both X-Ray and CT scan rooms, multiple operating rooms that looked really advanced, as well as a pretty big staff that included Doctors, Nurses, and techs.
So I guess someone has to pay for all that.
Seriously this hospital was more advanced than some hospitals I’ve been in lol
I’ve been hitting reload on this thread all day but been afraid to ask.
Good ole Charlie.
Thank you Lone Star for keeping him in you thoughts! It means a lot! Everyone here has been so kind as always and it helped for me to talk about it when I was so worried

At home and recovering!

:A Banana::E Dancing:

Good news Charlie!

Glad Charlie is better! So scary… We’ve had our share of vet bills, pet hospital visits, and Chemo treatment for Lymphoma for our German Shepard Bo, which extended his life another 2 years. Unfortunately we lost him this time last year…

You just have to make the best of your time with them while you have them.

Over here it is very common to have a health insurance for your dog. Cost a bit but worth it!

I always had the impression that veterinary medicinesvwss cheaper than human medicines in the US (probably from reading to much prepper-stuff, they used to recommend to stock up on the veterinary equalients of medicines)?.

And Charlie -keep fighting and get well!

Great news @CZDiesel

Hope the recovery continues.

@CZDiesel really glad to hear that you have gotten him home and wishing the both of you the best of luck in his recovery. It’s a real bugger when they get sick. Got another year with ours before he past it cost us a similar amount but it was worth it!

It used to be that way. And for a few things it can be. Some medicines are essentially the same drug for animals and for humans, such as livestock dewormer, or fish antibiotics, and those things are typically cheaper than the human equivalent.

However, just about anything you need prescribed from a veterinarian is going to cost you as much or more than the human equivalent nowadays. If it is something that you can pick up at the local farming feed store, it is usually relatively cheap.

It was never necessarily cheap to take your dog to the vet, but the costs have exploded relatively recently.

I’m so sorry for you loss! One never really gets over it! I lost my last Beagle 8 years ago and I still miss him…

What do they say? Insurance is for pessimists. I think I will look forward to it the next go around and join the pessimists

Very sorry for your loss! Yes I would do anything for just another good couple months!
When I thought he might be transported to Denver to a specialist I pulled $50k out of my investment fund and was willing to spend it! True Story!
He is my boy, he is family and all my friends and family treat him as such. He actually thinks he’s in charge lol I’m not sure he’s wrong lol

I am very glad to hear he is back home and doing a bit better. How old is he?

I have been in some sketchy hospitals as well, and you're right, if the place is going to be that advanced, the money is going to have to come from somewhere.

Charlie is 12-1/2 so he’s getting up there but Beagles live longer than most breeds and average 15yrs+ so he’s still got some gas in the tank.
I had taken him for a checkup early this year and they did a complete bloodwork on him and every came up great! Kidneys, liver no problem. I then took him for a complete Cardio exam and the cardiologist said he had a great heart…
So if I can get him through this pneumonia I hope we can spend another couple years together at least

For realists..

It was never necessarily cheap to take your dog to the vet, but the costs have exploded relatively recently.

And options for treatment has explored. From dewormimg, vaccines and euthanasia to just-as-good healthcare as for humans.

I had the opposite experience. My last dog was on the same pain med as my dad. Got them filled at the same pharmacy. When the pharmacist rang it up as animal meds it was cheaper than even the co-pay on my dad’s insurance. I asked her if that was common she said if they treat it as labeled for animal use it is usually cheaper but a lot of pharmacies just ring it up u set the human use label even though it’s the same pill.

Looking at my little French Britt sleeping at my feet. Three years ago I had to rush her seven hours to Minneapolis in the worst storm of the century (4' of snow in three days!). She had a tumor the size of a softball next to her liver that was obstructing breathing and heart rate. Just the month before she'd been hunting hard for six weeks in Montana. "Puppy" simply crashed one morning. They asked me if I was willing to pay for surgery on an eleven year-old dog to remove a giant ball of cancer. "The long term prognosis is not great." How much "long term" can I expect with an eleven year-old dog? I didn't bat an eye. The bill was $12K. Poor little fart barely made it. She finally started to eat a bit of canned chicken the last day. They wanted to hang onto her longer but I said no. I think separation anxiety was killing her. At checkout I asked if they could throw in a can of chicken so we could get on the road. "No, we have already made up the bill." "Are you f**ing kidding me? I am writing you a gawdam check for twelve thousand dollars (US!!) and you can't give us a can of chicken for this poor little dog!" And I DID not say it quietly! Everyone in the lobby could hear me. As we were heading across the parking lot a young black college intern came running after us with a couple cans of chicken. "Man, that sucks. I'm so sorry."

Last season my Lab came up lame again and little Puppy had to step up to the plate again (Ellie tore her right ACL during 2023 season). Little stinker hunted like a dog half her thirteen years. And there's every indication she may have one more season ahead at age fourteen. FINALLY those dogs saw a good year for birds like what Puppy knew her first three hunting seasons. Shot close to fifty uplands.

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
