I really don’t want luxury, just doesn’t feel right. Clean, comfortable and basic is ideal for me. We stopped in two places last year, one was absolutely perfect, brick chalets with a bedroom, dressing room and bathroom and a communal dining room. All had a Rhodesian donkey boiler and we had hot water and electricity for a couple of hours every evening.
Basic to us but absolutely comfortable and far better than most local people’s living conditions.
We then stayed somewhere more luxurious, with family friends. Being totally honest, it was too much, so far removed from the lives of local people, it didn’t seem right at all and was totally disconnected to the bush around. Understandable if you live there but I wouldn’t want the cost of it to be factored in to my hunting.
The atmosphere is most important to me. The first camp was a happy place, it felt like home straight away, other places feel like a hotel. For me, I don’t want to feel like a tourist sheltered from what is around me, I want to feel like I am staying with friends.
The accommodation in Scotland is generally comfortable but basic. Most lodges I have stayed in only have basic heating, limited peaty hot water. I always think that people staying in luxury hotels are missing out.
