These animals deserve their own rifle

Elephant rigby 500NE
Hippo land my cz550 500 Jeffery
Lion rigby 416
Buffalo rigby 470...or rigby 450NE
Leopard rigby 350
Crocodile m98 9.3x62
Brown bear my brockman marlin 45-70
Moose Jeffery 404
Mountain lion m98 7x57 or m94 carbine in 30-30
Cougar few jagermeister brain shots

In contrast to the threads seeking one do it all rifle, I think each of these “big ticket” animals deserves their own rifle and optic:

1. Elephant
2. Hippo
3. Lion
4. Cape Buffalo
5. Leopard
6. Crocodile
7. Brown Bear
8. Moose
9. Mountain Lion/Cougar

Im curious, what nine gun battery would you put together (regardless of cost)?
Elephant - Heym 89B in 500NE
Hippo - in Water 375Ruger, On land Heym 89B 470NE
Lion - .375HH
Cape Buffalo - In the brush Heym 450/400 3"NE for fast nr 2 shoot, Open terrain 416Rigby (416Ruger is the best, but large supply issues)
Leopard - .35Whelen with a soft bonded Norma 250grs Oryx bullet.
Crocodile - 300WSM Precision both in Water and on land.
Brown Bear - 9,3x62
Moose - 30-06
Cougar - 308W

That to many guns so here's the a more real choice:

Elephant, Hippo on land, Cape buffalo in brush - Heym 89 B in 450/400 3"NE
Hippo in water, Lion, Cape buffalo in the open, Brown bear - .375HH or 375Ruger (the best on paper, but 375HH have no resupply issues)
Leopard, crocodile, moose - 300WSM
Cougar - 308

Franz, you're as bad as me: a rifle battery is like a golfbag--each shot deserves its own specialized tool! :ROFLMAO:

Here's what I would use:

1. Elephant: a Westley Richards .577 double rifle
2. Hippo: a Jeffery .500 magazine rifle
3. Lion: a .375 H&H (double or magazine) loaded with 270-grainers
4. Cape buffalo: a Rigby Mauser in .416
5. Leopard: a .318 WR, double or magazine
6. Crocodile: a nice .30-06
7. Brown bear: a .404 Jeffery magazine
8. Moose: a .405 Winchester 1895
9. Mountain lion: a 7x57 like the one I just got
10. Cougar: a Margarita heavy on the tequila

How does that sound?
Does not happen without pic....!!!

Moose do not require anything special. Neither do Caribou. Grab what ever the f@ck.. but, bring the best optics you can. Brown bears are a little different.

Rapier or broadsword. Both are deadly in the right hands and the former is a lot easier to carry.

Elephant R8 .375
Hippo R8 .375
Lion R8 .375
Buffalo R8 .375
Leopard R8 .300 Win Mag or half a dozen other choices
Croc R8 .375
Brown Bear R8 .375
Moose R8 .300 Win Mag
Cougar Almost anything bigger than a .22 Mag
Beat me to it. ;)

Interesting.
I have done the same as an engineer - fit the rifle to the quarry.
But then I learned that the .275 Rigby, .300 HH, .375 HH or .416 Rigby covers the gamut.
An in a pinch, the .375 HH covers the gamut just as well.

I have used the .375 HH on everything up to elephant.

I shoot an R8 Blaser or a Model 70/Mauser - makes no difference. Blaser is more accurate and easier to operate.

1. Elephant - 458 Lott Ruger RSM
2. Hippo water - 338 Win mag Browning Abolt
3. Lion - 375 Ruger Hawkeye Guide gun
4. Buffalo - 416 Ruger Hawkeye African
5. Leopard - 9.3x62 CZ 550 Kevlar Carbine
6. Crocodile - 300 Win mag Hawkeye M77
7. Brown bear - 375 Ruger Alaskan
8. Moose - 35 Whelen Ruger Hawkeye M77
9. Mountain lion - 375 Winchester Big Bore 94 lever action.

These are all rifles I already own, so that's what I based my list on. Some of the other lists are quite impressive. But I thought I would stick with what I have. That allows me to save the money to actually do these trips!

OK, I apparently did not get enough sleep. I came in thinking from the thread title that this was a hypothetical exercise on what type of rifle these animals should have if they could shoot back.:ROFLMAO:

Interesting read for me nonetheless.

Elephant - .470
Hippo(on land) - .470
Lion - .375H&H
Cape Buffalo -.470 or .404J
Leopard - .300win
Crocodile- .375H&H

Moose - .300Win
Mountain lion - .30-30 or .270

Just for fun, in theory, from my current battery of rifles & bullets:

1) Elephant: 458 B&M + CEB 450 solids
2) Hippo: 458 B&M + CEB 400 solids
3) Lion: 458 B&M + CEB 370 Raptor/400 solids
4) Cape Buffalo: 458 B&M + CEB 370 Raptor/400 solids
5) Leopard on bait: 300 WSM + 165 TSX
or …458 B&M + CEB 295 Raptors
5) Leopard w/ hounds: 12 ga + buckshot
6) Crocodile: 300 WSM + 165 TSX
7) Brown Bear: 458 B&M + CEB 370 Raptor/400 solids
8) Moose: 458 B&M + CEB 295 Raptors
9.) Mt. Lion: 243 win + 80 TTSX

My take is a bit different. If you have a versatile rifle, use it often. Nothing more versatile and capable than the .375 H&H. I have used mine for the top 8 on your list, then a .30-.30 win for the cougar. I prefer to handle and remember what that rifle has done in my hands.

Double Bolt or single shot

9. Mountain Lion/Cougar - 30/30 Chapuis: Westley Richards 360 HV Nitro
2 guns per animal is even better!!

I’m with @Red Leg and @BeeMaa
I’ll stick with what I’m comfortable with, which happens to be an R8 in .375 and either a .300 WM or 7mm RM.
I’ve taken 11 DG and while I’m tempted to get a big double, I would rather spend the money on another hunt. And… I know i shoot better with my R8.

With that said, I would buy a .404 J or .416 Rem R8 barrel today if they were easy to find.

I’ll jump in with what I have either hunted said animal with or what I’d like to in a perfect world.

Elephant- Plan on using a Model 70 in 416 Rem this year. This will be my first elephant hunt.
Hippo-I shot my hippo, on land, with a Model 70 404Jeffery. I’d gladly use that again. I’d only shoot one in the water if bait was urgently needed and any accurate rifle 30 caliber and up would work for that.
Lion-I plan on using my Model 70 in 375H&H
Cape Buffalo-I’ve used a CZ550 in 375 H&H and a Model 70 in 458 Win Mag. Plan on using a the same 416 I’m going use on my elephant this year. If Im shooting buffalo or on land hippo, I’ll have either a 416 or 404 in hand.
Leopard-I shot mine with a Browning A-bolt chambered in 300 Win Mag. Worked great. Any 30 caliber and up, where legal would be fine.
Croc-I’d use my 300 Win Mag again, as it’s plenty to do the job and I shoot it well. I’d even consider using my 7PRC, if legal. Plus I’d prefer not to shoot the larger calibers prone and it’s quite possible the shot on a croc would be prone.
Brown Bear- i used my 300 Win Mag on mine. If I ever decide to hunt another one or if I go for an interior grizzly, I’d use my Ruger M77, stainless/laminate in 9.3x62 Mauser.
Moose-I shot mine with my 300 Win Mag (sensing a theme here). If I were to hunt another one it would be with my Ruger M77 in 35 Whelen.
Cougar-Not too concerned with the rifle on a cougar hunt. I’d just ask to use the guides weapon to keep from having to travel with one. That’s what I’ve done on my 2 previous cougar hunts. Still haven’t gotten a cat.

Now, if I wasn’t considering rifles that I already had and could get a battery pelt rifles, I get 3 from ParkWest Arms, made in 300 Win, 375 H&H and 404Jeffery and go have myself a grand old time for sure.
