The other love of your life

My black lab Charlie. He makes sure he walks me at least 2 miles twice a day.
My wood, carpentry, metal work shop.
My 2 kids , 5 grandkids and 6 great grandkids and 3 more on the way.
Chainsaws and being out in the woods. Grew up logging. Got more sawdust in me than blood.

My only other real hobby/fun? is this vintage CHB trawler (Taiwan tub), called a 34' but actually about 37' overall.
This is for cruising the best cruising grounds in the US, the San Juan Islands which are just a stones throw more or less from home. Comfortable boat with aft cabin, diesel powered, slow but economical (just like its owner!

That is truly awesome! The cruising in Alaska is pretty good as well!

That’s a ride I’d like to take! Coming from Saskatchewan, I love to see the ocean! So much different wildlife to see.

Fun topic for getting to know people. I have two "things " I love and a lot of people

My battered old compact Bible. I picked it up when I was maybe 15 and getting more serious about my faith. Its floated down rivers, rode in my pack and comforted me in many dark moments from working wilderness therapy and learning how to deal with a crazy world to deaths of loved ones.

Second would be my cabin and land in Alaska. This is why I won't be in Africa for a good while. Gotta pay for stuff. But I'm turning it into sort of a basecamp for "Uncle Activities."

Of course more important than items are the people who borrow them.

I'm blessed with a gang of "nephews" in Alaska.

And I have an actual nephew in "Lesser 48" he already wants to come to Alaska to play in snow and shoot a bear; with his water gun. We'll work on his armament choices as he gets older. And yes he has me wrapped around his little finger! Africa dreams may be further delayed because I have plans to take him adventuring up here as soon as he's big enough... I think 8 is old enough. I can see the first day of 3rd grade

Teacher "what did you do this summer?"

Other kid "We went to Disney World"

Nephew "I killed a bear, and ate it!"

Being a first nations Australian a bumerang must be one of those copies of our boomerangs that was made in China or a boomerang that doesn't come back, bummer.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

I loved the old song "My Boomerang Won't Come Back." I guess now its considered insensitive but we laughed at the absurdity of it. Not sure how folks down there feel about it.

We couldn't give 2 shots were not as politically correct as others. We take the piss out of ourselves all the time.
We had some Aboriginal terrorists once. They stole a car and were going to blow up Ayers Rock.
Lucky they caught caught they. They got 3 Bob Drinkin, Bin Smokin, and Bin Stealin. They c ant find the forth one him Bin Workin.
The police got all the information off their cousin Bob Laggin.
As we can take the piss out of ourselves it make it easier to put up with racism and it also shuts them up because they don't know how to react to the jokes.

Yeah but its in Alaska! Even Ketchikan is over 600 miles from home. Havent been to AK in over 25 years and probably never will again. Lived there twice, Sitka both times.
Worked on tugs towing back and forth from Seattle to AK all the way to Kotzebue and all ports major and minor in between, though never did stop in Kodiak.
I like my cruising a little closer to home now and the SJ Islands are so nice.

I have one of the most complete Al Macinnis game worn collection of the hockey hall of famer

Jersies: Flames, Blues early style, Blues later style (with captain patch), skills jersey when he won his last hardest shot contest, All Star game from the night after, and a Canadian Olympic practice.
Additionally 6 different styles of sticks ranging from his entire career.

Is it too early in the night to answer SCOTCH? HaHa!
On a serious note, I'd say good friends are the main thing I'm learning to cherish over personal belongings. I've noticed the older I get, the more minimalist I become. I love simplicity these days. It's the main reason I won't buy a second gun safe, and when I buy a rifle, many times I will sell another just to keep from needing another safe. But with that said, there is no other material thing in existence that comes anywhere near my love for guns. Not even close.
@TOBY458
My dad once told me if you can count the number of real friends on one hand you have done well if you use two hands you are an exceptional person. You only know who your real friends are WTSHTF. We all have a lot of fair weather friends but real ones are to be cherished.

@Badboymelvin.
Russ it's heat to see someone else that has found being a Christian is a good choice. I was in a similar position and some people thought I would be found dead in a gutter somewhere after another bad choice. One good thing I was never into drugs. That was one of the smartest choices I've made in life.
As for powerlifting well done. My body suffered enough abuse thru work and other things. Now I do sit ups. Sit up to get out of bed and finish it when I lay down at night.
My bilateral bicep curls consist of drinking my first coffee left handed and my second one right handed nowdays.
Getting old can be a bitch at times and I'm only 62.
Bob
Thanks for that Bob. I enjoyed reading that! :D Beers:

Cheers!

Russ

Land. Land where I live and where I grew up in Saskatchewan, and where I spend my best thinking and "being" time. That's the land of my ancestors.
And also, a second quite distant piece of Land that we have as our summer home, a little log cabin in the Northern B.C. Bush. A place to play " pioneer and homesteader" .
And third but just as special is Land that is our hunting camp. Full of opportunity and room to roam, and plenty of game big and small. The land formed me into who I am, and what I do.

wife and kids
blaser
my land cruiser's
the farm, my land, improving it for the future and for the animals.

We all love our rifles and guns, but what other posessions do you have that make your heart happy?
i have two, the first is my Series 1 Land Rover that we take on hunts and I drive every day.
the other is boats, fishing boats for Lake Kariba tiger fishing mostly. The flagship is a 22ft Interceptor hull with a Yamaha 250 SHO 4 stroke on the back, quite fast. My daughter drives this one, she has her skippers license and can handle it better than I. The second is a 19ft Falcon with a Yamaha 115 4 stroke. My brother and I use this one. Number three is a Samurai, also 19ft with an old dog Evinrude 150 on the back.
Why so many boats? Because I always fish in s group with family and friends and a dozen people on one boat is a bit much, especially when hooks start flying around!

Fishing is a big part of my life, but boats.... bloody hell they are the best and worst things in life!

you should come up to my side of the world in northern Zambia on lake Tanganyika and participate in our annual fishing competition. I think you’d enjoy it.
6 days of enjoyment.
Those falcons do well on big water.

A wise man once said a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water you throw money in.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
