The mythical single rifle

Other options to consider (provided you're a reloader if chambered for the MS proprietary cartridges of 8X57MS, 9X57MS, 9,5X57MS):

Brian you are my go to guy for all question Mannlicher Schoenauer. Not often I ever have the need to correct your information but all the MS proprietary cartridges are 56 mm long the 57 mm were all Mauser creations. I hope you have a safe, healthy holiday season. Good shooting.

I do handload but if I were to have "only one", I would prefer a common/popular cartridge like the .30-06. I'm already relegated to handloads for 8x60 or even the x57s as they are not that common. Luckily common enough to get few boxes here and there and so have enough for hunting.

OOOOOOOps on the 9X56 (not 9X57) - M1905 and 8X56 (not 8X57) - M1908. I must have had a bout of oldtimers, thank you for the correction.

The M1910 was, however, 9.5X57 and the original MS proprietary cartridge (M1900, Y1903, M1903) was 6.5X54.

The Mannlicher Schoenauer proprietary cartridges with DWM numbers:

Notice the 6.5X54MS is listed above as 6.5X53 and cross referenced as 6.7X53, also 8X56 is cross referenced as 8.2X56. The 9.5X57 was listed as 9.5X56 in some catalogs (as well as 9.5X56.5) and even on some DWM boxes though the Eley (Kynoch) drawing shows true dimension as 2.25" (57.15mm). Some references measured from base, some from extraction groove.

The M1924 'Sequoia' Mannlicher Schoenauers were chambered for '30-'06.

They are referred to in the 1939 Stoeger ad above as "U.S.1906 Cartridge".

Ok, haven't seen this mentioned yet! One rifle, A TC Encore & a golf bag full of extra bbls!
I had a friend who conned me into shooting his encore with a 45-70 barrel and 410 grain load. Gave me a gash on top of my head that took 4 stitches to close. He sold the barrel after that, he had never fired it. I got even by having him shoot a friends 450 nitro express double rifle. At h least he didn’t need stitches to stem the bleeding. What are fiends for?

As I said the man knows his Mannlicher’s.

Thank you, sir.

I am not the foremost authority, there are certainly those who know more than I (Axel Eichendorff comes to mind), but I do try.

Thanks for 'keeping me honest' by correcting my error re: 8X56 and 9X56 (not X57).

R8 in a 7 rem mag if only North America. Otherwise R8 with a .375. I’ve yet to try light bullets in the .375 for elk, I suspect it would be a good combo and sway my first choice.

Well, maybe not that bbl?????

If I'm restricted to rifles I own its my 35 Whelen, if not I'd pick a 375 H&H.

Well given the paremeters, I'd use one of my 35 Whelens. Like the 9.3 x 62 but waaaaay better!
(zzzzzzzz kersplash...)

As far as I know there are certain countries that restrict any caliber that was ever used in a war.
I might be wrong but I think France is one.
I don't know all the finer details but I read that a 308 is not allowed as it is basically a 7.62x 51.
I took my 308 to RSA and no one even looked at it. The only problem was one digit was wrong on the serial number from Rifle Permits. SAPS was going to confiscate my rifle but I had a hard copy of my own, showed it to them and that cleared it up. ALWAYS have a copy of all paperwork.

I suppose it's legitimate to name a rifle I already have: a Krieghoff Ulm Primus Bockbüchsflinte in calibers 7X75 SE vom Hofe/12 gauge, with full length insert barrel in 6X52R Brettschneider (.25-35 necked down to 6mm, or .22 Savage High Power necked up). Add a pair of 12 gauge shot barrels with screw in chokes, and I'm all set for whatever plains game may come along, plus any kind of game bird.

For North America, hard to top the old mighty 30-06 with so many bullets to choose from and in normal times, ammo was easy to find. If you reload, even better, I'm starting to see more .30 bullets back in stock, powder and primers are still hard to find. You can shoot a 220 Gr. Nosler Partition and be right up there with the .35 Whelen & some 375 H& H loads.

for a 1 gun, non dg rifle, an 06 or 300 win would be a pretty good one (and if i could not hunt france, MEH, who cares :)

but as others have said, a single gun for a true hunter is just not a realistic goal and i tend to dismiss these questions because it would be too hard and unnecessary to accommodate . i guess if i lived in a foreign country, where i was required to only have one....then i would do some soul searching. BUT, i live in the good ol USA and don't have to fret over such trivial concerns. thank you god!

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
