The A To Z Of Hunting The Indian Leopard

Dear @Captain Nwz,

Maybe you are not aware of the potential, but hunting in tropical far east was very unknown subject or majority of forum members here, myself included.

Then Khawsik and major Khan joined in, followed by you. And you opened one completely new perspective on this forum.

All your posts are well accepted, and very welcomed.

And Bangladesh is suddenly becoming famous.

I am sure that there is potential in Bangladesh to start some commercial hunting, for visiting hunters.

I can suggest to start one thread, on this topic.

- Importation laws for hunting firearms.
- visa requirements for visiting hunters
- How to find a PH, or local shikaris.
- Hunting seasons, game species available, etc.
- Hunting on private properties, or on govt properties.
- Export of trophies, etc
- General instructions how to arrange for hunt.
- all relevant info

From my perspective I can see a great potential in Bangladesh as hunting destination, obviously being the last bearer of old Indian hunting tradition, based on all writings by you and Kawshik and major Khan.

But of all this we all know not too much.

Looking forward to your forthcoming input!
mark-hunter , alright . Here is how it is :
Foreigners are allowed to bring two firearms ( as long as it is not a fully automatic weapon ) into the country of any calibre except a .303 British calibre ( this law has remained unchanged since the time when India , Pakistan and Bangladesh were a British colony ) . They can bring 250 cartridges with them ( with the first hundred cartridges being duty free ) .
They will not cause any problems with Visa , unless if you are from a Middle Eastern country ( during the previous government's reign , a rancid number of Middle Eastern immigrants were allowed into our country and religious extremism based crimes and killings became very common . Our current government has fortunately deported most of them now and imprisoned or executed the criminals. Needless to say , we Bangladeshis do not like Middle Eastern immigrants in our country ).

In Bangladesh , you can only hunt in forested area with written police permission from the D.C of the nearest police station from the area where you intend to hunt .
Game Species include :
Sambhar Deer
Chital Deer
Barking Deer
Hog Deer
Mouse Deer
Quails
Pigeons
Doves
Horelle bird
Hares
Ducks
Geese ( mostly , Greylag geese )
Cranes.
Boars

Bears are here , but the police does not give permission to hunt them in forested area. They are only hunted on private land , if a bear manages to get into private property ( like the Sylhet Tea Estate , where Kawshik lives ) .
Leopards and Royal Bengal Tigers are present . However , they are a protected species save for the odd man eater.

The police gives permission each year for two fully mature deer of each species and a specified amount of water fowl ( that is based on the discretion of the DC . However , it is never less than a dozen per person . ) There are no bag limits on upland birds or hares .
In private land , everything is at the land owner's discretion . For instance , Kawshik lives in the Sylhet Tea Estate . Chital Deer , Wild Boars , Hog Deer and the odd bear frequently come into his land which he can shoot at his own discretion.
The best season for shikar is from mid November to mid January .
Trophies can definitely be exported . Kawshik's niece's fiance and his family frequently take back Sambhar , Chital, Barking and Hog Deer skins and antlers back to the States .
Finding a professional shikari... This is where things get tricky . You see... Hunting was never commercialized in Bangladesh , the way it is in Africa or the States ( We are unfortunately , still a third world country ) . The local people who go hunting , usually form a friend circle and then make a plan go hunting after applying for police permission . Most foreigners do not hunt in Bangladesh unless if they personally know a local hunter . For example , Kawshik's niece's fiance and his family go hunting with Kawshik , Poton and if my schedule permits it , me . That said, should any of you gentlemen ever wish to hunt in Bangladesh , me , Kawshik , Poton or anyone in our friend circle would be more than happy to guide you all for free ( l consider you all Kawshik's friends , anyway ). You have my standing invitation. Just let me know three months in advance.
Regarding the scope of foreigners hunting down a man eating leopard , it is a very hit and miss situation . Let me explain why . Firstly , the government is very reluctant to let a foreign visitor go after a man eating leopard or Royal Bengal Tiger , because if the foreigner gets killed or injured , then the Bangladesh government has a great deal to answer for . This can be circumvented if the foreign hunter is being accompanied by a local shikari . However , the chance of the foreign visitor actually securing the leopard successfully , is about 50-50 . This is because Bangladesh , is surrounded by India on three sides and most of our forested area is near our borders . If the man eater goes into Indian territory , then we no longer have any jurisdiction to kill it . Thus , imagine if an eager and well meaning American or European hunter gets news of a man eating leopard in Bangladesh and he comes to Bangladesh with a one month Visa after importing his two firearms into the country . However , upon reaching Bangladesh , he realizes that the man eater is now in Indian territory . The poor gentleman has spent all his money and time for nothing .
Recently , there is a man eating leopard which has been menacing the village areas around the Sundarbans . I waited ten days to kill it in December of 2019 . However , it has gone into Indian territory now.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for a lengthy answer! (y)

Does it require prior police permission, or written consent, to bring the rifles into country, or is it declared on arrival, only?

mark-hunter , it is my pleasure . The rifles may be declared on arrival.

You've made an amazing offer captain Newaz,
The opportunity to hunt with any of you fine men and hear your stories in person would be quite the adventure
Wade J VanGinkel , the pleasure would be mine. I could learn so much from all of you fine gentlemen , as well.

Dear @Captain Nwz
Hope you dont mind, my asking...

Can you give some estimate of costs, for visiting hunter, sportsman?
How long would it be necessary to plan for stay?
What is the best season?

I know that questions depend on which animals to hunt, etc, but just to get a general idea...

We don't want to obligate you. There are no outfitter in your country that organize something for foreign hunters ?

For me it's about sambar deer hunting. I prefer to hunt the game in its country of origin.

I just read a little bit about wildlife , hunting and gun ownership in Bangladesh. Unfortunately you don't find very much about the topic , and nothing when it comes to foreigners. I don't think that hunting and gun ownership is so easy for foreign hunters. The country does not appear to be completely safe and the districts on the east side of Chittagong are closed.

@Captain Nwz ,@Major Khan or @Kawshik Rahman can give us probably better informations.

Kurpfalzjager , here is a good summary that l have prepared. I hope that you will find it helpful.

I would not expect anyone to find much information about Bangladesh on the internet . It is a third world country after all . Political parties are too busy trying to overthrow each other to commercialize hunting and fishing . Fortunately , neither political party has any agendas against hunting nor do they intend to have any , so ( hopefully ) PETA and those other animal prioritizing hooligans will never bother our country.
Foreign Hunters who come to hunt in Bangladesh , typically know someone in Bangladesh who also hunts . If you do not personally know anyone who hunts in Bangladesh , then it becomes rather difficult for a foreign hunter to hunt in Bangladesh.

mark-hunter, l can give you the most current rates this March , if it will be of help to you. In March , Kawshik , Poton , myself and many members of our friend circle will be going to hunt our first Chital Deer for this year. When we take permission from the DC of the police station , l will collect a quotation . Would that be of assistance to you ?

@Captain Nwz

Thank's for the information , ...but in which area there is hunting nowadays , sambar deer for example ? The districts on the east side of Chittagong are said to be closed.
Kurpfalzjager , Sambhar Deer are the largest species of deer found in Bangladesh . You will typically only find them in the Southern part of country , like the Barishal division . In Chittagong , you will only find Barking Deer . The areas on the furthest corners of the Eastern side of Chittagong are temporarily closed down , as it is a temporary refugee camp for the Burmese Rohingya people until they can return to their own country ( Myanmar).

Yes, Sir!
Thank you very much!

Hunting Indian Crocodile using a 22LR, with a brain shot to the back of the skull and that too on a Darjeeling tea estate. Wow.
