The 47-70 has not, and never will, be a 458 win mag

I took a Bakail double rifle 45-70 opened up to 45-90 over for my safari operator. Technically I owned it but only briefly. Never shot the thing. Also had a couple boxes of brass and 45-90 dies in my checked bag for him. On the plane I did some research and found that yes, many others had opened those guns up. But everyone cautioned that 45-90 should not be loaded above 45-70 max pressure in those guns. So what is the advantage? Very little apparently. A bit more range which presumably translates to more velocity per unit of pressure which presumably also means slightly more penetration at close range? Given the difficulty finding 45-90 brass I don't think the slight advantage outweighed the disadvantages. I presume one could still shoot 45-70 in it? But with that kind of jump to lands probably not very effectively.

I get particularly interested in the the shot placement comments in relation to a marginal cartridge for the application. Since when is it a good idea to hang your hat on something that in many cases you have no control over.

And neither will ever be a 500 Jeffery or a 505 Gibbs which is the minimum caliber for rabbits here.

Don’t know that I would post about taking it over there on an open forum…

All the paperwork was done for permanent export. It was a legal transfer ... as far as I know. Duty was paid. No problems arriving or leaving. However, I understand getting it licensed on that end has been a headache ... but that seems to be usual for all license applications. Can take years.

Lott wrote a story about one incident (near-fatal) that involved some allegedly dodgy ammunition in the 458 Win Mag, don't know if the hunter-death rate is excessive using the 458WM over other calibres.

I can tell you from personal experience that hunting buff on foot with a 375H&H can lead to some exciting times as well, and that is a tried and tested buff calibre according to most.

I have this notion that when I'm hunting Buffalo in Africa I'm bringing a "African Rifle" Bolt or Double .40 Cal or better, Express Sights and get within 50 yards..
If and when I hunt American Bison it will be with an "American Rifle" probably a Sharps 45-70 or better, Vernier Sights, and shooting off of Cross Sticks perhaps a Black Powder Load with a Paper Patch Cast Bullet
But then again that is me
