Taxidermy shield project started

So what does everything think of the zebra hide on the shield. Who likes it with or with out the hide on the shield.

Bill,
I like the zebra. I see someone mentioned something about giraffe hide. Not sure if it would be too gaudy but wondering how it would look with giraffe above and below the zebra stripe?

Bill I love it with the zebra hide on it.

Cool! Ever since I browsed I believe it was the Highveld taxidermy site and saw these, I have wanted to do some mounts on a shield. The problem is they want a ridiculous amount of money to buy them outright without getting taxidermy work done there, and also I'm no woodworker. Hope to figure out how to get one someday. Best of luck in your venture!

Funny you posted that. I did just that after my post earlier. Find em anywhere from $60- $900 depending on quality authenticity and/or if the person just wants to get rid of gramps old stuff

Once I get this one done I will have a better idea what I can make one for. Just maybe a good way for me to make some extra cash for the next trip. The first is always the toughest till I get all the bugs worked out. I already know some things that will make the next one go faster for sure.

Can I place an order;)

I like your creativity!

Well I started the finishing the shield and got the stain on. Next some coats of clear to finish it up. Not sure if I like the zebra hide with the stain color or not. May try some other hides or just leave the hide off.

Who likes the zebra on the stain color?

I like it bill.

I like the zebra (leopard would be very nice too).

I like the "idea" of hide in the stripe. I just don't like how this one turned out. With it being a Burchell's zebra, there is the ghost stripe that makes it look busy and clouds the distinct contrast one would expect. If it were skin from up near the front legs, I think it would look a lot better. I also agree that leopard (or cheetah) or anything else with a smaller pattern would look good. Maybe even civet although it doesn't scream Africa like zebra and leopard does. Giraffe would look awesome except that the pattern is too big to be recognized. That is my $0.02 of input.

Also, much of the skin on there will be covered with an animal skull, won't it? I wonder if that would be confusing to have zebra skin and then an antelope skull. A young female kudu skin with the light tan coat and brighter white stripes might look good when paired with a kudu skull but then one would probably expect the skin and the skull to be from the same animal? I don't know. Just things to think about.

I agree with @mrpoindexter. I liked the zebra hide with the raw wood, but not with the stain. Something darker, without pattern might look good.

I like it bill.

Bill, I like the Zebra skin. It may be better with a darker stain. I think it looks good though as is.
