Tanzania revokes tourist hunting permits issued in 2017

I thought Tanzania puts hunting blocks up for bid every 5 years?

Man, I am scheduled to be in Western TZ with Danny Macallum Safaris next August September for a massive safari that I have been planning for a long time.
?

Did Danny sell out his hunting operation to another outfitter? Maybe TBGS.

Hope all goes great on your hunt. Look forward to reading all about it.

I believe your right, although I don't know the year they come up for renewal off hand. The last time around I believe they gave preference to native Tanzanian's that didn't have the wherewithal to operate or market the areas. Many of the concessions were turned back into the government or abandoned.

I believe some long standing outfitters lost some concessions in bid year of 2011/12. There were some upset people, because of the claims of backroom deals, and palm greasing going on? I don't know the details. Just speculation over some articles, and complaints that were written?

I have a buffalo and plains game hunt planned for the first week of July in the Rungwa area. I just purchased a double rifle in 450-400, that gets delivered tomorrow. I really hope this gets smoothed out quickly!

Glad we enjoyed it while we could.

What a mess. Is there any good news coming out of Africa? Namibia, Tanzania, Closing leopard hunts in SA.. I m afraid to ask what's next?

Civil war in Zimbabwe after Mugabe, that's what's next.

Saw an interesting listing in the new SCI paper today. Its a donation hunt to TZ. 7 day buffalo hunt in the Selous. Not included in the donated hunt are Trophy fees,, hunt expenses?, firearm permits $350., concession fee/license/permit $8000, air charter $4000 each way!, dip and pack $950, shipping of trophies and gratuities. So for this "donated" hunt, one can expect to add thousands in trophy fees, 8 grand in concession fees, another 8 grand in air charter and nearly a grand for dip and pack and then the rest. Not to mention your airfare to get there, hotels etc. Wow, such a deal! Hard to imagine why any pencil neck bureaucrat would want to get in the way of this money making operation.

No,Grace (his wife) will continue the tradition of a wise governance :(
Nearby, last year, the woman who was leading the youth organisation of Mugabes ZANU PF, died by an "traffic accident".
Grace ,so far without a political function ,took over the organisation. What a coincidence.

A new minister means always: redistributes the bribes again.
In Zambia it was the same ,the ministress (in 2013 or so) closed lion hunting at once, when she gets in power.
Few month later, the hunting costs was going up from USD 60'.- to 100.-'
I would say, a classical return of investment by the safari operators.

The corruption is the greatest misfortune for this continent,it survives solely through the development aid of the West.
Even in 50 years, nothing will change at all.
Carpe diem for hunting.

Even if we all scold Mugabe, but no country there is as good as Zimbabwe in terms of hunting legislation and its discipline.
We should not ignore that.
I'm afraid we're gonna cry over himo_O

Foxi, you're probably right. Sometimes one just has to make a deal with the devil like the U.S. and other countries have done pouring in BILLIONS to keep Mugabe in power.

I wont. The amount of damage caused to that country and its peoples both black and white, during his reign of terror is incalculable. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest his coffin forever!

It would be nice to hear from one of the AH sponsors that operate in Tanz, what is their take on this new scheme the government is dreaming up.

Hi AH Members

Though members and potential clients concerns are much appreciated, you obviously noticed that not much has been reported from the industry side and therefore it has to be clear that we are just sharing a personal opinion and can not be regarded by any means as an official statement of any sort.

The issue at hand is obviously surprising but also believed to be resolvable as officials in Tanzania has proven numerous times in the past that they are open for discussion and finding solutions for the benefit of Tanzania's resources, conservation and protecting the industry that funds most of the conservation efforts in the country.

We recommend everybody to stay calm whilst our organizations are at work in negotiating a better outcome for the benefit of all interested parties. One thing can be said: Tanzanians due value and appreciate their wildlife therefore this matter ought to be handled with urgency.

Thank you.

Here's hoping!

Any new news on this?
I'm getting kind of antsy !

The 60 day ultimatum stated in a previous press release to devise a plan for auctioning off the blocks is up on December 24th.

Good news!

DSC Gets Results For Tanzania Safari Industry
Just in time for convention, Tanzania safari operators and hunters get good news from ministry officials.

With DSC’s convention just days away, outfitters from Tanzania were concerned that the proposed cancellation and auction of hunting blocks in their country would result in customers being reluctant to book hunting trips in 2018, due to the uncertainty created.

DSC’s President Craig Nyhus and Executive Director Corey Mason wrote to Tanzania’s Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, the Hon. Hamisi Kigwangalla, on Dec. 22, requesting that the pending auction process, originally scheduled for early 2018, not impact hunts already scheduled, or to be scheduled in 2018. They indicated in the statement that postponement would maximize hunting tourism dollars while the hunting block auction process is being planned.

As a response to DSC’s request, a meeting was held on Dec. 28 in Tanzania. The Minister announced that existing leaseholders will be protected in 2018, and hunts in Tanzania may be booked and taken, including hunts already book in past years and scheduled for 2018.

Nyhus said, “DSC supports the President’s plan for a qualified and transparent auction process to safeguard Tanzania’s wildlife heritage and promote sustainable use tourism.” He continued, “We are grateful to the Honorable Minister, Permanent Secretary, Director of Wildlife and their team in the Tanzania Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism for taking this quick and decisive action. With just days to go for the kickoff of the hunting industry’s convention season, the current Tanzanian outfitters will be able to conduct business without fear of losing their ability to honor their customers’ trips.”
