Suitcase or duffle bag?

THREAD HIJACKING IN PROGRESS

This is off of the United website (I bolded and underlined the key sentence). This is news to me, as I always packed it separate. From a weight management standpoint, it might make sense to put the ammo in the gun case and take it right up to the 50 lb limit.

  • Firearms must be packed in a hard-sided container with a lock. The container must be locked at the time of acceptance by United Airlines and the key or combination must remain in the customer's possession. If a hard-sided container is needed, see the container section of this site.
  • Handguns must be packed in a hard-sided container with a lock. The container must be locked at the time of acceptance by United Airlines and the key or combination must remain in the customer’s possession. The locked hard-sized container holding the handgun may be placed inside an unlocked soft-side piece of luggage.
  • The firearm will be transported in a section of the aircraft that is inaccessible to the customer. Proof of registration is not required.
  • Firearms carried in addition to the free baggage allowance will be assessed at the current excess baggage charge.
  • No more than 11 pounds of ammunition may be carried. The ammunition may be packed in the same container as the firearm or in a separate container. Ammunition must be packed in the manufacturer's original package or securely packed in fiber, wood or metal containers. The ammunition inside the container must be protected against shock and secured against movement.

This is from the Delta Website:

I found the application of the ammo laws to be inconsistent in the RSA. I flew in with ammo in a locked Pelican case in a checked bag. I flew on to East London the same way. Ditto on the way back to Johannesburg. Then as we were leaving, I had to separately check my Pelican 1150.

Also somewhat annoying was the incessant checking of the rifle. On arrival in Joburg. On flying to East London. On arriving in East London. On leaving East London. On arrival in Joburg. On leaving Joburg.

Add in leaving and arriving in Calgary, that is 8 times. Personally you would think that they could put a seal on the case and reduce the RSA checks by a third to a half. Maybe it is solely to create work for the police at the airport.

I am going to the Yukon in August for a Dall Sheep hunt. Just checked Air Canada's website and found this: Totally opposite of others. Actually, it makes more sense to me packing the ammo and rifle in separate containers.

Can anyone comment on the locking device requirement? Trigger lock is straight forward. How about bolt removed and a lock thru the action. How about just locking the gun case, or does that not count?

AIR CANADA
Packing instructions

The firearm and the ammunition must NOT be packed in the same container. One declaration form must be completed for each container.

All firearms:

  • Must be unloaded:
    • When checking in a firearm, you must sign a declaration form attesting that the firearm is not loaded.
  • Must be rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device mechanism (i.e. a trigger lock), but only after the check-in process has been completed;
  • Must be packaged and locked in a specially designed, non-transparent case that cannot be easily broken into during transport.

When leaving SA the ticket agent said it was great because thieves couldn't break into it ;). Thieves can get into anything but being lazy will go for the easiest target. I laugh at hard side luggage with a zipper, all it takes is a pen and the zipper opens.

I had all of my electronics and optics wrapped in my under amour camo in the carry-on so I could care less about what happened to the dirty underwear and muddy boots that were in my checked baggage :-)!

I would have the bolt removed, whether I used a trigger lock, or if I used a cable lock through the action which would be fine.
