Spring bears anyone?

I was supposed to go up to Alaska for a spring bear this year but due to so much chaos in the system I opted to save as much money as I can. Besides I have a crate coming back from RSA sometime this year and I took a great bear on my last trip in 2022.

Great bear. Location was AK?

It won’t be until September but I’ll have a black bear tag in my pocket when I am in Alaska in my goat hunt.

Supposed to be some good bears in the area, if they aren’t all hibernating by the time my hunt gets here.

Cool...I lived in AK for a long time and worked all over, including SE. What area was that?

Prince William sound. Out of Whittier. My buddy lives in Sutton. Works on the slope so we try to get together once in awhile. So I went up there and hunted with him in ‘22. I’ll probably go back next spring if it all works out.

Yea man, it looked like PWS but could be a number of places. Excellent country.

I'm prepping for a return to Saskatchewan in 2 weeks. I took an awesome 7+ foot cinnamon last year that was written up here. The camp just took this bear that was 20 13/16" and 504 lbs...truly a great bear anywhere, anytime.

Who is going after bears this spring?

I just finished reading your report from last year. I haven’t done a baited bear hunt yet myself. What’s the draw to doing this hunt year after year? Is it the camp atmosphere? Do you get to participate in beaver trapping for bait or do some fishing before the afternoon hunts that makes it a more rounded out experience? I wouldn’t think another bear rug or the meat would be much of a draw to go again?

The main reason I have done repeated bear hunts is that I like to study the bears to learn more about their behavior. Bait sites tend to provide a lot of activity while I can sit quietly and observe. My 3 favorite species to repeat and observe are turkeys, elephants and bears.

I generally move around more year to year but this is a repeat location to get 3 of my friends in front of good bears. We booked half of the camp. I tend to see a lot of old bears at this camp.

Just got back from northwest montana. Saw 2 really nice bears i coulnd't get to in that jungle before it got dark. Saw way more people that have fled the hound units this year

Likely missing the spring season taking kiddo for her first trip across the pond. Not totally unfamiliar with spring bears though. Little self-guided fun when we had free run of a bud’s place when covid closed the guid season.

Little size comparison between a B&C coastal brownie and interior. The brown bear had some kind of bone infection going on likely from his dental injuries (not uncommon with brown bears) but the old interior sow was totally calcified over, not a single noticeable old fused growth line anywhere, and her molars were gone, leaving just worn down roots.

Headed back to Montana in 2 weeks for our annual bear camp. It's always a good time and we usually do pretty good. Spring bear camp is great. Sleeping and fishing in the morning, bear hunting the afternoon's and evening's.

I’m headed to New Brunswick in a few weeks for the second time. Looking for a mature boar.

I would like to see New Brunswick sometime and the various other provinces. Do you tend to see any moose in NB while bear hunting?

Hello - I was looking at your post from several years ago regarding the Winchester 300 H&H. Any chance you still have the lefty M70 300 H&H for sale?
Thank you, Mike

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
