One needs a temporary firearm export permit in order to take a gun to a place outside South Africa. I have applied for a permit end of January - the permit is still not with me. The local DFO informed me today "Your applications has been sent to CFR and has not been approved yet.”

The buffalo hunt is booked for beginning of May, I very much doubt whether I shall receive the permit in time, which would mean cancellation of the hunt.

I’m extremely frustrated and disappointed. What are your experiences with SAPS in connection with such permit? Of course this applies to South Africans only.

Of course there is. However I shoot left and want to use my double…
Just wondered.. Maybe a left hand rifle could be found somewhere with the help of your outfitter? I would try just about anything before I canceled a hunt over it. Hunting one of the APNRs would be great

Not much can’t be negotiated with some $$$, I bet they would find your permit pretty quick.

CFR have made things so complicated and long winded , I think it is in part to stop corruption but could also just be the anti gun agenda.
In any civilised country this process could take 2-3 weeks max.

Like they somehow lost the part that makes me a collector, never mind the 60 firearms licesed as such.
Now I wait for this to be re-instated and licenses are piling up waiting to be submitted.

I have done the temp export paperwork a good couple of time for Namibia here in Cape Town.
I filled in the paperwork, went to my DFO and they did the temp permit right there and then. Never needed to be sent anywhere. Try another DFO if that is possible.
Unless things have changed since last time I have done this??

That has changed some years ago. Now the application forms MUST go to Pretoria. The waiting period for the permit is THREE MONTHS! In the past it was 14 days, which was changed without announcement to one month. Now it’s three months… Lazy pupholes!!!

Today I contacted a well-known attorney: Martin Hood. Hopefully he is able/willing to assist.

I called my gunsmith who travels often to Namibia with guns. He said nothing has changed.
I don't know

From SAPS DFO:

"
RE: application form for an temporary export can be down loaded from the SAPS web site www.saps.gov.za

Down load the form SAPS520 and complete.

Application must be handed in at our office at least 3 months before departure date.

The following documents must be attached

SAPS520
Copy if ID
Copy if firearm licence
Copy of invitation to hunt

Kind regards"

So sad how thins just get more difficult for us

I applied on January 31. SAPS DFO mail from today:

“Your application was sent timelessly in time to our Provincial office.

I understand but this office has no control over CFR when they will issue it.

Kind regards”

Which most likely means that I won’t hunt buffalo in Zimbabwe at all. It would be the fourth time in a row that I have to cancel the hunt
1.
No firearm permit in time
2.
Strike of SAA, no other airline was prepared to take my rifle along
3.
Corona
4.
Will see…

Should I ever book a hunt outside SA again, then I would arrive as an international tourist from Germany or Switzerland. As it seems, South Africans are not able hunting beyond the border anymore. Unless they apply for a permit one year or even longer in advance. SAPS really sucks.

When they eventually issue it how long is it valid for?

I guess for the period absent from SA. One has to fill in the dates of leaving SA to returning to SA. Where are you based if I may ask? I’m just curious ‘cause I like your postings.

Cash and alcohol seem to get many bureaucrats excited worldwide!

I am thinking that the proper forms and stamps would magically show up overnight for a fat stack of Mandelas and a 12 bottle case of Van Der Hum Liqeur.

Just my thought…

Put RiflePermits.com to the test and see if they can assist! LOL 'Used 'em once but it's simply not required for US citizens traveling through Africa. Fill out your forms, pay your fees and be nice. So strange an RSA citizen is running into such trouble. Your PH may be able to assist at the crossing(s), too.

What a f..king mess. and to think it is a South African citizen having to deal with this crap.

The CFR has gone from terrible to barely functional. I applied for a new licence for a Glock in August last year and it has only just been approved now in April. I am expecting another 3 months of waiting for the licence card to be printed.

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
