SOUTH AFRICA: Well We Are Here At Hartzview Hunting Safaris

Yes, the wife loves to hunt. It's embarrassing when you get someplace and she shoots better than you. I have missed three times and she has not missed any. We are having a great time. Thanks for all the responses, love reading your comments. We only have Kudu left to get with a day and a half left to hunt. On lunch break now, then back to hunting.

We finally made it home last night about 8:30pm after flight delays and some baggage issues. Got to catch up on a couple things today, I will start a report tonight. Needless to say it was a great trip.

First let me say I am not a writer so bear with me. After flights, delays, connections, etc., we arrived in Kimberley. Ruan met us and off to the ranch we go. We made the usual introductions, got checked in and shot all the guns. The guys liked Tammy's Smith & Wesson 500. Ruan told her that he would get her on an animal with it before we were through. So, now we load up on the bakkie for our first hunt in the African bush. We were very excited to finally be hunting in Africa after the long wait.
After riding for a while, some zebra and blesbok were spotted. Ruan asked which one I wanted to try, so I said, let's go for blesbok.
Off we go on the stalk. We got close to some blesbok and started glassing for a good ram. While we are waiting for them to raise their heads from the tall brown grass so we can see their horns, we hear a slight rustling in the bush to our left.
As we all stand very still, the rustling gets louder and closer and we start to hear running hoofbeats. We stand frozen waiting to see what the heck is coming our way, when suddenly, not 12 or 14 yards away a herd of blesbok burst out of the bushes and run right past as we stand and watch, amazed. After the stampede, we all laughed and said ok that was funny and exciting. We start back and some of the blesbok are about 200 yards away. After looking them over, Ruan and Esok say there is a good ram. I get on the sticks and wait for him to clear and boom, I miss him clean. Chalk it up to nerves and excitement on getting my first African animal in my crosshairs.

Day 2: First full day. Had a good day, saw a lot of animals and had some great stalks. While walking through the bush on the way to a waterhole we had an aardwolf run off in front of us. That was kind of cool. In the morning, after a long stalk on a herd of springbok, I got a 200 yard shot on a nice ram. Guess what, I missed again. Apparently when I click the safety off it also shuts down my brain. So after lunch it's Tammy's turn. Later in the afternoon, Ruan and Esok get her set up with a shot on a springbok ram at 145 yards. First shot, clean miss. He just stands there, second shot, dead springbok.

Misses and then DRT, dang that's insult to injury!

No kidding Phil. The guys could not believe that I let Tammy shoot and get the first kill, but after missing twice I thought it only fair to let her shoot. It was fun seeing her excitement in getting her first African animal. Next morning it was back to my turn. We started climbing a large rock hill to glass from the top. As we got near the top, I was winded and my legs were burning. Ruan saw that I was falling too far behind so he called for a rest stop. This turned out to be a good thing for sure. When we got to the top, Esok eased up to peek over to make sure nothing was close enough to spook. He quickly put up the sticks and motioned me forward. As I got up where I could see and get on the sticks, there on the side of the hill about 80 yards away is this zebra stallion standing broadside without a clue we were there. I shot him on the shoulder and he dropped straight down. Then he started trying to raise his head up and Ruan says hit him again, so I obliged and that was that. If you zoom in on the first picture you can see where he was when I shot. The second picture is just as he fell. My first African trophy!

Congrats on the springbok and zebra! Look forward to more

Been busy catching up on stuff around the house.
After loading the zebra, we go back for lunch, a nap and then we're off again in search of whatever shows up next. Turns out to be a Red Hartebeeste. After a good stalk, Ruan and Esok get Tammy on the sticks, and at 145 yards she makes a perfect behind the shoulder shot on a nice bull. He ran about 10 yards and piled up.

My turn again. After some riding and looking at a lot of animals, we came around close to one of the waterholes, so off the truck to sneak up behind the dam. there are animals there but mostly too young. Off to the right, Esok and Ruan spot a good Blesbuck ram. Esok shortened the sticks and set them up so I can sit and shoot under a limb of the tree we are hiding behind. Still too high to see under a branch, so I lay down prone and lay my rifle on a root. Just as I get him into the scope, the ram starts to walk, headed towards a bush. I didn't have the stock pulled into my shoulder good yet, and when I shot, That 300 win mag got me reacquainted with the eyepiece of my Leupold scope. The Blesbok went down and we were both bleeding. Have not done that in a lot of years.

This was one of the easiest recoveries yet. This ram fell right beside the road.
The next hunt had some funny moments, but I don't have time to put it all down now, so I will do that report tonight.

Great to see your excitement.

Ouch! But you got him! Now you've just added a little more "character" to your face.:D

Don't leave us hanging too long! I'm really enjoying this!

Next morning after the usual great breakfast prepared by Herbert and some coffee, we load up into the bakkie and head out. We see a lot of game but nothing big enough or close enough or the right gender. We park at the bottom of a big koppie and climb to the top to have a look. Across a little valley, there is another hillside facing us about 250 yards away. There are a lot of animals on the hill catching the morning sun, kudu, gemsbok, impala, and others. Ruan is concentrating on a big kudu bull standing in the shadows behind some bush. We can only see his head and horns but that is enough to get anyone's attention! Ruan, Esok and Tammy start easing down the hill to get closer and I stayed behind above them for less chance of being seen. I sat down on a rock in the shade of a big bush and got comfortable watching and waiting for the kudu to move out so Tammy can get a shot. Of course, everything on the hill and probably in South Africa is moving around except that kudu. Nope, he ain't coming out.

All of a sudden, I hear something running up the towards me. Then I see two warthogs coming at full speed and they are passing about 5 yards to the left of me. They never saw me, but there is a third one coming just to my right. I see it come out of the bush and it goes around a little bush just in front of me. As he comes around the bush we are face to face at about 5 feet. We make eye contact and he swerves and shifts into overdrive. He was hauling ass probably wondering what he just saw. I was sitting there laughing when I hear something running up behind me. I turned around to see some springbok and a bunch of blesbok go trotting by about 15 Yards behind me and down towards where Tammy and the guys headed. I'm not sure where they are as I can't see them. Suddenly. the blesbok all stop, stand still a moment and then reverse direction and tear out back the way they came like their tails were on fire. By now I'm wondering what can happen next.

I don't know how much more character this old face can stand. lol

Okay, that was fun, now back to hunting. Where is the kudu? Yep, Still hiding. All this time there have been three gemsbok bulls up the hill to the right. I'm thinking, forget the kudu, just shoot a gemsbok when, bam goes Tammy's .308. The closest bull acts hit but doesn't go anywhere, then bam, another shot. Now he turns and starts to run and bam, another shot and he takes off through the bush down the hill. I know all three shots were hits, because I heard that smack that we all love to hear.
Now to find the gemsbok, Ruan has Skitter bring the bakkie and the dogs,Tyson and Leica and put them on the trail. After a short tracking job, the dogs are barking, they have him bayed up. We get there and a shot in the neck ends it.

Now I get the rest of the story as Paul Harvey used to say. Tammy, Ruan and Esok were sitting and watching the kudu and other animals when Ruan whispers to Tammy to look over her shoulder. Behind them about 20 or 30 ft away, three warthogs are standing there looking at them. The hogs took off up the hill which is when they came by me. We figured the warthogs spooked the springbok and blesbok, then they came by me. Tammy and the guys are still sitting when a springbok comes out of the bush about 10 yds away and stands there looking at them. Then another one. Then they spook and go back the way they came, which is back by me again. Crazy morning in the African bush. We are still laughing about it.

As a general rule I'm a big believer that everything else being equal women are better shots. They don't get all hyped up like men do, and that makes them stone cold killers.

Glad y'all had fun and hope to hear about it in person at AH dinner in Dallas!

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
