SOUTH AFRICA: Surviving A Lion Charge Lion In The Kalahari!!!

Congratulations on a successful hunt and looking forward to seeing the video.

Congratulations! Nice looking Lion! I have hunted with Justin (African Sun Safari) several times and last year for a Lioness and a Lion and he is a superb host. He is the kind of guy that will go the extra mile!!

Congrats @Rare Breed, that is one fine looking lion. I can't wait to see the charge, I'm sure this will be your most exciting and unforgettable hunt of your life. Looking forward to the video.

BTW, the Gemsbok on my avatar was a female as well.

I had two great weeks in Zim with Dalton & York! While my three friends then went home I stayed to hunt a male lion with @Africa Sun Safari in The kalahara desert. I did extensive research and decided to hunt my lion on 22,000 acres with the lion being there for four weeks prior to the hunt…no one week lion on 1,000 acres. The hunt was nothing short of outstanding!!! Justin and his team simply outdid themselves with incredible service and accomidations!!! Adrian his PH that also hunted with me was outstanding as well! The food and sites were out of this world!!! Now on to the hunt

We had tracked this male lion for some time when we finally caught his tracks and caught up to him resting in the short Jess resting. We got within 52 yards with the wind and thorn bush in our favor!!! I had my 470 NE DR on the sticks hoping he would stand up…but with the wind starting to shift and my having a clear Target I took the shot. On autopsi we found my initial shot went through his ear and through both lungs providing a dead cat…someone forgot to send the memo however telling the lion it was dead…it got up and charged me. It stopped at 20 yards as the first shot took its toll…I shot high though on my second shot. The lion then made its final charge giving us time to reload dropping him at 7 yards!!! I thought my heart would come out of my chest!!! You can hear me on the attached video thanking my PH in case I missed on my last shot!!!

I cannot recommend African Sun Safari more!!! First class PH’s and accomidations all the way!!!

To be clear, my PH actually made the final shot given I could not reload in time. I had reloaded and had just gotten my sights back on him when my PH fired at 7 yards which was the absolute right thing to do given he was too close. The lesson learned for me is I practiced everything except speed on reloading…when you see the video you will see what I mean. I have asked Vertigo to help me post the video given I think it is a great teaching tool and I was able to send it to him on what’s app but could not get it to post on our site.

Great job closing the deal on a wonderful cat!

Nice lion and nobody got hurt, Success!! Not seeing the "crappy" comments? Maybe they got excised before I found this thread?

Looks like for a video, I cannot do a drag and drop into the AH forum. I believe I'll need to do an upload to Youtube, and then provide the link here?
@BRICKBURN : or do you know of another way of attaching a video?

cheers,

V.

Still cannot get the video to load
@VertigoBE videos cannot be upload directly into a post. The way to do it is to upload and host your video on YouTube and then embed the code into your post on AH.

Everyone please forgive my video upload skills which are non existent. I have asked @VertigoBE to help me given I had no problem sending to him on WhatsApp.
To be clear, my purpose is not to boast, I could have just left me over the animal like the one I posted. Instead I think it is a great learning video for the following reasons:
1. Don’t underestimate these animals…when you see the video you will see no slam dunk easy hunt
2. @Hunter-Habib provides great learning in that I used Barnes TSX at only 2052 FPS the shot went through its right ear then through both lungs with very little expansion which explains how this 378 pounds lion got up and charged.
3. On hindsight, I should have waited until the lion stood up
4. Last but not least I should have practiced much more on fast reloading which I practiced everything but that

Let’s see if this works:
@Rare Breed this is an non public video, you cannot search for it, only by using this link can you watch it.

I'd say that reloading practice is rather important.
Glad you got some assistance in posting the video.

Thank you for the video. It is a very good teaching tool.

I bet by this time next year your double reloading skills will make Doc Holiday look like a slow poke.
And the question (for me) is do you practice loading just one - with 100% reliability, obviously - or two?

With a double I have always practiced loading both barrels. My ammo carrier is made so that two rounds are seperated from the next two round group, the two rounds fit between the three middle fingers of the hand and are positioned to pull and drop into the chambers. Before going on a DG hunt I practice this over and over with snap caps till I can do it in the dark.

With a ruger #1 Start with two between the fingers, and as you are at the zenith of the recoil pulse you are already pulling the action lever down and round in the chamber in a fluid motion. When I practiced that operation I could shoot 3 rounds quicker from a number 1 than I could from a bolt gun. However I have done that practice in a number of years and would be very rusty. But with work and good hand eye coordination it can be done.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
