SOUTH AFRICA: Elephant Hunt With Paw Print Safaris 2015

state of the art!!!!!i have my hornady bullet also.beautiful.

calling the Hornady DGS bullet "state of the art" is a bit much. its the same kind of bullet as the Woodleigh FMJ which is pretty much the same bullet that has been used on elephant for the last 120+ years. steel jacketed bullets have proved they will work effectively on elephant as long as the angle isn't too extreme.

CAustin, are you able to import this ivory?

Matt this is a fully importable bull!

what exactly was my "opinion"? that steel jacketed bullets work on elephants? i was just saying they weren't "state of the art", if i was mistaken and you were talking about the animal kill then i apologize.

@CAustin that's outstanding, your trophy room will be the envy of hunters everywhere!

Hornady DGS retained almost all it's weight and is just slightly distorted. It went into the bulls right side of the head three inches in front of the ear hole. It was recovered just under the skin on the left side.

Now that's what I call a good bullet!!!!
Glad you got good performance Charlie. I was worried after the problems Gizmo had.

Congratz! All the prep time and work paid off:) Has your son been successful on his hunt?

Charlie, congratulations on a successful hunt and the realization of a very special and personal hunting accomplishment!

Enjoy the rest of your time here in SA!

Congrats, great job Charlie!!!!!

Well folks today is Monday and. Mike smith from Capricorn Taxidermy came to collect the elephant trophy. By this posting he should be half way back to Polokwane. It is a good feeling to have the tusks in his hands so that he can begin the cleaning and export process! Lots of skin to be made I to leather. I kept the tail and ears as well as the feet. One big front leg bone will look great on my office self!
Thanks to Mike for making the drive.

Getting a giraffe is proving to be very difficult! Bryson has taken a couple of shots but no hit yet! We try again in the morning!

Charlie,

Glad to hear your elephant is being processed, now all you need is patients. Enjoy the rest of your trip and good luck to Bryson on his Giraffe hunt.

Mike

I'm very happy to see that you got your elephant. One of these days we'll have to get together again at your place to view all of your photos of this hunt and see how this trophy sits with the others you've taken.

Charlie, congratulations old bean - that is outstanding to say the least.

Marious I'm looking forward to meeting you as well.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
