South Africa Cape Buffalo Hunts

JTEX, what safari company did you use for your greater Kruger hunts? Thanks.

All my South Africa Dangerous game hunts have been with Johan Hermann Safaris, great young man.

Would you mind explaining a little more what a greater Kruger hunt is? I'm sure most on here know and I had a brief conversation with my PH about hunting buff near Kruger when I return to SA. I expect this may be what he was referring to.

Sure, basically they are an area open to Kruger.......

Kruger park has the remnants of a fence around it. Some villages, some land owners have basically sorta donated the land to expand the boundaries of the park and then the fence is moved to include the "donated" land. Places like the Klasserie, Timbivati, Umbabat, Makuya....etc.. are all privately owned, not gov't concessions, but as a benifit of providing off take of Krugers excess animals Kruger determines quota.

Some are owned by individuals, some are owned by "villages"......... there are no "Government Concessions" in South Africa.

There are more "agencies" involved than just Kruger but that is the gist of it. I don't really understand all the machinations of it. But I hope I covered the gist "fairly well"...

You are NOT hunting IN the park, you are hunting areas that are OPEN to the park.

In my humble opinion it is an incredible way for Kruger to utilize excess animals, provide money for Park staffing, anti-poaching and giving value to the animals for the locals.........and a bunch of NYAMA!

Okay. Thank you. These are the same "Kruger" buffalo Paul was telling me about. I recall him saying the actual hunting of the buffalo is just as good an experience as in his Zim camp. That is- the buffal behave like buffalo are supposed to under whatever the circumstances are at the moment. He mentioned that the trophy quality could be excellent as well. The rest was a bit fuzzy as the conversation drifted through two or three of Lynchburg, Tennessee's finest sundowners. I very much appreciate you filling in the gaps. Tidbits like this are starting to shape themselves into an actual plan for my next hunt.

Glad to be of assistance, I've had a few of those types of conversations as well.

The Kruger buff have the same type of things to deal with as any wilderness area buff, lions, hyenas and recently a lot of poaching..........

Whatever you decide, have fun. I would Mich rather chase buffalo th a anything I can think of.....

.

I won't say Mozambique is better than Zimbabwe or SA, but to be standing on the ground and glassing over a 1000 buffalo as they feeding out on the plains, is just a mind blowing experience. I prefer hunting where the unknown is seen, want the challenge and excitement.

Yep! Not too common but I've seen that kind of thing at Umbabat. It is incredible!

Gotta make Moz one of these days, I think up North in the Miombo would be great, the swamps.....not so much....

Toby458, I just returned a couple of weeks ago from a buff hunt on the 10,000 acre property billc was talking about. My buffalo was 38" and fine hard bossed...my goal. I was very happy. You can read my report of it here on AH. I'm 70, but I am in the top 5-10% of 70 year olds for being in shape. It only took a day and a half to take my bull, but I had a full list for my 10 day hunt, so it worked out well. The first day as you can read was pretty tough making 3 stalks and waiting for them to clear the trees and brush until the swirling wind gave us away. The second morning turned out vastly easier and I took my fine bull.
I believe high fenced animals who are constantly hunted are likely to be more wary than those in wilderness areas...JMO and observations. I also don't believe there is any quality difference in the two.
That said, a true wilderness experience is very unique in itself. Checking prices, I believe it costs substantially more for a true wilderness experience. Again just my observed comparisons.
If you've never been to Africa, take my word for it it's like potato chips, you can't eat just one nor go just once.
What ever you decide on, I believe you will have a grand time! Best of luck in your decision!
Do you happen to have a link for your post of this hunt? I can't seem to find it. Thanks!

Toby, if you are looking for a Cape Buffalo hunt, please do not hesitate to drop me a PM or email.
I will be happy to explain the different options on Buffalo that are available out there as well as the pitfalls.

Take Care,
Marius Goosen

With a herd of over 35,000 buffalo, the Kruger (or one of the adjoining reserves) is one of the greatest places left on Earth to hunt cape buffalo. If Marius has quota in the Greater Kruger /APNR I'd consider booking that hunt with KMG, a well organized outfit that has a proven track record of delivering on their promises.

Thanks for the info!

There is nothing wrong with a South African buffalo, if done the correct way. In fact, even though our main business is dangerous game (including buffalo) in the Caprivi, we also offer buffalo in SA.
It is not the same experience as a "wild" buff hunt though, and mostly appeal to someone that wants an easier hunt, or a more luxurious camp/lodge or someone that is already hunting SA for some of the great variety of other game to be found there.

Here's a couple of examples of SA hunted buff:

Those are definitely some nice buffalo! Thanks for sharing.

South Africa definitely holds its own when it comes to Buffalo and Buffalo Hunting, a lot depends on location.
These are two great Bulls hunted in the thick Mopane forests.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
