SOUTH AFRICA: Cape Buffalo Hunt

Very well done and great choice of equipment.

I have the same Accupoint on my No 1 450/400 and put together my second iteration of test loads with the NF 400gr last night. :)

If I can execute like you did, on a bull anywhere near as cool as yours, I will consider myself very fortunate!

Congratulations great bosses on that old boy. Man would have loved to have seen a matching set on him. Well done.

I reckon the only improvement could have been a "left and right" in this case a "over and under" on the second bull which also looks like a bruiser.

1dirthawker's first shot killed that buffalo, perfect with full penetration to opposite side clearly breaking the off side shoulder. They don"t normally fall over so quick and death bellow while tumbling. Just shows what good shot placement and the right caliber can do. It also helps when you take the first shot and Mr Dagga boy has no idea you are there!

Great stuff all round!

thanks tarbe! i was very happy with the choice of caliber and its performance and i love the trijicon scope on top of it all. i'm sure if you put in some range time, you will do a fine job with your equipment. i would highly recommend practicing off of sticks tho. whether your buffalo gun or something else, it kind of gives you an idea of your skill and limits.

ivw,
you are right, the second bull was a pig, and that would have been great, unfortunately, my wallet was not up to stacking up cape buffalo. also agreed on sucker punching dangerous game. i was trying to squat, then step further left to get around the branch that was in the way of his vitals, figured i better just shoot before the bull noticed me, stood up and got all full of adrenaline.

bears are like that, sucker punch them and they die much easier, let them know you are there and running out, much tougher.

Gonna have to take you up on a bear hunt.
Partially for the bear, but also for the chance to shoot the o/u. ;)

Congrats on a great looking buff!

Fine shooting on that old bull, congratulations and thank you for sharing the video!

Looking at the Trijicon 1-4x or 1-6x for a new 416 ruger.

edge,

i believe you will like the trijicon. i got the 1-6 accupoint. i had a post sight, was very fast, but not very good on precise shooting, so ended up with the trijicon accupoint. works even in the dark and no batteries. a great choice for your 416 ruger. heck, i have heard they 416 ruger is around 6-700$ and wanna buy one and don't even need one!! ;)

Just finished reading the entire post. WOW what a great hunt with trophies to boot. I was most impressed by your 190 yd. shot with a double rifle. I didn't know those barrels stretched that far.

FABTASTIC hunt you guys had.. Well done in that huge broken Horn bull!!
I really like to see hunters opting for the non ordinary trophies as well.
You called it and fulfilled!!
GREAT STUFF...

What reticle did you end up with? I’ve read some reports the small dot in the plex, #4 and circle dot aren’t very bright on overcast days but the post with triangle is very bright.

I did end up buying one of the 416 Rugers!

edge,

nice on getting a ruger, I'm still considering one, and i do not need it!!

re: the trijicon, i got the circle cross. with my 450-400, figured i could use the circle as an aiminpoint on a farther shot. in overcast, the dot can be a bit faint. it is not lit with a battery. any light makes the dot brighter and it works in absolute dark. i wish it was a touch brighter sometimes but it never keeps me from being able to use the scope. i am not a fan of the triangle, to large for precise shooting in my opinion

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
