I was not complaining about the fact that it was a young nyala. I was put under pressure and refused for quite a while. The PH that I have had before would not have even allowed me to take a shot on this one. He was bashing Pieter for immature animals, yet he wanted me to take a crappy shot on an immature nyala was the point I was making. For clarification and generally a learning opportunity.
Pressure.
It is something that every hunter must be able to deal with.
If you are not comfortable, do not take the shot, no matter what.
Be able to say NO.
Regret, always after the fact, is something we all have to deal with after we pull the trigger on a trophy. As a sheep hunting buddy was fond of telling me: "The mistake was in shooting the first one."
Trophy expectation. Spending the time to know what you want by learning about trophy judging. It is the only way a hunter has the capacity to discuss options with the PH and ultimately the ability to say: NO, it's too bloody small, etc.
I just watched a Jim Shockey video on Youtube last night. He was hunting with Joffie Lamprecht for a Springbok in Namibia. Listening to Joffie repeatedly say "shoot it" with Jim asking the question, which one? by asking "the one facing right?"
You can imagine the potential screw up when watching a herd of Springbok. Everything has horns, high grass, moving animals, etc.
Sure as hell, Jim has learned to ask questions that identify "which one" before the trigger is ever pulled. Obviously, he has had much more opportunity to interact with PH's than the typical hunter. He still had to deal with the pressure of the repeated "shoot it" comments from his PH. I heard at least three in the edited version of the video.
I have just looked back on a few PH's I have worked with.
Dwayne- Not one word about shooting. Beyond: It's the one on the left after I asked a question.
Marius - Not one word about shooting. Cursing under his breath (for his own benefit) after I blew a stalk. Intentisty.
Simon - A simple sentence. "Not that one. The one on the left" in a very low even tone. Never an insistent shoot.
Augustinus - not a word. - His only comment: "No taxidermy" and only after I destroyed a Jackal.
Francois - The only insistent word came when I did not arrive in reply to a radio request to come when a Leopard was spotted. "You must come....." Oops, rookie mistake on my part.
Kemp - would HISS "shoot!!!" on many trophies we hunted together. I always took it like he was excited. His intensity is certainly something to behold (We are both competitive, so I get it). I could certainly see someone reacting to his tone as pressure. There was certainly no intention.
ps. Oh yeah, Pieter. He did not say shoot either. He just said, after the animal was down (paraphrase) " I'm glad I did not make that call". He didn't. It was my screw up on the trophy call. LOL
All in all, some PH's are more vocal and no matter whom you hunt with, you had better be able to say no.
...........He was bashing Pieter for immature animals, yet he wanted me to take a crappy shot on an immature nyala was the point I was making. ..........
I can't stop laughing!I thought I would offer this suggestion for anyone following this thread....
Read the thread.@Bestguide ,
You're making very, very serious accusations here, and at this point they are baseless. Why are they baseless? Because you won't provide the actual facts (if they exist - you've done nothing to convince anyone they do. And to be clear, I'm taking no position on whether they exist or not, simply that they haven't been provided). I'd suggest if you have proof that you provide it. If you aren't willing or are unable to provide the documented facts, then your credibility is completely shot and you should stop.
Because you see, without proof there is no reason anyone here should follow any suggestions that you make. Why should anyone be "willing to listen" to you when you won't do anything but accuse?
hahahahahahHaI thought I would offer this suggestion for anyone following this thread....
@Bestguide,
I'm not sure why you said with quotes, "well intentioned" regarding my previous post. However let me repeat to be certain, I did not make that post with the intention of attacking nor defending anyone involved in this hunt. It was written to politely give you my impression of how you're conducting yourself within the thread and the negative effects of that.
In your post above you asked me for my email to send to me your proof of now even more accusations of Pieter. If you looked in my signature you would have found it on your own. However, I'm asking you to NOT send me any email. This is not my monkey nor my circus, I have no desire to be involved further in this.
One more observation if you will suffer thru it. If you want to tag someone to get their attention to a post here on AH, you use the @ symbol followed by the member's moniker. You'll note that I tagged you. I did this by first typing @Best. About the moment the t was typed, your name popped up and then I clicked on it. Voila, you were now tagged in this post. I'd suggest you do this when you want to address @bowfishoholic versus how you start your post with "Lady." Whatever your intent may be, you come across demeaning, which does not serve you
Read the thread.
Inbox me what proof you require with your e-address. Describe the proof you require and you will have it.
Period
I'm
willing to back up my post.
Describe your required proof and i'll send it to you.
Did you actually read what i wrote?
Good god man.
Dumb comment.I read what you wrote. And I'm not looking for private proof. Want to back up the statements you made here to everyone? Do it here to everyone.
If you have the proof and you're willing to share it with anyone via email then post it here. It's pretty simple really.
UrrrrghhhhMistakes can happen with any business. How the mistakes are handled, shows the integrity of the company, and are part of any new business learning curve.
I have seen many hunt reports on Pawprint Safaris. Lots of great trophies, and happy hunters that had a great time with Pawprint. If my time comes to hunt SA, I would gladly book a hunt with Pawprint.

Erm.So both the client and Pieter lie! Really
