This report is exactly why I enjoy this site so much.

Great job hunting and writing bluey.

wayne and there was me thinking it was the uniform with all the gold braid and badges on it , and the power to keep us under control you liked so much!!! ;):LOL:. and bluey keep up the great writing (y)

Outstanding, I can't wait to hump the hills for my zebra!

Outstanding, I can't wait to hump the hills for my zebra!

mmmm love it when a word means one thing in english and another in american english or african english. "hump the hills" could take a long time and be painful but each to his own kink ;) . a friend i had doing a hunt in tanzania asked us how did you "whack" a hyaena.....the ph, his wife and i looked at each other laughed and said very carefully....took my friend a while to work out what we found so amusing :D

id whack a hyena , on sight , spikey .
make a great additition to the skull collection .

mmm bluey the way we used the word whack was not what you would want to be doing to a hyaena!! maybe the blonde surf chick on bondi beech, but not a hyaena .........;)

Bluey I just read your hunt report for the second time! Outstanding hunt sir and congrats to you. You will remember this fir the rest if your life for sure.

By the way the African Sky hotel you stayed in looks very nice. I have used the Lombardy on both visits because it is very close to the offices of the Outfitter. These places seem to be ready and willing to serve the hunting guest. Late dinner and early breakfast.

Glad you were able to save the day and finish off the misses zebra! Great report.

In the unit I was attached to, "humping" meant moving through terrain under load, i.e. weapon, ammo, gear, etc... I never thought about what others would think. Thanks for pointing that out, LOL!

after we loaded up the zebra, and headed to the butchery .
we had a long lunch and l hit the practice but for a while .while joysie sat in the sun , a whole lot happier now that her zebra was not hurting anymore , it really through her off balance wounding that mare .

then around 3pm l was getting a bit anxious , so went down and helped the skinners and with the salting of the skins .
they wouldn't let me do much . so went for a stroll around the 2 big dams her close to the houses , watching a few monkeys for a while till they disappeared once they knew I was there .
roy later said to take as many of these as l could next time.as they are very destructive .
about 4ish l went back and denessee ,asked if I wanted to go and see if we could get a duiker with the bow ,again .
never had to ask twice .

10 minutes later we dropping over the dam bank again , into the dry river/creek system .
we went the opposite way this time and soon were seeing springbok . we got into 44 metres and had a great ambush site ,with all these girls and young males ,there but nothing big enough .so we sat and watched them for a few minutes .before backing out ,and moving on , im totally surprised by the amount of porcupine holes here , and denesse said that there is many on here ,but you never see them during the day .

next time ,im here ,as we have already decided that we will be coming back and hunting with the wormalds again , there will be a porcupine or two on the list , that and a serval, as im told you can bring them back to Australia, as the next hunters after us are a father and son on a return trip to chikwere from down under ,and they have a serval permit ,and are told that they will be able to bring it home .
which is news to me as custom /border protestion told me that no spotted cats were permited into Australia .
l hope he gets his serval and brings it home they are a bueatiful animal ,and would look great on the wall .

a few minutes later we are stopped as a kudu bull silently appears 60 o0dd metres in front of us , he was too young to hunt but , we will sneak in and see if we can get in and out with out being busted .
at 40 metres we could of nailed him twice , but were happy with the knowledge that is a trophy with in its self , to me anyway .
as we were backing out his big dinner plate ears got us , and he quickly vanished with out make any niose . the next time we saw him he was over 100 metres away and above .looking down at us .
I said to myself , self when we get to do that again ,don't waste to opportunity ,get a bloody photo of it .
as day is winding down ,and its becoming duiker time according to denessee,we slow it right down and glass a lot more ,as we head along the creek at a snails pace .
there quite a bit of animal movement ,but sadly its nearly all young springbok .
we head back towards the track and walk towards the camp .

at dinner roy ,says tomorrow we are heading to another property to hunt ..........

25th july

we wake to a cool windy day , have some coffee and toast .
today is the wormalds staff , payday and day off, but dennessee and his son madeda choose to stay on and hunt with us , which is most appreciated ,and definately worthy of noting in my book .
on a property about and hour and a quarter away , called 'ntoni" which is said as its spelled , we get there at firstlight , and the first thing l seen is a steenbuck , they are little hotties ,we have one on quota , but this guy aint stopping ,and the fact the firearm is still packed away in it hard case .

we drive past the owners house to what looks like a lodge and hunting camp in the process of being built ,we get out and start preparing our gear , when bugger me dead I see an emu .
a ridgey didge emu .
straight away l like this place ,and start thinking of home , the first time its even entered my head since arriving in j/bourg (as roy calls it ,'gangsters paradise ')
madeba thought l wanted to get a photo with it ......and started to go to herd it closer for me
laughing l told him ,if you get to close to it, its going to kick the shit out you , bloke .......
that pulled him up pretty quick .

roy said that he thought l be surprised .
off we go to do some diesel stalking this chilly morning, with me and the boys in the back .
this looks to be a bloody big property , roy said theres about 60 kms of road on here, and it needs another sixty .
down low its warming quite nicely , but denessee said don't take your jacket off ,you will need it on top .
we see some very nice animals , including red hartebeest and both sorts of wilde beest .lots of springbok .
when dennessee quickly gives roy the hand signal .
there was a cracker black spring bok , about 100 metres out and down under neath us ,that needed another look , so me and denessee, jump off and go for a look , but after 3/4 of an hour , we didn't get another glimpse of him .
denessee said he was very good ......
we didn't drive another 5 minutes when roy spotted an impala ram ,down in the huge gully under us .
he sadi this was well worth a bit of gravel rash getting to him for another look so out we go , 15 minutes later we spot him about 200 metres away and marching like he on a mission .
I told him a will pop it from here , but we will have to work at getting him out .
not real sure how I stuffed this shot up ,but l guessed him at just over 200 metres ,on a fairly steep down hill angle . with a bit of breeze , and waited for him to stop ,before shooting but . l hit him way back ,in fact , about 11 inches from where I was aiming , and near broke him in half .
at the shot, l seen it was disgusting ,and seen him break and tumble down where l couldn't give him another , so me and madeba run down there like a couple of ibex with out the grace.
and find him down but not out , so madeba . stabs him in the back of the neck at the point where the spine meets the skull .
then we gut him and take in turns carrying him out . over our shoulders .
set him up just above the road for photos .

roy said that he thought he of been a bit bigger than he was, but he was plenty big enough for me ,with a good bit age about him ,and some wear .
good start to the day , mate.

we clambered up into the back for some more, diesel stalking .
on the way up , we found a nice shady spot under some prickle bushes to stash our impala .
and kept going up .we spotted a kudu in a draw a long ways off and started a stalk only to see him dart off like he could read our minds.
at the ute we stopped for a sandwich and water .before tracking off again.
once we weaved our way to the top , denessee smiled that told you so grin ,mate it was smoking up here .
I told them there was no way we would see animals up here , they would be in the lee ward side in the silence zones where animals feel safe .
roy just laughed and said, you just trust me boy .......
buger me there was a wind chill going on .
not 200 hundred metres around the next bend we see a black wilde beest and then 40 more .
we stopped to glass them ,there a really good bull in amongst them about 400 metres out in the open .if there was no wind id have had a crack at him .so we make a plan.
we got off and went to the lee side edge and right there 40 metres away was 30 odd, blue wilde beest beded up out of the wind .
we sat and watched them as there was only cows that we could see .
we mustve been about 40 feet out of there wind , because they were right there in front of us , me and roy go a little foreward ,ever so slowly , looking for a bull .
we see a young one ,but roy said there will be a better on than that .
we have gone as far as we can and if we move we will be busted .
when roy said keep and eye on that one .
he will look in a second ,then they will be gone .
I got ready , roy stood up , and the bwb moved as one and were gone just like that , ......
they ran off and up and ended up taking their black cousins with them .
about a half mile they all formed circles and held their positions .
we laughed at the ease there feet hit the deck running, and started a new plan .
madeeba and dennessee, would go all the way around the windy side ,and stay out of sight while we would approach from the lee ward side .
and try and get close enough to judge the bulls and take a shot .
roy asked if l had a preference ,of either .which I didn't .
so down and along we go .

shortly after roy says have you seen this before .about 400 metres away theres 4 brown fluff balls skipping along over the rocks and around the shrubbery .
as soon as they stopped they virtally disappeared.
roy said you know bluey ,your a long way up when you see these guys .vaahl rheboks.........
we watched them watching us ,for a minute .and legged it off after the wildebeest .
and so we kept being busted all the rest of the day we would walk this way and they would run that way .at 3pm we went back to the ute for another sanga and water .to give them time to settle down .
but instead they ran directly across from us straight up into the wind and dropped from over the edge and bolted down in to a canyon and up the other side ,before they settled down .
we grabbed the eski (cooler).and went to the edge and sat there scoffing the tucker and drinking the water , while watching from afar . trying to get a plan together .
they were maybe a km and a half away on a huge clear face that mustve felt safe ,because the more we looked the more animals we saw .
water buck , a heap of zebra , two different lots of both wilde beest , blesbok , springbok ,harte beest , gemsbok.and eland .
that was about the end of that ,for the day .
with only ,not evenand hour and half of day left , sat and watched all these game animals in their serenity .eating and drinking , and planning our tomorrow , as it was fore cast to be even windier .
we will be ,getting blown around here again , that vote was unanamious...
we went back down the windy track to get our impala , and went to the butchery on this property .
we met a group of local meat hunters ,and shared some of their beer , it was very good .roy knew these blokes and we shared many jokes in a short amount of time .
after the skinniung was done and the head cut of my impala , as he will be a skull mount with the bottom jaw still attached .
and a flat skin .
roy said he will take me up and meet the owners on the way home as ed's beer also tastes very good .
once we were there , roy introduced me to ed and his lovely wife heather ,they were great hosts as soon as my casn was empty , ed quickly replaced it with another ..........
when we left there I sure was glad I didn't have to drive .
lucky dennessee was with us .

..great stuff my mate, glad y'all enjoyed yourselves. Would have liked to have been there.. ;)

Keep it coming bluey.

Just saw this post. Fantastic write up bluey! That description of the lioness hunt was the bomb. I think I would have had to throw my pants away after that episode!! Sounds like you and the misses are having a great time. Keep up the writing.

thanks for comments folks ,
once denessee drove us back chikwere we had another of jen 's delicious game meat feasts , and several more cleansing ales . mingled in with lots of laughs .im certainly seeing the wormalds have so many return clients , they are fantastic hosts ,and rapidly becoming friends .

26th july

were away nice and early , only to get 10 minutes down the road and remember , I forgot my camera ,and roy forgot his lieca binos , and we were a bit dry on it, this cold windy day .
denessee had, had a late one also ,and had given the juice a bit of a nudge when he got us home last night aswell .
we mustve stunk like a brewery.
we had left the lost gear at Ed and Heathers place,, so we stopped by there on the through ,trying not to breathe on them .
as we were driving in we saw 3,steenbuck running like crazy through the bare crop fields , l really like the idea of the centre pivots ,that seem to be every where we go .
there's a whole lot more water in southern Africa than l ever imagined . although most of it seems to be under the ground .
we start to go up top and see what we can put up .
but as we are going around a bend roy spots a kudu bull ,a long way off .
and we go in after him .
the meat hunters are up and into it early this morning as we hear ,5 pops in the distance .as we make our way down the canyon and back up the other side trying to get in on the kudu ,roy found .
as we are climbing up the wind is increasing and man , its refreshing this morning ,up top and no sign of the kudu and we stalk along the top for awhile , and ran into this young fella .and spent some time sneaking in to see how close l could get ,at 6 or 7 metres .
with the wind about 40 knots here right now .he knew something wasn't right but the direction of the wind was from him towards us .
and l got 4 photos of him ,this was the last one,you can see his right eye has made contact with me ,and he never hung around after this photo ,but it was definitely a moment for me, specially with 2 close ecounters of the kudu kind ,for the week

we kept walking along the top in this gale of wind ,but we never did come across the big kudu bull roy spotted .

hwe had walked the piss out us and headed back to the ute ,done a bit more diesel stalking ,glassing many times at lots of animals .seen a mob of blue wildebeest and decided to walk em up .
we went 2 different ways hoping to stay on them and we put in some walking for a few hours up and back down eds hills , at ntoni.
after midday we met up with denessee and he said that there are both specie of wildebeest just over the other side , so off we go ,back over the top and start a slow decent on the other side where we saw lots of spring bok which were straight onto us and departed taking some very decent gemsbok with them .
shortly after , denessee slows down and said they are just down below us ,here . so we bum slide our way down to get 140 metres above them and start glassing for the bull .
roy says for me to slowly slide about 30 metres to the left as the best bull , is covered up with bush .
l take my boots off and load the 300 rum , set the stick for a sitting shot , and ever so slowly slide to the left till I can get the shot .
once in position l wait for him to stand .the wind is blowing here from right to left .and fairly puffing away .
the springbok start to come back up from under the bwb, and if l can shoot the bull and quickly get on one of the spring bok , I will as theres a couple of decent boys here .
after 20 minutes the first girl bwb is starting to shift and stand , then several of them follow suit .
l click the safety all the way foreward and line up the bull as he reluctantly starts to rise .
BOOM, and he takes a couple of side step and then hits the bolt ,with a claret squirting out both sides of him .I quicky reload and start looking for the springbok , but they are just a memory .

Great report on a great hunt bluey! Love the pictures!

this guy was tuff, the way he was bleeding I didn't think he would go 50 metre , more like 150 metres with a blood trail you wouldn't believe .
it was quite a task getting him down from here .
roy has this ripper canvas that you just roll the animal in and it has an envelope for the head to sit in and then you just lace him up an grab the handles ,and run down hill .in this country .
it work well , and its a good work out .
roy drcides we need to put a spring bok or two or hopefully a crazyhorse (black wildebeest ) in the coolroom ,for the rest of the day as l still have a few animals to bag ,
so we start looking for some springbok .never seen bugger all for the rest of the arvo ,at sunset we go to the butchery , a nd see why there was no spring bok down on the flats theres six of them on the gimbles and three impala and a whopping big eland ,to boot.
plus some other goodies already in the meat locker .we help the boys hang their meat up and then another eland cow turns up ,but there sno more room , so everything else has to hang out here for the night .
no biggy , its plenty cold enough .......
227.JPG

well young max shouldn't be hungry tonight , ha ha ha
l liove this butchery , it so well set up .I wish l had of used me nogan and took a heap of photos of it ,would make a good thread ...........
once we are done here , roy suggests that maybe we should go and drink a couple more of eds beers .......
I drank the first one to be sociable and the second one because the first one tasted so good .but that was is it .don't want to feel like that again tomorrow .
got home to the women and another plate of fine African home cooked tucker at a respectable hour ,tonight .
seen a couple more steen bucks on the road , and my first duiker ,tonight .

27th july,

the property owner that we hunted to day , never got its name but it was big and low fenced ,wouldn't hunt on the lords day , and told the Englishman ( sounds so much better in Afrikaans ) that we were the ones that have to exp[lain our actions the maker .for hunting on his day ......
the first thing l noticed was flatland , this was going to be easy , except for the wind , as it was we already cancelled going up in a hot air balloon this trip over some parks, cos of the weather , spewing on that ,its something we really wanted to do .
we started walking after a good springbok , and we walked and walked all morning seeing plenty , they seem to like being near horses , on this property any way .
got in on a cracker , and put a shot straight over his back at sixty metre , don't know?
any way he stopped and looked back at a bit over 200 ,that one sent him to heaven , and not 40 minutes later l shot a nice black one at about the same distance

its just after lunch and roy suggests , we go and try for a black wildebeest , just near here .
he said its open country and the shot will be getting long .sounds good .
so we get going ,had lunch on the trot today .roy said that that didn't happen to often . no prob ,mate .
I usually eat lunch either winching up ,when at sea or driving to get something for the boat when on land .
we get to wherever the hell he took me to this time . its a rough open place , with a high fence that goes for as far as you can see . we park the ute and once again start walking .
done that much walking this trip im starting feel like that hobbit, Frodo in the movie lord of the rings .
we see some herds of black wilde beests way off to the left , and head on over that way in this open ground , they run and we follow .
they are keeping about 800 metres distance , then they run some more .
get above them and start pushing them down towards a dam and granite hill , with some smaller wooded area around it .
they go straight for it .and past it . so we decide to walk down past and see what we can come up with .
as we get near the dam roy says do you see those white blesbok , l had seen them from up top ,but didn't pay them any attention .
there will be a couple really good bulls in there would you like to hunt one , so we changed course ,and got into 250 metres of them there were both sorts there and getting a bit skittish and started to run .ruy through up the sticks and said the second from the front as soon as he stops you will get your shot.
boom he drops like a stone .
and the black wilde beest take off again into the wooded area , so we leave the blesbok there and try for number four until its getting to late , the bloody thing are as skittish as hog deer .
we go back and take some photos of the blessie

Nice job Frodo!
