Some CZ questions

CZ is a hardy rifle.

They are practically giving it away!

You are not that far removed from me geographically.
Perhaps, if you want to handle and shoot one of these we can meet up one day this summer and you can give mine a whirl.

I appreciate the offer! Always looking for a reason to head down south for the weekend!

You van not go wrong with a CZ, it's a work horse and will not let you down! Let a gunsmith polish the action and enjoy!

yeah its pricey but worth it. think of it as a long term thing. i bought mine after looking on that site after a certain person on here mentioned it. mine is same a .404 and @PeteG keeps asking to look after it for me . i have had a few custom built rifles and this is for the price i think is good value. i am very impressed with it.

When it's what you make a living using, always buy the best you can possibly afford. That's my policy when it comes to tools.

So here is a question about weight. I hunt with a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter in .270Win. I just weighed it, and including scope, it comes in at 9.8 lbs. CZ lists the 550 at 4.2 kg, or 8.4 lbs. I also see them listed at 9.38 lbs on other sites. Add another poind for a scope and you're in the 9.5-10.5 lb range. Not a whole lot of extra weight compared to my little pea shooter.

I see people complain about the weight of the 550, but to me it seems on the light side for a rifle of that power... Am I missing something here, or is my rifle just a brick, which if it is, now I know why my shoulder was happy to slide the sling off come the end of the day.

yup its a brick .....:D . my .404 weighs 9lbs without a scope and one of my .458 lotts (not a cz but custom rifle on a 98 action)weighs just a bit over 9lbs. dont like carrying heavy rifles ;)

Agree, I bought a used Weatherby Mark V in 270 Weatherby. It's just heavy, accurate as hell but heavy. We have a Rem XCR II in 375 Weatherby that weighs 7 1/4 lbs with a Leupold 2-7x scope. With 375 H&H factory ammo it isn't bad at all to shoot

Yeah that's really heavy. Our vintage BDLs in 270 stocked in walnut come in at 7 1/2 lbs without scope and rings 8 1/2 lbs with Leupold 3.5-10x scopes, rings and sling. The Rem XCR II I bought in 375 H&H in 2011 came in at less than 7 1/2 lbs with Talley QRs and a Leupold 2-7x scope (a little on the light side). My CZ in 500 Jeffery comes in at 11.25 lbs without scope (2 12oz mercury recoil reducers cause I'm a wuss), which is just about right for me.

Gentlemen, Aaron lives in Canada. If he won the purchase of those rifles, he would have to get them across the border. There are firms like Prophet River or Irunguns, who would import it for him at a cost of $250-300. Plus our dollar is currently valued at about $.75USD. The exchange is about a $1.35. All told that rifle is getting pretty expensive for a CZ.

There are plenty of nice rifles on Gunnutz, you just have to keep your eyes open for them. Usually 375, but that is OK.

I know there are a lot of .404 die hards here, and I realize the nostalgia associated with the rifle. I'm not too sure if they are as versatile on this side of the pond for moose, elk, etc. as the .375. I may be wrong, and if so feel free to let me know!

Aaron hope you find what you are looking for! Weight and overall length would be a concern hunting in the thick stuff of western Canada and Eastern Alaska.

you are probably not wrong , with regards to the 375 h&h being more versatile over there , however when did we begin buying rifles with regard to logic :sneaky:

I see that Leduc is south of Edmonton, eh :)

At Cabelas in Edmonton, they have listed online three rifles in 375 H&H: Weatherby Vanguard 2 for $612, Winchester Model 70 Alaskan for $1600 and a Sako 85 Bavarian for $2550. I'm guessing those are all in Canadian dollars, eh. You don't see too much mention of Vanguards on this site, but they are quality, accurate rifles.

I'd get the Model 70. If it's real wet where you'll be hunting have it Cerakoted and fitted for a synthetic stock. If it's like Colorado, snowy but not wet, no reason not to leave it blued/walnut.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
