Looking at possibly acquiring a custom rifle built on a Mexican small ring Mauser, 6.5 CM.

I know next to nothing about these actions. From what research that I have done, it seems the general consensus is that the action are fine as long as it is a small;l/medium caliber.

Any thoughts?

Value? Of course it depends on wood, metal work, etc.

I believe there were two versions of the Mexican Mauser.
IIRC, the first few thousand (1902) were made by DWM and have a Mauser 98 bolt shroud and flag safety.
That was carried over to the 1910 Mexican Mauser.
The later contract run (1936) have a Springfield style bolt knob/safety.
I'm not sure if the '36 bolt can be changed.
The pre 1910 actions are beautifully made - on par with an Oberndorf sporting action IMO.

The later actions were made in Mexico and are actually pretty good also. I believe that if you have them re-heat treated they are likely safe for most modern 60,000psi cartridges. I am nearly finished with the one in the photos. The stock is off being checkered. It is a 1930s vintage with the cocking knob mentioned by Huvius removed, 3 position safety added along with a new bolt handle and Blackburn bottom metal. Chambered for 7x57 Mauser and because I did not get re-heat treated I plan to keep loads conservative in the 50K psi range. There are other small ring actions original to Oberndorf but they are not common.

Just moving to DM. Yes, please ask your friend if he knows somebody who might be willing to support a persistent hunt in the snow.

If you ever decide to sell this rifle, I will buy it with the dies, bullet, brass, the works. Dan
