Show Us Your Hunting Knife

A knife that's seen a few things and been a few places.

A simple hunting knife that's small and convenient. I drop this in a pocket in its case. I do not wear it on a belt. View attachment 424331
I affectionately call this knife 'the returning wanderer." Pocket clip got sprung, was lost and summarily stolen. Later found and recovered from the thief and fixed the clip and engraved with my name in so many places. Lost a few more times before a good man made me this lanyard.

The schrade Old timer was the first and only factory made knife I bought, and having lost it, was the impetus for me to make my first knife which has bought me to where I am today with a great deal of gratitude to the good folks here on the forum

I used these to skin game and steers on the farm .Could but them at any trading store, sharpen on river stones and if it was lost ,cheaper than chappies to replace

Here's mine. Made by a good friend of mine. D2 tool steel and a Mopani Handle. Called the Heritage Hunter by A.S. Strydom Knives.

Saving it for DG Hunts only, and it will one day cut my first elephant's tail:

Well it is for sure that you make some incredibly nice knives. You have inspired me to narrow down my collection of factory knives. Should be somewhat easy on the mind. If I could get it down to ten I'd be doing something.

My Von Gruff, been carried not used due to work relocation.
A bit of Aussie Redgum and Kiwi ingenuity . Well known knifemaker Garry Keown created this to meet my requirements.
Aussie member Bruce Moulds able to meet up and show me his well used Micarta handle Von Gruff knife. One of his prized possessions.
He was very keen to see this design and handle it.

The 4x4 hunter is a good design Chris and in fact I have another on the bench at the moment that shoud be finished and ready to go early next week. Liking it more each one I make as an all round using knife. Big enough for all hunt chores and small enough to carry every day.

Nyati, I like the second knife in the series you posted. IMHO it has very "clean" lines and is esthetically pleasing.

Thank you, actually it´s a version of the well known Loveless hunter.

Thanks for posting! I took the liberty of re-posting here. I like this knife. It has some nice lines and I'd guess pretty good ergonomics for heavy use. Obviously a serious tool. Would have same function as some of the older, heavy use designs from the mid to late 1800s as supplied by the trading companies and seen in the organized buffalo (bison) hunting camps. Marketed in North America and labeled by some as the Hudson's Bay Camp Knife or buffalo knife. Many were imported from Sheffield cutlers.
Bottom pic is a Hudson's Bay Camp Knife by Jukes Coulson- Sheffield. It has a heavy 9" blade.

Been watching some re-runs of the Forged in Fire series. No matter how hoakie some of this reality TV stuff is, this series is both educational and entertaining!! :)

The format is a very demanding triple elimination competition among professional or semi-professional custom bladesmiths with experience ranging from a couple years to over 25. Also, I keep seeing competitors use thin, blind, tang-in-handle systems and sure enough many end up with damaged, warped or broken handles/grips during the testing... just scratch my head watch. Out of maybe 25 competitors in the latest few episodes I've watched, two tangs have broken off during the jury's trials.

I know that the judges have quite often commented when one of the contestants has too small of a tang when the plans call for a hidden tang. I also wonder at times if there might also be a nick or grinding err on the tang just before the blade.

But I agree the show is one reality show that I really enjoy. It is amazing at some of the quality that is put out by the contestants undet the time constraints that they are under.

True, if the particular pattern calls for a hidden or blind tang, no choice. But I do see some of the contestants purposefully do it even though they have the choice of a much more robust handle attachment. Also true that there are some really well made and attractive blades produced under the extremes of the skills required and time constraints of the program.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
