Show off your 98 mausers

Is that a gradual transition from octagonal to round over the full length of the barrel or is the change at the end of the fore stock. Hard to judge form the pic.
End of the forend.

10.75x 68 1930 model.

no I'll never have The money, many here never say never but I just don't make much money. I've just always wanted a 9.3

Africa is reasonably priced, or cheap hunting. I always thought it was out of reach. It depends on what you want and your priorities, what you want most. I'm on average wage but we made it happen.

At the risk of boring everyone (I've posted this pic several times before)

These are my two 'African rifles'

Both Mauser 98 FNs - top one in 9.3 x 62 and bottom one in 404 Jeff

They are the only ones I take into the bush - not even the Blaser comes with me (unless one day I go for a 458 Lott barrel and bolt in a silly and wild moment)

Nice, Mauser were going into the bush long before Blaser.

Someone mentioned a .280ai, it's a cool cartridge.

I've always wanted a 404 Jeffrey, if I had a real use for one getting one may be easier.

A 1908 7x57 (refinished - not by me), and a Persian 8x57.

I'll have to find a few 9.3x62 cases and a few bullets to check the feeding before I start the build. I'll have to check the lugs for any set back, but I couldn't feel anything with my finger at the shop.
@TroyF
As you will only be using the 9.3 in NY how did you come to choose the it over the American 35 Whelen.
I understand the 2 metric calibers but thought the Whelen would be more at home in NY

I used to say the same but others here are in the same boat. They choose cull hunts instead of trophy hunts.
Same excitement at a cheaper price and picture make for great stories and memories.
A trophy hunt for me in Namibia was not much dearer than a buffalo hunt in my own country, Australia.
I chose Namibia and I was a blue collar worker.

This is a pre-war 8x57JS I purchased from @rookhawk a while back.

@rookhawk: repairs completed to get it shooting:

Full length glass bed and repairs to cracks in the wrist (traded ammo w a master stocker friend)

Refinished w proper oil finish by myself

Re-cut sear and tuned triggers by Gary Junk, Arctic Gun Works. Gary also rechecked to confirm that it is a JS.

Cleaned bore to bare metal. Light stippling from corrosive primer use but otherwise excellent.

Shoots extremely well w iron sights. Mounts are not standard dimensions so fitting a scope properly is a $1,200 adventure. I’m going to play with it for a while before deciding. So far I’ve only got $200 into it over and above the purchase price and it functions like the day it was made.

Well that cleaned up really, really well!

I wanted to mention, you will find custom claw mounts on eBay with great frequency. Sometimes its the rings, plus the mounts. They go for a couple hundred bucks. If you look carefully at the eBay pictures, you can often figure out that the offset of the rear height versus front makes it highly likely that its a mauser mount. If the holes are correct for the rear of a mauser bridge, you could install the rear ring and new claw base, then slide in the new dove tail and front ring. Then poke around for a scope that would fit it. It's a bit of trial and error, but a patient man could do it for a few hundred bucks with old parts.

I've always like mausers and any cartridges used it them, as a kid reading cartridges of the world he 9.3 was more appealing. I'm young enuff(30) to not grown up like many have and the Mystique of the 35whelen.

I've had 35whelens and shot others, it never bid anything for me. I had a nice 358 Norma mag nice round but same as the whelen. I love 35 rem and 358 win even the 350rm I've wanted a 95 Winchester in35 win for many years so like like the 35s.

I have German Ancestry so that makes the choice easier, plus the 9.3x62 is a little more punch the the whelen. I am a big fan of Ackley so maybe some day I'll do a 35 whelen ai just cuz.

@Nevada Mike very nice looking rifle! How long did it take to get the GMA action? Just curious about your quick release levers at the 12 o'clock position. Rifle recoil would tend to loosen levers at 12 o'clock. I put mine at the 3 o'clock position. Some people like the front at 3 and the rear at 9 o'clock, pointing at each other.

It's a valid complaint. A response would be "because it looks prettier to the eye". On heavy recoil, I index mine at 3 and 9 o'clock. On lower recoil guns like my 7x57, I do like the symmetry of standing levers.

A debate on anal aesthetics wouldn't be complete if we didn't argue which side the levers should be on. Should they be away from the ejection port to avoid possible collisions?...but then you're snagging the levers on your chest when you two hand carry your gun at ready. Or should they be on the ejection port side so all the unclean lines are on one side of the gun?...but then you have even more stuff to snag on brush that is facing into the jess at all times.
<clearly, I've debated this topic with all my personalities many times, never resolving the argument.>

Don't waste your time on the 35AI it won't do anything a properly loaded Whelen will and less playing around.
A 250gr at 2,700fps with 4,000fpe is enough punch for me out of the Whelen or a tad over 2,500 with a 275gn Woodleigh.
