show me a pic of your favorite outdoor place ever found

Hard to pick one, bit here's some spots I've had the good fortune to hunt.

One of many favorites, a person unknown had buried his dog at the top of a mountain in the Tuscarora Forest, central Pennsylvania.View attachment 607872View attachment 607879
As soon as I saw this photo I knew it had to be northeast US. I’ll never get rid of my Pennsylvania home on the southern cliff of the Pocono plateau overlooking the Appalachian Trail.

^ Northern Territory, Australia, I have taken buffalo not too far from here. Amazing country.

I'd love to, but "No Way, Jose!"

There will be 10,000 people there the next time I visit.

Just got back from a brutal two week trip to Mindanao- another one of my favorite spots. Needed to visit friends and family and our newest foundling, stray addition to the group- a two-year-old in the middle of the "terrible twos" :) Patience pays off with this age as anyone so blessed with the experience can attest :)

Of course the clueless idiots in the US State Department keep issuing high level travel warnings for Mindanao- seems like that has been a continuous declaration since at least 2016.

No matter what you do or how you plan- traveling half-way around the world with multiple airlines and multiple connections is not a pleasant experience. Unfortunately, it seems to be getting worse, thanks in no small part to our illustrious SEC of Trans - Mayor Pete Bootygig. I'd say he is "on top of it", so to speak.

Saw a few non-locals around Manila and at the Manila airport. Some maybe just transiting through the airport or connecting to more popular destinations like Northern Luzon or Palawan Island. But very few in Mindanao, which seems normal based on my past visits. Maybe the travel warning continues to have "positive" effects- minimizing tourists! Probably saw 2-3 non locals out of 200K people or so in a couple of the large malls in Gensan and Digos.

Spent time in local freshwater river swimming areas and on a couple of beaches. Got to snorkel a small reef area that was loaded with tropical fish- Nemo and all his cousins. More than I remember from a few years ago and definitely an increase in the population of spectacular angel fish.

Spent a day up on a loop road through Kapatagan on the SE slopes of Mt. Apo. The area is a huge producer of vegetables. Nice to get up into the cool fog of clouds that forms on the mountain beginning about 11 AM each day.

An inlaw relative's small farm north of Digos- puppies, goats, cows, horses, ducks, chickens, etc :)

The South Luangwa Valley in Zambia. Note the small blurry figure in the background. An elephant.

Yup luangwa one of my favourite places on the planet....lower zambezi up from luangwa confluence is pretty spectacular as well...pretty rugged and hilly compared to the flood plain areas....but also have a kind of soft spot for a place called takeri private reserve....;):D Beers:

I've got one of those that hangs around my house as well and travel there often. The Philippines is such a beautiful country. I wish they had something there to hunt.

This is soooo non-descript compared to the other things I see here. But there is always context, right?

This is a small slough on the Nushagak River. It doesn't look like much, and it's often overlooked by people traveling up and down the river. Many years there's not enough water to get up into it for a boat of any size. I have several inflatables with small outboards and oars that help with that.

I have shot a lot of moose in this slough, and called in other moose for friends. I have watched so many sunrises and sunsets, and seen incredible things that didn't involve dead moose. Again, it's kind of plain-jane but it's one of my favorite spots. I have plans to take a new friend up there this fall; he has yet to kill a big game animal. I aim to change that.

Hah, I understand! A much overlooked travel destination. Over 7000 islands. Lots of jungle, mountains and unlimited beaches. Some of the craziest driving one could hope to survive. :) In lieu of hunting, expats usually have to substitute something aquatic- swimming, diving or snorkeling. Plenty of saltwater fishing opportunity but little to no business infrastructure to support it. Beach bum could become a full time job if not careful. :)

Cost of living hard to beat overall. This trip, I rented a small Nissan SUV for about $40 per day. Gasoline cost is on par with US average. Most all gas stations are manned... the instruction is, "unleaded, full tank". Rural areas always have self serve stations for single motors (small motorcycles), tricycles, etc. with gasoline in glass bottles by roadside with honor system pay. Most workers and businesses in Philippines would laugh at minimum wage or 4 day a week jobs. The country runs on micro to small-sized retail business- from sari-sari stores to mall kiosks, to mall outlet retail, to small specialty businesses. A few large industrial complexes around larger cities. Some of the world's largest pineapple plantations are on Mindanao. Agriculture, including for export, is large, important segment of economy. Tuna fishery for export for high end market is very large, important.

Some dive and snorkel support businesses for the channel between Negros and Cebu Islands, Dumaguete-Oslob area and also some unsupported opportunities around Iloilo. Diving and swimming with the whale sharks is a big deal there and one thing I need to do before I get too old. Regional travel by air is not expensive and provides access to many areas of the Philippines in addition to nearby areas on Borneo and Brandon's favorite place, Papua New Guinea. ;)

May not be much to most of you guys but historic Gunning River in Barnegat NJ. Where I shot my 10 year old banded black duck. It was somewhere I always wanted to hunt but never had. Pure peace. Middle of winter, I had the spot all to myself.

I can appreciate!! Rare, special opportunity to hunt in a favorite place. Black ducks are one of my favorites! And a 10 year old with a bracelet! The only similar spp we have in the middle/southern Rio Grande Valley down to about Santa Teresa is the Mexican duck or Mexican-like duck. Almost indistinguishable from the Black duck.

Thanks for posting. Very cool!

Really appreciate that! Took me 10 years to get that band, coincidentally. It was perfect that it happened to be a big old NJ black duck. One day I do need to get down that way and complete the "black duck slam."

- American
- Mottled
- Mexican Black Duck

I actually managed to even speak to the biologist who banded mind. He said he assumed that it was trading back and forth between Nova Scotia and NY/NJ.

Loaded up my daughter, the mutt, some snacks yesterday and headed up the hill for first fishing of the year. Nice day. A light breeze called for a little extra effort “shooting” some WF6F into the wind :)
