My 600 is a 308… I absolutely love it… if I could find one in 350RM at a reasonable price I’d snatch it up in a heartbeat…

Yeah, I was lucky. Mine was in pristine shape. We replaced the hard factory pad with a same-size Kick-Ezzz pad and my ‘smith modified the height of the factory shark-finn sight to work with a receiver-mounted aperture sight.

We added a 3-pt Ching sling and the result is a great little package for deer camp. Definitely a “woods” carbine. It would also do well for bear security in the Alaskan boonies.

In the research for this project I am beginning to find the same thing. For this build I went with the .358 win. However last week I came across a Montana rifle company x3 chambered in .325 wsm and couldn't help but put it on layaway!

I have one in a BLR with a 20" barrel. Most people consider it a "woods gun" but that is primarily because it was mostly chambered in lever guns when introduced and used with open sights or low power scopes (mine wears the 1.75x6 Leupold). It is tremendous for that purpose. When I head into the swamps of Manistee National Forest my BLR is always in my hands.

But build one in a bolt gun in a 20" (or better yet 22") barrel and put good optics on it and it will take care of deer/elk/bear/moose out to 300 with no problem.

For years I tried to get my hands on one of the Ruger 77s that were made in .358. Hard to find. But now I would build one anyway like you are.

One of the reasons that the .350 RM did not achieve lasting success was those short light rifles it was introduced in...

Had it come out in the Model 700 with a 22" or 24" barrel I am sure it would have been as popular...or more popular, than the .35 Whelen. In equal length barrels is is hotter than the .35 Whelen, which was still a wildcat when the 350 RM was introduced. And it smokes the .358 Win.

Had Remington brought it out hard in a full size rifle it would have stunted the growth of the 35 Whelen and killed off the .358

But by bringing out a monster 35 in those 600 and 660 short, light rifles most people that shot it said "no thanks" and the word spread that it was bad medicine for shooters.

Had it been in proper size/wgt rifles people would have figured out it was really, really bad medicine for big game animals

Typing this makes me want to have a .350 RM built in a proper weight rifle with a 24" barrel

But if you want something in a short light barrel....the .358 WIn is a good choice and underappreciated as a cartridge

I would like to put together a 20" barrel quick handling short action magnum woods gun. I originally wanted a .350 Remington Magnum, but it seemed to be dead unless you have a custom rifle and already have a stock of brass. I would like to stick to a medium bore. I'm thinking maybe either .338 rcm or .325 wsm. It will be used for black bear and elk. Maybe one day might bring it to Alaska for moose but that's later on. What do you guys be think?

I think both the 358 Winchester & the 325 WSM are fine cartridges. I have a couple of 325's that I have cut the barrels to ~22-1/4 & 22-1/2". I think they are both a bit handier now, for my use.
I recently picked up a steel receiver BLR 20" in 358 Winchester. Another under appreciated cartridge. As are most .358's & 8mm's.
