Shooting from sticks

@csmiffy - my tip, leave nothing to chance & get a pair of shooting stix, acquaint yourself to a stance & setup that’s comfortable to you w/ one key point: stock not barrel on the support.

I use a classic 3-leg hickory takedown by Long Grass & sadly a Co. no longer … African Sporting Creations has a similar classic offering. I have varying designs & brands - look at Vanguard, reasonable priced & solid thicker legs in the lower half for expandable option.

@Philip Glass - I really enjoyed your shooting stix summary & w/ a variety of options, good stuff & thx sharing!

Happy Trails

Thank you for the kind comments,

@Ridge Runner , sorry I was meaning if you don't have experience shooting from sticks.

Yes, simple enough to make if you have basic knowledge and basic equipment.

As far as shooting from sticks a bit of practice or previous Expy won't hurt before the first safari.

No problem.

Oops missed that typo. Expy should have been experience.

Interesting comments about the quad sticks. I can certainly see how stable they are but way less maneuverable than a bi or tripod. Sort of goes against the idea of a quick set up stick for me as a noob to the idea.
The set up time for quad sticks isn't bad, it's when an animal is moving that they can be tricky. Especially if you don't have a set to practice with.
I practiced for my S.A. trip off a BOG pod tripod since I thought that tripod would be the most common shooting. As it turned out- I took 2 animals off quad sticks, 1 off traditional wood tripod, 2 off the high rack, 1 prone off a gun bipod, and 1 off hand.
Once the gun is sighted in, use home made sticks, or store bought or trees, kneeling, sitting, etc. You really don't know what your shot opportunity will be until the animal shows itself.

I picked up a set of lightweight sticks from cabelas last year. They fold up and have a gripper where the rifle would sit. Cost me about $20, basically a set if shockcorded tent poles. I need to shoot off them more.

I used a set of Rudolph shooting sticks, and my Ph loved them and I ended up giving it to him. I got the sticks, and practice for almost 6 months, and it seem like my Ph was familiar with them, and we never had any issues with him setting them up. I'm going to get another set.

Good luck with that. I've been tried to contact them for 3 months with no answer on the phone or email. That was earlier this year and I finally gave up. Let me know if you get through.

Here’s a new set I made since the old bamboo ones fell apart. About $11 total.

We bought a set of Jim's 3-piece sticks before our last trip to South Africa. They fit easily in the suitcase. He made extra bottom pieces to attach when Clara is shooting as she is 5' tall and I am just over 6'. We both love them and received a lot of great comments and positive feedback from trackers, PH's and fellow hunters. And they look darn good with a classic rifle. :)

Safe shooting

I have a set of the Bog Pod tripod sticks Craig. I use them all the time when after rabbits as there are a lot of ridges and gullies so standing shots are mandatory and the 20 Vartarg over the sticks makes 150+ yd shots a certainty. I dont use them when after goats/deer but do have a set of stoney point kneeling height bipod sticks that are dead set steady in the sitting position but seldome use them. They carry neatly on my belt.
If you get stuck for a set to try before buying I can send them up for you to play with for a couple of weeks.
I have a set of Bog Pod RLD3 but I find the base to small and wobbly.

On my last trip to the Eastern Cape 2 weeks ago I used Shooting Stix and Rudolf sticks. Both worked very well and much steadier than my Trigger sticks.

Thank you for your kind words and glad they worked out!

Glad you love them!

Just returned from a hunt where, due to the terrain, standing shots were quite long. My kudu was at 375 yds, which is a long, tough shot standing off of sticks for me, yet once again, the ASC sticks were fantastic. As on previous hunts, the PH's were very impressed with the ASC sticks, preferring them over their own in many cases. Functional and such a great aesthetic feel to them. I wouldn't hunt without them.

WoW … 375 off Stix, good on ya!

We have received emails/calls from customers about them shooting even larger caliber like the .416 Rigby, 505 Gibbs, etc.
