Shoot too many animals?

Dory

Make your self a budget and a priority list and stay on line.

Try to have a good idea of what is a good or exceptional trophy. And ask your PH what he estimates the animal to be before making the decision to shoot or not shoot.

One year while hunting we continually were bumping into Kudu's, i let my PH know that if it was not at least 55" i was not interested. I had a Kudu hunt lined up for the following year. Again study pictures and know what a good trophy looks like.

On Zebra, i wanted one with out ghost stripes and was able to get one. You have to look a little longer to find what you are looking for.

Giraffe, if you are looking for a color phase like a black one, turn down the others that present them selves to you and your PH.

I have done the questions as why this trophy is better than this one and your PH should have a good answer for you. We sat and debated the differences on 3 Red Hartebeest bulls all 3 were nice trophy's. 2 were better than the 3rd. I picked the one on the left and the PH picked the one on the right, we had a discussion why his was better than the other. Body size and color of the flat-skin, horns were evenly matched. Therefor, i went with his choice.
We also discussed young and long vs old and better mass, as we did come across some young bulls that had long thin horns.

I know i have made a few PH angry when i did not shoot something that they wanted me to shoot. again i stick to my priority list and will change out a animal if something really stand out.
Thats something I am worried about. I dont wont to piss the PH off as the hunt is 16 days long and I know we are going to see a lot of shooters .

don't worry ,dory .if you can afford it ,do it .
if you cant afford it , sneak in there and get a trophy photo of it .....(trick here is ,to leave the .308 , in the ute )
if you see something you cant leave with out , think of your wish basket, and flick one out of it .
theres always next time
talk to the bloke before you get there.
there is a 50 ,50 chance that you will see something that hasn't sparked your interest ,before , that will be to good to turn down , that's what your card is for ,
the smart play is to allow for atleast 2 or 3 animals extra ,and then swapsies , if you cant afford it ,swap it ..........

Hunting costs nothing in New Zealand .

unbeliavable (difficult word :)

to your thread:
" Wer viel schießt ist noch kein Jäger -
Whoever shoots much is not a hunter yet
Wer wenig schießt ist deshalb noch kein Heger."
The one who shoots little, therefore isn't a gamekeeper yet. "

My first trip I went wanting 8 animals on my list I came home with 13 BUT I passed on a 20 inch (YES 20 inch) bushbuck because I already had one 14 incher. Stupid stupid stupid. The PH and the tracker were going nuts over it. Be prepared that means bring money! You may neber get back again. Who knows.

Not sure I'd want to repeat that story Cliffy....still having nightmares are you? Lol

On our first hunt, my wife and I planned for 10 but ended up with 15 critters... However we were budgeted for the extra. On our recent 3rd trip over, I had planned on 14 and took 21..... Again, still fit in the budget..

However on all my hunts, there were animals in my list that I did not get, and I took animals that were not on my list however were good opportunities that presented themselves. It happens regularly and I enjoy having a bit of an unknown factor going out each day.

Work up a budget then double it just in case you run into one or more "monsters" that is a once in a lifetime deal...

I don't think I have ever gone to Africa and not shot some extras that just happened along!

Just went and doubled my overdraft and tripled my credit card Should be right now ,
won't have to sell the house yet .

I had 7-10 animals on my dance card originally. I ended up with 17... They took credit card!! Lol

you done well don, 10 +7 = 17
you gotta love it when a plan comes together,:whistle:

Pick what animals you want to hunt this time and save the others for another trip!

Gives you perfect self justification to go again!

I've always followed what I feel is the excellent advice quoted above. I especially agree with 'Adrian's' comment about setting a few species aside as a justification for making return trips.

However you end up doing it I wish you the best of luck!

I think we all get there and add something to the list but as suggested one should really set some limits in advance.

I originally had allowed for nine animals .
The most exspensive being 2 Kudu Bulls , but now ive allowed for 11 .
But we are now going to spend a few days in the Kalahari on a cull hunt with up to 20 extra animals to hunt !
That might end up as 21 animals !
Maybe I will sell the house ! HA .

I ended up with 17 and that's only because my PH put the brakes on me!!!

I still have Gemsbuck, Sable, Waterbuck, Nyala, more Kudu, Lechwe and Mtn Reedbuck on my want list. I'm sure there will be more. Likely a few color phase critters too!

OMG not color phases:eek: ok, me too :A Secret:

And Klipspringer, Vaal Rhebok, cape and sharps greysbuck, blue and red duiker, dik dik, oribi, suni, Nyala, leopard, hippo, croc, giraffe, chobe bushbuck, Roan, Sable, ... A whole bunch of small game. Baboon, vervet monkey, bushpig Oh yea and then there is bongo, sitatunga, Dwarf forest buffalo, savanna buffalo, Lord Derby Eland, And the list goes on and on! And then there are the bigger better ones of the species I already have.

Then there is Alaska and I need to set an appointment with a big Brown Bear amongst others, like Caribou, moose, Musk ox, blacktail deer.... And ZN and Australia, the British Isles, Asia.

Darn, best get to planning;)

Bob, there's nothing like a hunt for the big bears. I've taken both grizzly and brown bear. What a thrill. Nothing beats it in N. A. IMO

I agree. Griz and big coastal brownies are both terrific hunts.
