I have a brand new Shilen match grade chromoly barrel short chambered in .280 Remington up for someone’s next project.

It is for a large ring Mauser 98 with standard threads. The barrel is a 1:9 twist, .575 at 24” and is a #2 contour (see table). I’ll take $300 shipped lower 48 for it, and I’ll discount it a bit if you’re local to D/FW. Thanks!

I’ve got a Shilen match in 270 win with the same profile on a custom Mauser… it’s an absolute tack driver…

That’s a great price on a great barrel!

Shilen barrels are top notch!
@RLL
If they are as good as Douglas air gauged stainless match barrels they will be excellent.
Unfit it won't fit M17 threads or I would be all over it like a seagull on a hot chip. Would make the ideal calibre between my 25 and 35.

I’ve owned a few Douglas match barrels and a few Shilen. I’d put them on par with each other.. might even give a slight edge to Shilen based on my limited experience that amounts to a total of 5 barrels between the 2 brands…

If you’re ever local to the Dallas area, Shilens factory is just a few miles south of the city.. they’re great about letting people tour the factory, explaining how all of their equipment works, what the tests are and how they perform them to ensure performance, etc…

It’s a cool place, staffed by very friendly professionals that are gifted at what they do..

FWIW @Bob Nelson 35Whelen , my 35 Whelen sports a Shilen barrel :)

interesting and out of pure curiosity1 Why? a sale is a sale!
Disagree wholeheartedly, as most of us are here to enrich the hunting community and help each other out. I want the items I list here to go to people who will enjoy them as such. I have eBay if I just want to make money. That’s my soap box for the day. If you’re legit, spend some time on the forum and you’ll figure it out. Plenty of us are happy to help.

I will be in the Dallas area from the 17-21 of October this year.
My wife and I will be staying in Wharton down El Campo way.
We will be catching up with @ Mark Biggerstaff.
I think Mark is organising a bit of a get together with a few other AHers while we are there.

When you get finished introducing El Campo to Bundy and Vegemite, head north.. tour Shilen, then we’ll head east to Longview and let you shoot a whitetail with a Shilen barrel on my 35 Whelen..

The place I’m hunting this year is MLDP land, which means my season runs from 1 October until 28 February…

I plan on being a deer and hog killing, freezer filling fool this year :)

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen, those Douglas Air Gauged barrels are tough to beat. I have a Springfield Armory M1A that was customized by Gunny Hook from Bremen, GA . He installed one, and that thing is a tac driver, if the shooter is capable. I had this rifle worked on when I was shooting NRA High Power Rifle. This rifle will shoot better than I'll ever be able to. After several years, everyone went to the ARs, and the M1A became a thing of the past. :(

Thankyou for your kind offer but when we leave Wharton we will be heading east to Baton Rouge.
Looking at the map it's a bit out of the way unless when we land in Dallas then go out to Longview then down to Wharton.
Would give me just a day to do things. Probably pushing it a bit.
Bob

You’ll enjoy Baton Rouge… my middle daughter is a senior at the university there…

There are some outstanding restaurants in BR, and some great fishing spots if you have anyone that can take you

Bob. .30 sits neatly between your favourites. You might develop a passion for the .30 ought’ six while in the US.

The good thing is you could always use the Whelen action for an ought six in you old age and go gardening with the .35 barrel.

@CBH Australia
Chris have you been on the wacky baccy agin mate.
30 cals don't do much for me. I know they work but I've always liked the 280 and AI version.
Does everything the 270 does and more as well will do everything the ought six will and unlike me it just has that cool factor about it. You know like the 25s and the Whelen. Gets the job done without all the hoop la and fanfare. What's not to like about it.
Bob

I have no vices or bad habits. I’m to tight.

I haven’t owned a .270, a .30-06 or a .35Whelen

.30’s have there place and I will probably always have a .308 although I think the .280a.i is a sweet looking case and great performer. But like our Victorian friend I also have a .300wm because I think it’s another readily available cartridge that has its place.

I think the 7mm range of projectiles are well supported and cover a good range of weight.

Now, ha hmm, I’ve been thinking. The .308 makes sense in Australia. All day, every day. But, well if I wanted to simplify things and just have one hunting rifle in a standard chambering the maybe I would consider the .30-06 in a decent rifle and it would cover most hunting needs in Australia and would be a good plains game rifle.

Back to your question “if the .35 Whelen just gets the job done what’s not to like?”

Well, it seems to be getting its own fanboy club now, is it the next trendy best offering

Back After a Long Time – Hello Again!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a member since 2015 but haven’t been active since 2017. Life got busy, especially with building my second business. Still, I’ve kept my passion for hunting and followed things from afar. Now that I have more time, I’m excited to reconnect, contribute, and be part of the community again.

All the best,
ANDY

I'd like a bag of 100. I could actually pick it up since I'm in North Irving, but if you prefer, shipping it is fine.
