Self import checked luggage taxidermy

Hi, I hunted in SA last August and I’m going back in the same region this September.

I have some flat skin and a pair of horn with the local taxidermy place where I first hunted. If the work is complete by September, I’m considering importing the taxidermy myself by packing it into a checked bag on my way back rather than have to freight it over, for cost savings.

I am unfamiliar with the intricacies of taxidermy export/import and would like to learn if and how this is feasible and worth it. I am importing into Canada, the taxidermy products are zebra hide, impala hide and impala horn. I tried calling and messaging the taxidermy place but I don’t get any replies.

Any advices on where to get started ?

Would not recommend especially not being familiar with the intricacies. Would recommend spending a little more and know your items are being handled correctly. Speaking from experience here!

I’ve never had a problem with tanned skins but haven’t tried any horns or skulls and don’t think I would try that. I had paperwork on the skins but have never been asked about it. It was all common plainsgame with no CITIES or TOPS animals.

CAN'T SAY ABOUT CANADA (WERE YOU AT ONTARIOHUNTER) BUT I ROLLED UP A ZEBRA RUG AND WALKED RIGHT THROUGH COSTA RICA CUSTOMS.

I have imported all my own animals for all safaris, including many CITES , cats, ele, buf and a whole array of PG. Never as luggage, always long after hunt with a shipper, NEVER used any importer agent. I have purchased zebra rugs, springbuck skins and shed horns at roadside shops and brought back in luggage, as well as some carvings, wood, soapstone, NOT ivory. All without any issue, did have bill of sale but never been asked.

A few question answers before I can give better details.

Will all parts/pieces fit in approved airline size baggage?

Do you have any CITES? Schedule 1 or 2?
Any TOPs species?
All pieces fully tanned? Skulls ready for plaques, completely finished to international standards? If yes they are considered "art" and have easier import regs/rules.

My experience is CBSA has no real clue about any of this, in Canada CFIA rules. I have western Canada contact but will/cannot post here.
