Does anyone have recommendations for magnum length action stocks?

The story:

I have a vintage highly custom 1960 era Remington 700 big bore rifle (3.6" length cart, who can guess it?!). It's a wonderful rifle and has served me well.

Now I want to hunt in climes where I simply do not want to take a vintage custom walnut stock. I'm struggling to find a stock for a Rem 700 that will fit a magnum length cartridge since they don't make them anymore. I need something that will stand up to arctic cold and jungle wet, i.e. synthetic.

Anyone out there have any helpful ideas?

Thanks. I tried Stockys, they weren't aware that Remington used to even make magnum length action rifles. Indeed the person I spoke to didn't know the difference between a magnum and long action, so I gave up on them. I like Boyds, I will give them a try, thanks.

I've sent queries to both Boyd's and the Remington Custom Shop.

On forum sales threads, Remington takeoffs made by H.S. Precision can be had for less than $300. Bell & Carlson has some that will work at about half that price.
Edit: Hogue is another option.

hs precision and McMillan make the best stocks.
is that rem action longer than std, or does it just have a longer mag inlet?
if it is just the mag inlet it is not a big job to alter a 30/06 length stock.
might be worth contacting both these makers and having a talk.
bruce.

Can't speak highly enough of the Bell & Carlson...

They are the OEM stock makers for Weatherby, Winchester, Browning, Remington, Coopers, CZ, etc. high end rifles. I have over half a dozen of them on Win 70, Wby Mark V, Rem 700, etc. and my African Battery three custom "upgrade 3" CZ 550 (.300 Wby, .375 H&H, .416 Rigby) wear one...

Full length aluminum bedding block from pistol grip to front swivel with integral bedding pillars, hand laid Kevlar, perfect drop-in, etc. Not sure what higher costs are buying with other stock makers mentioned...

McMillan will make one for the magnum action. But for the money the BC stocks look good.
I’m going to guess 300 weatherby magnum

I too love B&C stocks and have them on both my .308 deer rifle and .300WM elk rifle. But they do not make one that will fit a magnum length action, I already asked.

bruce.

There are three lengths of action: long, short and magnum. Magnum length action has a longer bolt.

"Standard" long actions will fit carts up to 3.34". Magnums, like .375 and my .458 Lott are 3.6". It has a longer bolt, longer mag well etc etc.

If you don't mind a little dremel work, Richards Micro Fit is an option. I sent them a walnut blank for a Remington short action and with some sanding and a little inlet work, it came out very nice. Prices are reasonable too. They have had some bad ink in the past but with new CNC equipment they've done better.

Managed to get an off-the shelf Stocky's laminate, dremel out a bit around the magwell and opened up the barrel channel a bit with a dowel and sandpaper. We're in business!

Good for you Mack, where there is a will there is a way. For most working rifles laminate stocks are tuff to beat.

Indeed, should do the job to keep the rifle in the field, and I can leave the pretty walnut safely tucked away to bring out only on cigar and whisky night! I'd probably take it with me to most of Africa, but Alaska, northern Canada or jungle hunts? Nah.

Five years ago I was having a rifle built for my first Safari. It was built around a Remington 03-A3. Not a lot of work just a barrel swap to 35 Whelen, Timney Trigger and Safety then set into a Boyd's Laminated Stock. It is butt ugly for sure, although I'm willing to take it anywhere on a hunt.

I hunted elephant with Luke Samaris in 2005. It was my fourth safari and I tell you he is a fine gentleman the best. I got the opportunity to meet Patty Curtis, although never hunted with him but enjoyed our conversation around our tent in the Selous. Very sad for a tough guy to leave this world the way he did. Let’s pray the murderers are caught. I hope to see Luke in Nashville.
