Second rifle for Plains Game and Dangerous Game hunt with .416 Rigby

I'm with @Bert the Turtle on this one.

Lighten your load and take just one rifle. The 416RIGBY or the 375H&H whichever you are more comfortable with. Both are very capable of shots out to 200 yards as long as you are. And either caliber with solids will perform perfectly on the smaller game and not damage the hides. My last reason is that when you are out looking for Impala with your 300WM...a MONSTER BUFF is gonna show up. Murphy's Law.

Doing this also reduces the weight of ammo you will need to pack. Heavy bags aren't fun for anyone. There's a lot to be said for traveling light and keeping it simple.

If you are insisting on a 2 rifle battery, I vote for either of the .30 calibers for sheer versatility. Again, which ever you shoot better with. The game you are hunting isn't likely to feel the difference between a 30-06 and 300WM.

.300 Winchester Magnum . Extremely flat trajectory . If you plan to go after eland or Kudu , then use 220 Gr bullets .

Has no one suggested a 35 Whelen yet??

Ha ha ha

Since long range isn't a concern in your understanding, what do you prefer in the 30 cals? Whatever your favorite 308, 30-06 or 300Win Mag is in the gin safe, go with it. Got two favorites, flip a coin. The animal will never know the difference.

Raise your hand if you’ve shot plains game over 200 yards with 400 grains from a .416. What happens if you have the .300 and bump into Mr. Tatonka? I vote one gun.

STD, the 404 Jeffrey load that a lot of us use was developed / provided by Von Gruff who is a Kiwi BTW. In his case a 400 Gr. Woodleigh PP pushed by 84 Gr. of H - 4350 a rebranded AR-2209. Velocity is 2300 FPS out of a 24" barrel. In my case I substituted a 400 Gr. Swift A Frame. My rifle is scoped with a Nikon Monarch African with a #4 German reticle. Welcome to AH.

Awesome stuff. Thanks for the info. Sounds about what I expected.
How does the 400 Woodleigh go on Cape Buff?

STD I can't answer that question since I've not hunted with Woodleigh bullets. Others have, and I expect they will provide some insight.

Personally I took a 416 RM and a 375H&H. If something happened to one I was covered by the other. That said you should have no problems taking your 416 and using it. My longest shot was 280, I would not have had a problem taking it with the 416.

Have safari planned, unfortunately not till '23. Recently acquired CZ550 in .416 Rigby for buffalo hunt. Want to ask for second rifle for plains game, always enjoy the discussion. I have a number of choices 30-06, 300WM, 9.3x62 and .375H&H. Recommendations and comments?
I've used both 375hh and 9.3x62 on a wide variety of plainsgame. Both work exceptionally well.

If you already own a rifle caliber 416 Rigby, I would not get a rifle caliber 9,3x62 or 375 H&H Magnum. I would then prefer a rifle that allows me to shoot heavy game at long range. I have a rifle caliber 340 WBY-Magnum for something like that.

My vote is for 300 Winch - between those competitors. I would prefer my beloved 8x68S, but the Winny is plenty good enough.

Don't overlook the 338WM, its a great cartridge!
Plus one!

Also, I did it all with my 1895 .405 WCF. Shoots 300 grain NF and 400 grain Woodies -- deadly and fun combo.

+1 on the 300 WinMag

I go back in 23 as well. I am taking my 450-400 DR for DG and my Rigby in 275 Rigby shooting 170 grain SN for all PG including Eland

I have been using a "Personal Property" rider on my State Farm homeowner's policy to cover guns when I travel with them.
I have several firearms, but only one is worth over $20K (A Heym double rifle).
Very interested.
Would firearms be covered for damage, as well as, complete loss?
I'll can let the State Farm rider cover my watches...

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
