Searching for less expensive Buffalo hunt

I hate to sound like an elitist, but I wish some species were never incorporated into the game ranching model. Buffalo is one of those.

Now that I’ve triggered half the audience…

If you are truly looking for adventure focused on the overall experience rather than the harvest, I’d suggest shifting to a free-roaming species that offers a tracking-style hunt that mimics a buffalo hunt. Perhaps eland in Northern Namibia? My personal experience has been that the two are virtually the same hunt…as long as you can shoot.
Buffalo and Lion both inside the high fence are not the same hunt for obvious reasons.
Lion more so than Buffalo.
However there are some very large properties where buffalo herds have been roaming and breeding for many years with occasional new blood introduction and they are as good as it gets for high fence hunting.
I know one property where a client wounded a buffalo and they couldn't find it after tracking for two days.
Ended up renting a helicopter to find and dispatch the animal.

This is what you’re looking for. Proper tracking hunt with a great outfit @BAYLY SIPPEL SAFARIS
I saw this before and I know at least one member would be hunting there but couldn't find any reports about this hunt.

I witnessed a similar situation in Limpopo RSA.

One of the hunters wounded a bull buffalo while I was taking pictures of the shot. He used the old Hornady 450/400NE DGX non-bonded.
Hunted hard for 3 full days afterwards to find that buffalo and managed to get it when they were about to call a helicopter in for help. He used Hornady 450/400NE DGS to finish it.

The PH asked me every morning at the breakfast to show him the photos with the buffalo before the shot to refresh his memory.

I’m glad they found him in the end. It was a very stressful time for the hunter.

Hi, we have an offer for 2024, let me know if you are interested !

Best regards,

Romain

I would love to hunt Buffalo but the typical price is out of my price range. Is it possible to hunt “non-trophy” or those with a busted set of horns etc at a lesser price. I’m more after the adventure than the trophy itself I’d that makes sense.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and offers as well.
I think you could get those in South African game farms. ;)

Highly recommend free range area if hunting buffalo. And definitely be mentally prepared to receive a large final bill after the hunt for dip, pack, ship, additional trophy fees, game scout, etc. etc.

I've hunted this hunt and found it to be a very good hunt and I'm working on the report. Another member and his son also hunted it and have completed their report. They took 2 bulls. Unfortunately I shot and lost mine. The group made a helluva effort at tracking and recovery. In the end, the fault is entirely mine.

I have no hesitation in recommending this outfit.

@Tally-Ho HUNTING SAFARIS has a late season offer, incredible deal from a top notch outfit. Exceptional quality buffalo at that price on a 7 day hunt is a deal not to pass by.

Come on now @tanks…ear tags? He’s messing with us
It’s not as uncommon as everyone wants to think. They have cleaned up YouTube and photos significantly from before but it’s still out there. Someone posted this video to AH not recognizing the herd had ear tags. I really hope it wasn’t a $10k hunt.

Is hunting a cow the same experience as a bull? Do you get the same adventure?
I’d argue No, but everyone is different. I also don’t think cull hunting is same experience as trophy hunting. When you don’t need to be as selective I don’t think you get the same experience. Nothing about a cow buffalo compares to a mature bull for me.

If you are picking through a herd you could likely shoot 20+ cows for every hard bossed bull you will have an opportunity on. You are certainly in the same spot, hunting the same herd, but the experience would be somewhat different.

i opted for cow hunt and was pleased with it in 2015, the money i saved i used for other animals 9.3x62 MS used on this cow.
A venerable rifle to use on an African hunt

On a cow hunt you’re going to be tracking a herd. You have more eyes and noses to contend with and having to select a past prime cow out of the herd makes it difficult. Not the same experience as a bull hunt though where you are tracking lone or small groups of dugga boys.

i used a cz 550 in .375 H&H for most every think else, but i did,t feel under gunned with the 9.3x62. true the feeling of maybe being charged by a bull wasn,t there, but i don,t think shooting a cow would be any less dangerless if things went south. the cow cleaned and havled. i realy enjoyed my six hunting trips to africa, they were a life long dream fullfilled. i harvested 13-14 species of african game, none were lost or wasted.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe

Hi Walden. Good morning from England, Chris here (The Englishman!) from Croatia. Firstly it was a pleasure to meet you and Michelle - a fellow Sanderson! I have finally joined AH as I enjoy it very much. Glad you enjoyed the hunt and your write up which I read on AR was very good indeed. I am sending on WhatsApp pics from Bojan of some of the animals hunted recently. Take care and best regards. CS.
