Scrub Bull

@Dr Ray
Is she a bailer or a lugger. I bet the sign on the gate says beware of dog incase you stand on it.
All going well heading upto the Cape next year to hunt a few scrubbers. I think the Whelen with 275gn Woodleigh should do the job. My mate Greg is going to use his 444 Marlin single shot, my son want to use his 308 with either Outer edges or Atomic 29s.

Hopefully @CBH Chris can make it as well with his 375H&H. I just hope he leaves his Broken Heel gear like his pink tutu and ballet slippers at home. Thankfully the cape is no place for a 243. It's a place where men are men and guns start at 30 cal and just go up. A place where 243 owners quiver in fear of being discovered.
We have to go thru Cairns to get to the hunting property so we may be able to catch up with you for a beer or 2 either on the way up , way back or both.

You lie. I find that hard to believe. A fin upstanding man like yourself never.
If you say it is, it must be.
As for me being a closet 243 lover that will never happen. You can put me in a tiny closet, water torture me and sleep deprive and I woul still not like the 243.
It AIN'T A 25 DR RAY.

243s have their place. I no longer need one
22/250 and 270 cover the gap and I also have a 308.
I used a 243 for pig hunting when I was younger. Slicked it up for competition target shooting too.
Tomorrow I’m target shooting (indoors) 22 semi auto handgun

So what is the advantage of a 100 gr .25 bullet over a 100 gr .243 bullet of similar construction at the same velocity? It would seem the .25 would have the advantage in frontal area and the .243 in sectional density. I doubt any game animal could tell the difference.

@WAB
If they were at the same velocity not much BUT as the 243 struggles to make 2,800 fps and the 25/06 will comfortably and safely do 3,400 fps there is a bucket load of difference.

Chris even the little 250 Savage can equal the 243, the 257 Roberts will out do it, the 25/06 is even more of a good thing and the 257 Weatherby is better again.
No one makes a 100gn mono to the best of my knowledge but Barnes makes the wicked little 100gn TTSX. It's a bit hard to compare 100 grainers as thre are so many for the 25 but the 243 tops out at 105

Myself, I got a nice group with 124gn Hammer Hunter in my .308.
I haven't been so lucky with 124gn HH in my .300wm but some of their regulars are pushing 124's from their .300RUM rifles and smashing game.

@CBH Australia
All well and good Chris BUT how many 243s come with a one in 6 twist that are not custom made.
The standard 25cal twist is 1 in 10 and will stabilise the 100gn ttsx without issues

Obviously these scrub cattle escaped a cattle farm or were actually born in the wild.
One of the most ferocious wild cattle I ever cane across was a jersey cow. She was rounded up and put into a yard. She would charge at anything!
Threw a hat in the yRd and she attacked it.
Wild!!!
Jersey cattle are nothing to sneeze at. Usually gentle, but they can be very aggressive and hostile. I'm told that many milk cattle can behave aggressively if not habituated.
My uncle once bought a bunch of hereford crosses that had spent the summer in the forestry where they had little human contact and every large predator was trying to eat them. They would charge the dog and we spent a lot of time up on the corral fence while we tried to run them through the squeeze to brand and innoculate them. They were very aggressive.

The .243 pretty comfortably achieves 3,000 fps with a 100 gr bullet. That doesn’t put it in .25-06 class but it certainly will run with a .257 Roberts.

I used mostly 90 grain Speer bullets and used a max load of AR2209/one 4350
Occasionally I used 100 or 105 grain bullets - I think Sako
Didn’t care much for 80 grain bullets but did use 75 grain HP bullets way back

I am kinda on Bob’s side on this, I feel like the .243 needs all the help it can get so I stick to 100 gr bullets. I rarely use mine as my 7x57 is my go to rifle.

I've never been able to load the 243 with 100 grainers anywhere near 3,000fps. The best I could ever get was a bit over 2,800 fps actual chronoed velocity with a max charge of H4831SC. That was in a BSA with a 22 inch barrel and a tikka,t3 lite.
The Roberts will comfortably do 3,200fps with 100s, still well above the 243s pay grade.

Interesting, I’m getting a little over 3000 according to my chronograph. I’ll have to check the load.

Not sure if I would take Bob's side. It's funnier from my side, he is envious of that Weatherby Girls Hunt 2 (GH2) in .243 my wife has.

And if the 7x57 and 7mm-08 are Ballistic twins then yeah of course it's a great round but like comparing apples and oranges.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
