Hi
I have a Winchester Safari express in a 416 rem. As much as I do not want to admit, my eyes are not as good as when I was younger, I am 55.
So I would like to get a scope for this rifle, and would like to know what everyone uses or suggests.
The people on here have real experience which is valuable vs a company’s brochure.
Hopefully we can travel again soon and my dream hunt to Africa will materialize!

On my 416 Rem, I have VX6HD 1-6. Plenty of eye box is my main concern on a rifle with that amount of recoil, that scope gives you nearly 4". Swaro would also be a good choice.

The best quality scope that you can afford with a power range beginning with 1 or 1.5.

Yep!

My 416 wears a leupold 1x5...

Its a dedicated DG gun.. so more magnification isnt needed or even useful for me.. but I did want something that would give me a wide FOV at close range, with the advantage of a thick "pig plex" reticle for aging eyes (Very similar to a german #4 reticle), and a longer eye relief for the heavier recoil associated with the 416...

I recently upgraded the scope on my 375. I had a Leupold VX3, 1.5-5 x24 and was quite happy with it. I stumbled across a really good deal for an almost new Leica 1-6.3 Magnus and was amazed at the clarity of this scope and really like the illuminated dot. I can see bullet holes in the target at 200 yards with this scope.

I’ve had the Leica Magnus 1-6 on my 375 for a few years now. I’m quite happy with it. I bought it second hand and must have fired at least a 1000 rounds with it by now with no issues. My 9.3x74R double wears the now discontinued Leica Visus 1-4. Also a decent scope and you might be able to get a good deal on it if you can find one in stock anywhere.

Leica apparently came out with a new model in 2020, the AMPLUS.

A new 1-6x24, illuminated, 30mm tube for $1200 would appear to be a good price for a very good scope.

I guess it really depends on your pocketbook. Vortex and Leupold make acceptable entry level scopes. I took a new Vortex Viper Viper 6-24×50 to Africa with me for my .308 and it worked real well. My son's Leupold also worked well there on his .30-06. Leica and Swarovski make really nice scopes that are even better than the others in the early morning or late afternoon, when the amount of daylight is low, but they are pricey. If $1000 or less is what you feel comfortable with spending, go with one of the Vortex or Leupold products (model depending on your rifle and what you plan of shooting with respect to animal size and distance- speak with your PH about that before you go). If you have no problem dropping $2,500 to $3,500, I suggest you go with a Leica or Swarovski scope. In my limited experience, they are both superior to the former two under the low light conditions. All make great scopes though, so don't feel bad if you can only afford the cheaper ones, they are still better to most of what is on the American market.

If it is between a Leica or having extra $$$ to pay your PHs, hauling crew, or skinners a good tip, go with the Vortex or Leupold and treat those guys right. They are worth their weight in gold out in the field. I offered to help carry a skinned kudu off a mountain and earned a new appreciation for those guys ;).

I have four scopes that I’ve used on a rifle in this class, I would recommend all of them:

1) Leupold VX6 1-6x illuminated. Excellent scope with good range of adjustment.
2) Swarovski Z6 1-6x ee illuminated, outstanding scope with great eye relief. Range of adjustment is much more restricted than the Leupold so fiddling with mounts may be necessary. Scope is discontinued and may be hard to find. If you can find one buy it!
3) Swarovski Z8 1-8x. The most expensive scope I own. Low light performance is beyond belief. Eye relief is not as good as the Z6 and it has the same limitations on range of adjustment.
4) Leupold VX3 2.5-8x: easily one of the best scopes for the money on the market. Great eye relief and range of adjustment. Very good clarity but non illuminated. Lightest scope of the four by far. I have literally killed truckloads of game with this scope, including buffalo.

I hope this helps.

LOL - Most of us use a rifle but to each his own :)

The Leupold VX6HD 1-6X (illuminated) is what I choose after a lot of investigation. Mine has the no. 4 reticle with illumnated dot. Pretty lightweight, but rugged with good optics. This scope has a 30mm barrel.

I have a 1-4x AccuPoint that I have used very hard, it is still spot on and tight as a drum.
Have owned seven, six now and never had to return one for repair.
