Scope for .375

Thanks everyone had my head swiming trying to figure out what scope to use so I ordered 2 sets of warne QD ring and That way I can zero it for longer range shooting and DG shooting with 2 different scopes. Just as a note though Deb figured it out this weekend well kinda sorta.

Deb: there was a UPS truck blocking the driveway today, when we got to the house there was a package on the porch from MidwayUSA. did you order something?

Me: Yes some bullets and a Lyman pilot for a 375 for my case trimmer.
Deb: are they Bullets or Ammo?

Me: Ammo can't find them around here not to many people use them for hunting bunnies.

Deb: I didn't think you owed a 375.

Me: It belongs to bluey, he wants me to work him up some loads. :nailbiter:

Deb: :reyes: Yeah right! How much?

Me: half price at auction, never been fired. :bulb: Sence the ammo came in you can be the first to try it. :praying:

Deb: Nope you can get your own black eye.

:draught: Jeff Foxworthy: you might be a redneck IF you forget to tell your wife about your new 375 H&H, but the UPS man let's her know.... DEB's a great gal, get your own black eye.... You should not have a problem with it buddy, bluey on the other hand,,, sounds like he's in trouble for your new purchase.

Hey thats what Buddy's are for!

That sounds like my wife and I. Glad to see I'm not alone. We had almost the same conversation over my 577 double.

Just about a perfect combo for virtually anything less than DG. I think you'll like those binoculars. I have a pair that's been to Africa twice and I use when elk hunting. Nice and light, bright glass.
The Binos are Great I had an older pair of Bushnell but the Nikons are far superior,,,the 4x12 was mounted but I couldnt get it to Laser Align not matter what I did,,,I have Burris Mounts with adjustable Cants that can Adjust 20 MOA I even shimmed the mount and still cant get the scope to align,,the Rifle is a 1941 Austrian Sporter that allready had a Base on It ,I removed a Vortex 4x12 from My Swede and it was the same deal so it,s not the scope,I just ordered a set of rings that are Medium in height and I plan to install the Shorter Mount on the rear and that should give me what I Need,,I also Picked up a Nikon 3x9 on sale from Fleet Farm and put that on my Savage 110 in 308,,I,ll be at the range on Sunday running some 180s down the pipe

Stocky you already have me setting here waiting on a Zim report. be sure to let us know how it goes.

I just want to run a couple things by you all while on the subject...

When I got my first .375, I topped it with the Leupold 1.5 X5 illuminated. This was the first generation illuminated, it's been back to the factory twice with issues relating to the loosening of the dial on the objective piece. Since that dial is prone to "turn itself on", the battery is generally dead when I take it out of the safe, so I determined recently if I want to go illuminated scope, I would have to get the type that turn themselves off after a period of time. I think this is a good consideration in any illuminated scope.

Additionally, if you look at the actual power specs it's 1.5 to 4.5x, not 5.0.

When I finally acquired the wherewithal to go to Africa, I decided to build a new 375. Since this was a plains game Safari, I opted for a new 4.5 - 14 X 40 Leupold. I have to say I was really glad that I had more than 4 or 5 power for the longer shots, but I don't think I ever cranked it up past 10.

Low power scopes for 300 yard shots on those SA farms could be unnecessarily handicapping ones self as you may see in a moment.

So on 13 Sept I'm heading to Zimbabwe for Buffalo, however once the buffalo part is over it's off to hunt more plains game, particularly a big Livingston Eland and (say a prayer with me now) that mythical 60" kudu. After 12 days in Zimbabwe, we're flying back to SA for some more game with my nephew, plus hunting the farm where I got my 53 inch kudu last time for a monster and another very open farm that has some great Springbok, Black Wildebeest and both white and common blesbok. One can shoot as far as one can shoot on this place, so a higher power scope is a decided advantage and could be a lot more fun.

The point of all this is scoping my .375 correctly. I have a 1.75 6 Leupold on another rifle in the safe I could mount, But after looking at the real magnification specs I discovered it's actually 1.9 X on the low end and only 5.5 x at the upper. (Cheaters. When choosing a scope it pays to pay attention to REAL specs, not the ones in the ads.)

Enter the new 2-12x43 VX6 illuminated.

I don't think anyone would argue that the 1.75 - 6 VX3 is not a good dangerous game optic. The new VX6 actually has essentially the same low magnification (2.0 vs 1.9), more field of view (57 feet versus 51), 12 power at the top end for the long shots, It has the Leupold CDS (preprogrammed elevation dial) which I just ordered for 300 grain TSX factory loads that I chronographed at 2650 out of my 70. The illumination module shuts off after a few minutes at rest and comes on immediately when moved.

It's 30mm tube takes a very little bit of getting used to for us old 1" tube guys, but I seem to have adjusted well to the slightly higher cheek weld. The only drawback I see is that it weighs 5 ounces more than the 1.75x6, comes in at 16.0 vs 10.9 (actual) but who cares on a .375?

Seems to me the H&H is now set up pretty well for just about anything I am likely to encounter on the large end, and am bringing a 280 Ackley Improved (160 Accubonds @ 2950fps) for the smaller stuff.

Where am I going wrong here?

I agree ! Please tell us ... what is it on the ground.

So I'm no expert, but here is what I did at the recommendation of Tim Fallon (SAAM Shooting School). As mentioned by Bob, I too wanted and all around set up that I could use for dang near anything. I'd originally topped my CZ 550 with a leupold 1.25 x 4 VXR. Great for buff, but not long shots....

So I just received my Zeiss HD5 2x10 with the RZ 600 reticle yesterday. I'm going to mount it with Warne QD rings, just like I had with the Leupold. I will need different rings, obviously. I'm also going to replace the open sights with something, but don't know what yet. I just want better than what is on there now. Then, if I ever get in a pinch and need open sights I will be all set.

I like tha set up as I will be able to get up close and personal, or use a 235 grain bullet and have a gun that will reliably shoot further than I will ever try!

Now, to explain to my wife why I need a .458 Lott. :)

The range trip was a complete success,,sight in at 100yds with some Winchester 147GR then dialed in Tight with the 180s,,,wound up bouncing shots of an Armour plate at 550yds using the BDC reticle

Why do you want to change your open sight ? It can be useful everywhere .. Ghost ring ? Aimpoint or red dot ?

I still want iron sights, just something that my eyes can pick up more quickly than the stock version. Completely agree they are useful.

:) Well guys home from Kentucky got the weekend off, been playng with the 375 and I like it, mounted the Warne QD rings and topped it with my old reliable Redfield in a 1 3/4 -5X 375 H&H.jpg Took it out and tried a few rounds in it not bad at all, even Deb tried it after she seen if it was going to kick the crap out of me or not. I think the one other thing I will do at a later date is have a gunsmith mount iron sights on it for me this model didn't come with sights and I would hate to be on the hunt and my scope go down and me with no iron sights. I do have a second set of Warne QD rings that I will mount a second scope on for longer range shooting as well as better light gathering.375 H&H wQD.jpg so it back out to the target shooting so I can empty some brass and start working up some loads that this rifle likes.:thumb:

I have seen with (on ?) your pics you use PRVI's ammos. What do you think about these ammos which are cheap ?
I use these ammos on the range. Maybe I am wrong but I don't trust the bullet for hunting ... Your opinion please :hmmmer:

Love the room too!!!!

I'm with you 100% I only use them for the range, they have good brass for reloading and boxes to put the reloaded ammo back in for going on safari as to many questions if not in a factory box.:thumb:

I started out with the Leupold 1.5-5x on my 375 Weatherby, liked it a lot moved it over to my 500 Jeffery where it's handled 400 plus full power rounds. I have a Leupold 2-7x FireDot on our 7 1/2 lb 375 Weatherby now, it's real nice but I like the 1.5 - 5x better. At 5x you should be good to at least 400 yards with a 375 H&H if the rifle, ammo and shooter do their part. 1.5x it works fine at 8 feet. I use Talley QRs on both and haven't had any issues with them getting loose or being spot on for point of impact after taking them off and putting them back on.
