In 2022, I had a great experience with Leopard's Valley Safaris in SA. My PH used his phone with a Phone Skope attachment to record my shots (through his spotting scope). I didn't think much about it at the time, but I've found myself watching those videos again and again. So, I bought a spotting scope and Phone Skope, and I've been dragging it on hunts (Canada, Sweden, Greenland). However, I've never been able to use it successfully (in medium-to-fast paced hunting, someone besides the shooter needs to run it).

I'm trying to find a solution to this problem. I want to record my shots/hunts. This led me to attachments that connect directly to your scope, but with any recoil, I'm missing my actual shot/impact. Of course, I could hire a videographer to follow me around, but I'm guessing the cost could be significant...and for some of these remote hunts, it's simply not an option.

So my question is, does anyone have a solution to this problem? Does anyone else record their hunts/shots?

I would think Triggercam or Tacticam FTS could be a solution for you.

Edit: and a GoPro for body cam type footage.

When I was in Croatia, my guide had a Hikmicro scope that had built in video. Quite impressive, but looks like bother available in the USA.

My concern is bigger bore rifles...I don't think I can keep a 375 steady enough to spot the shot/hit. Does that make sense? Thanks.

Understood, I don’t have an answer for you on recoil other than an off body camera setup. Maybe a go pro on shooting sticks is your answer.

There’s a reason that YouTube has far more shaky, half framed, out of focus videos than clearly visible examples of hunting scenarios. It’s difficult. In order to get good quality recordings (I still want to say “footage”), it’s a balancing act of the number of cameras (which is weight, more batteries, remotes, chargers, etc.), and time. For all the good clear shots you see, most have no idea of the cut outs that are out of focus, pointing the wrong direction, etc. When you pull it off it’s awesome and rewarding, but there is a learning curve. If you can do it solo, it’s even better!

So don’t be discouraged. It takes time and practice. If you can not only cleanly take your game, but also clearly record its taking, you’ve done something worthwhile.

Haven't used this, but it looks interesting

They are BIG scopes, but not very expensive. Look at the ATN night-vision scopes. They have a daytime mode that is simply a color screen. Upon firing your gun, it created a video clip from 30 seconds before the shot to 30 seconds after the shot. You can derive stills from that as well. They're like $500. Get the smallest one they make, they are BIG scopes.

I have a triggercam @375 Ruger Fan mentioned previously.
I like it a lot, and it is a high quality unit.
It is NOT a good idea on a hard kicking rifle unless you have a lot of eye relief however, because it reduces your eye relief about an inch.

On something with heavy recoil I'd go with a ShotKam. Just test for POI change after mounting. For most big bore rifles it shouldn't be much of an issue though. Since it isn't looking thru the scope, the ShotKam needs to be "zeroed" by putting your rifle on a rest and adjusting it with your phone app after you mount it.

Here is what the ShotKam footage looks like. It's mostly made for shotgun stuff but it does have different modes that are optimized for rifle/ground game etc. The default is 1/3 speed slow motion but there are a lot of different settings of course. These are from the older Gen3 I have, but there is a newer version out I just got that is higher resolution. My youtube uploads don't look great, but the actual video quality is very high. When bird shooting for example you can slow down the footage, zoom in, and see the cloud of shot pellets spreading out toward the target.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
