We’re in that last three week push before our next S. Africa hunt and we’re worthless at focusing on anything other than the trip. John Hill and I are taking Justin Holt with us to document the hunt as our photographer. Justin is professional photographer for some of the big names in the US firearms industry so I’m really looking forward to seeing his work. We have 3 rifle companies we’re featuring in this project for the magazine:
CZ550 Safari Magnum .458 Lott- currently at American Hunting Rifles getting cut down and slicked up. We’ll be using the two rifles they sent us on our cape buffalo hunt.
Henry 45-70 Case Colored- Henry sent us a few rifles to brush hunt with. I’m sure we’ll use them for wildebeest, warthogs and impala...maybe a few others. I’m using iron sights with mine and I’m really looking forward to hunting with it. Lever guns with irons are just fun to hunt with.
McWhorter Custom Rifles- We’re hunting in an area I’ve hunted before and the Kudu can really push you into shooting long range. They just disappear into the mountains. I shot my last in this spot at 629yds and the McWhorter is even more accurate than my Jarrett I used on the last hunt. For the record, I understand shooting at such a distance may not appeal to the safari purists but long range shooting is a passion of mine and I practice...a lot.
I’ll make sure to post updates and photos from the field. For now, here’s a photo of the Cape Eland I took on this property during our last hunt there.
