Hello all,

I am looking for a alternative iron sights for a Ruger Safari Magnum chambered for 458 Lott. The rifle is shooting 4 inches low at 50 yards with factory loaded 500 grain Barnes TSX. My local smith recommended a NECG white bead sight that measures .300 in height, the shortest avaliable. Before I commit to that, I would like to know if anyone has another recommendation. Either front sight, adjustable rear sight or a custom smith with experience. I'm open to options.

Yes, the very first thing I did with my RSM is replace the Ruger front sight with NEGC Masterpiece Banded Ramp and a white line Sourdough sight blade.

I should have mentioned that the previous owner had the rifle Mag-Na-Ported, which makes changing the entire front sight a little more involved. I'd like to avoid that if possible.

NEGC has a non-banded ramp also.

Post an image of what's there now.

You don't have to change the entire front sight just the insert.

It is something a decent gunsmith can change in under 15 minutes.

It is something you can do yourself if you are comfortable with minor fitment. I have changed front sights on rugers a number of times the get the irons regulated to the loads i was using.
That was the original plan. That exact part actually. I was looking for other options in case that doesn't work. I've also been toying with the idea of their Sourdough sight as well.

Replacing the front bead should be a very simple process and shouldn't require a whole new barrel band assembly. Most front sight blades are a press-fit dovetail, or use a set screw to keep them in place. Either way... simple.

edit.. @AZDAVE was faster on the keyboard than me.

I suppose I should more clearly define my plans and concerns. I'm likely going to try the NECG white bead sight at the shortest height of .300 as recommended by my local smith. I wanted to get some ideas together in case that new part doesn't work or if there are any better options before placing the order with NECG. I apologize for the initial confusion and thank you all for the input thus far.

If you put the lowest front sight on it and it isn't enough, you then take a small round needle file to the rear sight till you dial in the group.

I have no idea if the Ruger ramp accepts a NEGC sight blade if it does great, I used the white line Sourdough style because they are adjustable with a file instead of a fixed hight; plus I just like the looks.

Fwiw, I had the same exact issue with two RSMs. Replaced the front blades with the shorter NECG beads and never looked back. The NECG front sight inserts came with clear, easy instructions for final fitting, and required no special equipment or knowledge.

They are much more visible to my rapidly aging eyes, and replacement took me no time at all. Note, one of the factory blades was stuck due to very mild corrosion, so I soaked it in penetrating oil and lightly tapped it with a non-marring punch. It came right out.

I was very happy with the end result.

@CP392
For a 18” sight radius, at 50yds, 20/1000” reduction in front sight height raises the impact 2”.
I just replace my Ruger Hawkeye front sight and rear sight so that both would work with the Ruger peep.
Removing the sight took some banging as it was in tight. Replacing follow suggestion at NECG.
I can check my notes but think the dovetail depth is 79/1000”.

@Racer00 You are correct, I know better than answering question before my second cup of coffee:Banghead:
